It seems like Sherwood Gibson’s mind never stops. So naturally, we’re always eager to see what he and Ventana have cookin’. Makers of some of the smoothest, most beautiful, well-made bikes in the industry, Ventana wowed us with the introduction of the El Capitan 29er full springer in the summer of 2005, only to follow it up with two solid 29er hardtail entries in the fall, El Padrino and El Comandante.
We’ve just come to find out that the Ventana Women’s Mountain Bike Team will debut a new lightweight XC frame (with a familiar name) at Sea Otter: El Fuego. Reportedly, the 3 1/2′ travel El Fuego will come in just shy of five pounds, largely made possible by a ball-burnished finish and a Fox RP3 shock. Sealed cartridge bearings will be standard, and there won’t be a quad bearing option. We can only speculate that this will perhaps be Ventana’s finest showpiece, as the machine work should be incredible, shaving each of those precious grams. El Fuegos are expected to be available after Sea Otter. A 29er version is expected to follow sometime this year.
