Heal lift is real (ly bad)

I had hunted for a long time to find a MTB shoe to fit my EEE width forefoot and skinny heal/ankle and read a ton of great things about this shoe. When I first put them in my living room on I was so excited as they fit perfectly then I stood up and my heal almost came out of the back. I tried everything to fix it (different socks, tightening down the BOA) and nothing worked so I had to return them and keep searching.

I love EVERTHING about this shoe, BUT although I wanted more forefoot room for my toe-warmers in winter riding... my foot, probably average for a size 41 shoe female, is still lower volume than most males. So...not only was my foot was moving around a bit, but the dreaded heel slip was also unacceptable, especially for a person used to older model SIDIs which fit like the proverbial glove. I would have purchased SIDIs again, but HATE their new Tech-NO closure system (Hello...I live in the northweat and those are NOT manageable when wearing long-fingered gloves)! LAKES: PLEASE MAKE SOME WOMEN'S MODELS!!

First attempt: had to return these. the size information on the product page for competitive cyclist says size 44 equates to a 10. When the Lake shoes came they said size 44 and 11 on the box. They were too big of course. Edit - received the right size; 43. Fit is good, until you want to walk or pedal. The heel slip on these shoes is something I've never felt in a shoe; cycling or not. Should have listened to reviews on this page. The heel slip is real and too much.

Unfortunately, these shoes are a fail for me. On the positive side, the construction seems high-quality, which was one of the reasons I bought the shoe. And the toe box is indeed appropriately sized for me. This was the main reason I bought the shoe. So many other manufactures make the toe box too small. However, the shoe simply will not hold my heel in place when riding. I measured my foot according the the Lake website guide, and it suggested a size 47 for me. I ordered and returned the 47 as it was too big. I normally wear a 12 to 12.5 in sneakers. The 46.5 feels good just standing in them. However, there is a severe lack of heel retention when riding. If I tighten the top boa REALLY tight it will stop, but then the the wire from the boa digs into the top of my foot and my circulation is cut off. I read a review on a MTB website that mentioned that slippage could be an issue, but also said it would go away by putting the shoes in the oven (Lake recommendation) and molding them to the back of the foot. I tried this, and it made zero difference. My old $150 specialized shoes with velco straps feel so much better than these. Will probably try to recoup some of my cost on these $300+ shoes by fire selling them, if I can. Very disappointed.

I paid full price for these, and they’re worth it. Absolutely awesome. I’m coming from Giro Empire shoes, and also tried on Giro Sectors and Specialized Recons. These fit far better. I like the gripper stuff in the heel, the super comfortable upper material, the reflective bit on the heel, the wide toe box, and the rubber on the insole. If you miss a clip-in, these got you. Carbon is obviously high quality. And the BOAs: holy sh*t. I’m never going back. These do the micro adjustments both ways which I love. And at the end of a ride, it takes half a second to pop these off. No more fighting wet laces. Be aware that cheaper shoes don’t have the same BOA dials. Overall, these are the single best MTB purchase I’ve made apart from my bike. Sizing is dead on. I wear a 10 in running shoes, 9 in boots, and a 43.5 here fit perfectly.

Wanted a stiff trail shoe that offered some protection without being bulky. MX238 checked the boxes. Tried measuring my foot according to Lake’s guide and it resulted in a half size too small. Ended up with a 45.5, which is what I normally wear. The shoe might be biased wide, but with the dual boa system, I get a snug fit without any squeezing. Appreciate the nice boa dials with quick release. I tried a different shoe that didn’t have the QR and sent it back. The size 45 weighted in at 435g without cleats (45.5 was 440g). Very stiff, not great for hike-a-bike, but that was expected. I’ve got different shoes for those days. Summary... comfortable, quality construction, and the black/camo looks awesome.

I’ve been using these shoes on both road and MTB and they’ve been fine for both. I know, it’s sacrilege to use a non specific road shoe on the road, but my Lake 332 were getting a bit old in the tooth and my prior MTB shoes were pretty beat up. So, why not try 1 shoe for both? I’m not racing and after 30 years of riding on and off road I figured I deserve all day comfort with a single shoe. This fits the bill. Comfortable, stiff, boa system for great fit, I’m liking these shoes. An unanticipated benefit is when stopping at a light, these shoes aren’t slippery and I can walk around in them when off the bike. Plus, the dark camo is a very cool look.
