Why We Like The MX176 Cycling Shoe

Lake realizes that to go fast, you must be comfortable which is why it creates the MX176 Cycling Shoe. Utilizing its MX Sport Last, it features a larger, roomier toe-box than its MX Comfort last, giving you a bit more real estate for your dogs during those marathon events without sacrificing efficiency. Lake calls the resulting fit aggressive yet comfortable, making it ideal for bike messengers, touring cyclists, or anyone else who plans on being in their cycling shoes for long periods of time.

Lake uses its Race Sole to transfer the power to the pedals and covers it with its Mountain Race X non-marking rubber outsole for grip anytime you are off the bike. The Clarino microfiber upper is soft and durable while its mesh panels keep your feet from overheating on long rides. The closure system consists of a side mounted push/pull BOA L6 lacing system up top with a hook-and-loop strap closer to the toes. The BOA uses a micro-cable that provides fine-tuning and evenly-distributes the closure eliminating pressure points and hot spots.

Didn't work for me

I have been pretty happy with the MX 168 for the past year, with its generous toe box and overall comfortable fit, so I was excited to try the 176 since it uses the same last and cuts down on some weight. Unfortunately, the boa and fit was inadequate to keep my foot locked in place, so with my foot sliding fore/aft, my toes were getting jammed into the toe box eventually causing pain during a ride. I tried a few different insoles, tried thicker socks, and tried to tighten the Velcro strap and boa with my foot slammed into the heel cup, but I could not lock my foot in place without pain from the overtightened boa. Differences between the 168 and the 176: the 168 has two Velcro straps and a boa, whereas the 176 just has one lower Velcro strap and boa. With the extra middle Velcro strap on the 168, you can better hold the foot in place and keep it from sliding forward. The 168 is a slightly beefier shoe, with less airflow and a heavier boa dial, but otherwise they are very similar, using similar last and similar sole. Note there is an "enduro" version of the 168 - this refers to the regular version.
