The Lake MX237 Shoes may be built to maximize efficiency, but a host of thoughtful features make them far more comfortable than their race-bred heritage might lead you to believe. Sure, Lake’s extensive experience helps it to channel every last watt to your pedals, but the dual Boa closure gives you tons of fine tuning, and the full grain leather upper breaks in like your favorite leather slippers. Granted, you probably won’t want to wear them around the house, but when you’re dropping the hammer, they’re a much better option.
The key to the MX237s' power transfer lies in Lake’s Competition last. Like the moldable CFC last used in the MX331, the Competition last is designed to focus your power output into the ball of your foot, and straight through to the pedal. And while efficiency is key, there’s added room in the toe box to allow for foot expansion under hard efforts. And it all rests on Lake’s stiff Race carbon fiber sole. The result is a comfortable fit, packaged in a highly efficient shoe.
The dual Boa closure has been quickly adopted by the professional ranks due to the fact that it offers easy fine-tuning, and it stays tight throughout your entire ride. And since you’re able to independently adjust tension on the forefoot and the heel, you can lock down your heel, without having to over-tighten the rest of the shoe. And as you probably know, that means better bloodflow and greater comfort. The Boa closure runs underneath the full grain leather upper, enhanced with mesh panels to maximize foot-cooling airflow.
The Lake MX237 Shoes - Men's are available in whole and half sizes, from 39 to 47, plus whole sizes 48 and 50, and in the colors Black/black and Orange/black. All sizes from 40 up are available in Wide in the color Black/black.
- Full grain leather uppers mold to your foot over time
- Race Carbon sole
- Competition last
- Dual-boa closure
- Two-hole cleat compatibility

Over the years I have tried on dozens of Road and Mountain bike shoes. I have a medium width foot, but like a roomy toe box, I never consider wide sizes due to loose heel fit. Most all the shoes I tried, had very stiff and very uncomfortable materials, many were designed wrong (for my foot) and rubbed below the ankle. My current Road bike shoe ended up being a used Lake CX301 with kangaroo leather. I was very pleased with them. I wanted to get the MX232 for off road in the kangaroo, but ended up getting the MX237 with a full grain leather. I could not justify the two and half times more cost for the kangaroo, but over the years found real leather is the ONLY material for me. IMHO no man-made materials equal kangaroo, goat or other real leathers. I gave up some in weight, but if you want a great shoe (i also got the red...awesome color) with Lake's Comfort Last (larger toebox and narrow heel) this may work.

One of the more comfortable biking shoes I’ve owned, even more comfortable then my s-works road shoes. Only downside is they are heavy. When these get worn I’ll look into Lake’s lighter weight models. They do run about a 1/2 size large.

If you need a little more volume in the toebox than most bike shoes provide the MX237 is hard to beat for an all around MTB shoe. Light and durable. Iâve had mine for 3 years and theyâve been put through the wringer. Lots of rocks strikes and hike a bike scuffs. They scuff easy but who cares, itâs leather and just cosmetic. After a few rides they break in and only get better with use. Pop in some Specialized Body Geometry footbeds and you will be comfy for those 12+hr endurance races. Iâm replacing mine because I want to size up to give my toes a little extra room since my feet swell after all day riding. I tried the MX237 Endurance since they offer some more protection but the shoe rises up higher around my ankle bone and rubs.

The MX237 is your do-it-all, hammer down, last for years caliber of off-road shoe. I have thoroughly thrashed my first pair and they keep holding on. They are stiff enough for allroad duty on my gravel bike, but maintain enough flex for the days when I need to walk my mountain bike. The rubber outsole has the grip to keep traction on rocks and roots - more so than a comparable Sidi, but not quite the same as a true Vibram outsole. Fit is a little large for the size, so prepare to go down a half-size from your normal shoes to achieve a performance fit. All-in-all the MX237 is a great option for folks hammering out miles on their trail/gravel bikes.

Great Shoe--Not a great fit for me
- Familiarity:

I wanted to love this shoe after reading all the reviews on it! Not being able to find a women's version in stock, I went with the smallest size in the men's offering. Sadly, it was toooo big for me in a 39. They are wicked comfortable and do run wider in the toe than the majority of shoes, making them a great option for folks who find Giro too snug.

My Go To
These work really well for trail riding/xc racing. I wouldn't recommend them for a ton of hike a bike, but they work fairly well as long as you aren't on rocks the whole day. Overall great for their intended use.

Would never buy these again. The leather uppers looked so beat up after only a hand full of rides. The black rubber tips started to chunk off as well. I've had 2 pairs of Bontrager RXL silver carbon sole shoes that I have raced and trained in for years that look way better than these Lakes look after just one month of use. If you look at their website, they have now re-designed the shoes so that the black rubber guards now wrap around the entire front of the shoes.

one of my favorites
I've had 4 pair of the lake shoes now, on and off road. I still have all of them. Great fit, a little wider in the toe box than your average shoe such as sidi or pearl izumi. This is great for some, meh for others. Quality is top notch. Highly recommended.

Either love or hate them

I love them, they are a bit heavy, however the materials that Lake uses are top notch, and haven't worn down since I got them. easily a shoe that I can abuse for 5 more year without a sign of needing to buy a new pair. Ergonomics of the last fit me perfect, and plenty of volume in the toes to wear winter socks. However i did need to size down on these shoes.

I tried these on, and had to cinch down the BOA dials until the sides of the shoe were close to touching, squishing the tongue of the shoe. I also ordered a pair of Sidi Drakos to compare with. I'm going with the Drakos because they are a better fit for my narrow feet. For road shoes, I've been using Sidis for many years. The weight of the MX237 and the Drakos are almost identical. The 46.5 MX237 was 394 grams, and the Drako in 47 was 393.

Hi Ross, The shoes do come with spikes and they are removable. The spikes aren't too long, but you can purchase alternates if you need more length. We don't sell spikes, but you can find them on the Lake Cycling website under accessories

After purchasing the Lake CX237 road shoe in Spring and loving the extra room the toe box, it was time to upgrade my mountain / commuter shoes. I considered a number of other brands, (Giro, Mavic, Specialized) I ordered the MX237. They feel just like the road shoes in the toe box and had soft rubber lugs that aid traction when walking. The bright orange was a bonus for commuting days, but I do admit there are some kit colors that clash. I use Specialized inserts in my Lake shoes as that cured a foot pain I had last year. The combination of stiff sole and the inserts has been perfect for long rides. There is enough room in the shoe to add the wedges I need. I have gotten them completely soaked on a commute home in the rain. They dried nicely and softened up in the next use. I have put a few hundred miles on these shoes and they are holding up well, albeit the leather does scuff in the heel area. The toe is nicely protected by the rubber part of sole. My prior shoes were Mavic and Sette that served me for many years but it will be hard to consider another brand than Lake looking forward.

Not a mountain shoe

No shoe with a Boa on the side should be considered a mountain shoe. If you scrape against a rock or hit a log and the little plastic things snap right off. Shoe cost $300 and lasted 4 months. Big disappointment.

Did you contact Lake and/or Boa? This happened on my MX331 'cross shoes and although I thought they were toast Boa was able to sew in a new buckle, free of charge.

I have had several different MTB shoes from multiple brands. This MX237 is by far the most comfortable cycling shoe I have ever put on. The leather is soft and doesn't need broken in to feel nice. Venting is great and I don't have issues with hot feet. The tread on the soles is the most gripping rubber of any MTB shoe I have worn. It is very secure on rocks and roots. All in all, this is a great shoe. They run a little larger than other cycling shoes with a roomy toe box. Check Lake's fit guide on their site for info.

Once you go double BOA, you will never go back to velcro straps or fiddly ratchet things that you cant do up fast or adjust on a ride/race. Only thing I would improve on the current Lakes is being able to loosen the BOA without popping the button up and losing almost all tension. Other shoes allow you to tension and loosen without releasing the BOA dial. The soles grip very well on steep climbs and over all kinds of rock, roots, gravel etc. Feels like you are standing on a aircraft carrier deck. No more worries about brusing arches standing on your pedal for dismount (which was horrible on another brand). Rock solid platform. Orange. Cool.

I bought these March 2015. I will admit I ride a lot, usually about 6 hrs/week, but less than 2 years later the heel cups of both shoes are shredded to the point that they're not usable anymore. This was my third pair of Lake shoes over my 20 years of mtn biking and the first pair that fell apart. I tried emailing and calling customer service at Lake and never even got a response. Despite the failure, they were comfortable from the first ride and I really have put them through hell it's just that my previous Lake shoes held up better. But all that aside, I am going to buy another pair as they were the best performing shoes I've ever had. I have really narrow feet. The regular width was ok for me although I tended to have to nearly max out the BOA adjusters especially once the shoes had "warmed up" after a good 1/2 hour of pedaling. But the ability to adjust the tension while on the bike is amazing. It only happened a couple of times but I did have the BOA come loose on me in the middle of some high speed chunky downhill sections which was not confidence inspiring. It may be because my feet are so narrow and I had the adjusters tightened as far as they'd go. On my next pair I might experiment with a thicker foot bed. I wear a 10 or 10.5 street shoe depending on brand and a 44.0 regular fit me perfectly in length.

Nicely made but i'll never know if they're any good. Seriously giant toe box. size down 1/2-1 full size. Look at sizing on Lake website, which I see now, is accurate, competitive cyclist is not. I am a size 9 US and need at least a 42 if not 41.5

Second Review
Had a pair that is still going, but are getting a bit worn so I purchased a new pair. Same great lake quality and love the boa. Can't go wrong with these. Fit a little larger and had to take up a little space with a thicker insole.

I've tried em all and for me these are the best quality, comfort, fit and look I've ever worn. I used to go for snug fit and wondered why at the end of a ride my toes were numb and hurting. I have a narrow foot and wear a size 11 USA and the 45 in the Lake feels a tiny bit roomy in the toe area when I start, but it's so nice after a few hours having room. The boa system doesn't allow the fit to be sloppy. I love the orange and am about to get some black for the days my kit has lots or red in it. Orange and red doesn't work for me. Great shoe!!

The boa system provides a great fit although I find myself re adjusting mid ride and occasionally one of the boa dials does pop up and lose tension. I've had other boa shoes that do not have this problem, no idea if it's my riding or inherent to the shoe. I use these as a daily ride shoe and my first experience with leather. That being said I find the leather does stretch and has become very comfortable, custom almost but as with leather it does scuff, large and small, kinda expected. Color is awesome, sole is awesome and stiff, tread on bottom is robust enough for hiking up small sections of trail. I had to size down considerably, I usually ride a 45.5 or 45, 10.5- 11 and ended up with a 44, a little tight but has stretched. I had sworks before and got 2 1/2 yrs before they were unrideable, I expect 2 out of these. Weight is not feather light but light enough, doesn't feel bulky on the foot. I have a narrow foot and bought the regular, fits fine.

I just purchased these. excellent quality and fit. I'm a 10.5, however, I felt the 44.5 a bit snug in length, so went with the 45. I had some heel lift minor with the 45, but considering the foot swell during long rides, I figured the 45 made more sense.

MikeSF - you know these shoes are supposed to be sider than the average cycling shoe, right? Lake designs them this way on purpose for folks who either have wide feet or want more room in the forefoot. Whereas Sidi's employ the more traditional narrow last. So it's a little unfair to say the shoe 'runs wide' especially if you have narrow feet.
