MX145 Cycling Shoe
Nothing shuts down the fun on a snow-bike adventure faster than cold, wet feet. If you plan on putting a respectable number of miles atop your fat bike this winter, you'll need to invest in some dedicated footwear. It makes all the difference in the world. Lake has been making winter-specific cycling shoes for a few years now, so it already has the concept pretty well dialed in. That started with the MXZ303 winter biking boot, but honestly, it's overkill unless you're doing some very serious, very cold fat biking. For most of us, the MX145 mid-weight winter cycling shoe will do very nicely.
The MX145 starts with MX Sport Last featuring a larger and roomier toe-box than the Comfort last and provides increased foot control through the heel and forefoot. Its sole is relatively stiff for efficiency and features a Hypergrip Enduro outsole with Ice Lock anti-slip lug inserts. This combination has the stiffness to put power to the pedals and offers plenty of traction off the bike as well. The uppers are a highly water-resistant waxed canvas and leather, and Lake employs a waterproof membrane to seal out the elements.
The dual BOA IP1 closures have been quickly adopted by the professional ranks due to the fact that it offers easy fine-tuning, and it stays snug throughout your entire ride. And since you're able to independently adjust the tension on the forefoot and the heel, you can lock down your heel, without having to over-tighten the rest of the shoe. And as you probably know, this means better blood flow and greater comfort.
- A warm, rugged cycling shoe for winter adventures
- The upper utilizes highly water resistant materials
- Dual Side mounted Push/Pull BOA IP1 lets you easily dial in the fit
- Hypergrip Enduro Sole with Ice Lock anti-slip lug inserts improves grip off the bike

Really well made boot. However, like most every other cool/cold weather mountain biking shoe I've tried (and have tried many) the toe box is too small. A roomy toe box is the number one requirement to keep toes warm. Cycling shoe makers rarely address this. Maybe because a roomy toe box makes the shoe look bulky and a bit odd. (Face it, grown men with goofy helmets riding fancy bikes in the woods - we already look real silly. Might as well have warm toes.). Yeah, Lake makes a warmer shoe - I had it... the toe box was too tight. Sized up, and the shoe fit perfectly with a thick sock everywhere... except, you got it, the toe box. The only cool/cold weather shoe I've had that addressed the roomy toe box issue was an older style Specialized Defroster. Mine are still going strong. Its the lightest, toughest, simplest, cheapest cool/cold shoe I bought. Its a classic case of a great, simple, well thought out design, and very good construction. Ever wear a good hunting boot or real cold weather boot, like a pac boot - they all have one thing in common - a roomy toe box. Thanks Backcountry for letting me try on this shoe and return it. Maybe pass this on to Lake. Its obvious they are trying to make a good product. Their construction appears top notch. Maybe they'll listen. MJ

Just so so.... 2.5 stars
Just so so... 2.5 stars Brett Cochran on Apr 11, 2019 I have had these ab 4 months... Enough time to get a thorough test. The good things about this shoe is waterproofing and power transfer. You can also tighten it down pretty good and is still comfortable, that is unless you have to do a lot of hike-a-bike. These shoes give my heels blisters like no other I have encountered. I contacted Lake ab this issue after a MTB marathon race that involved quite a bit of waking. I thought is going to have to DNF due to blisters. The bolt were the spikes would go also fell out on this day. They did respond quickly but said I needed heel inserts and sent some Amazon links for some kinda pad that is supposed to go in women's high heels. They also did not offer to send a replacement bolt. I normally don't review but felt the need to on these. I'm scared to get in another MTB marathon race/gravel and have to walk a bunch either due to tech, trail crowding, or mechanical. Also they are mediocre in cold. I would say below 40 degree and you will still be cold on gravel. Might be ok under 40 degrees if riding singletrack. I bought these to keep my feet warm on long winter base gravel rides. They kinda dissapointed me in the warmth factor.

I had my doubts about these. So far they have prove to be great shoes for cold riding. I was out for about 6 hrs on a 32-34º weather. you will feel your feet cold but not going numb due to the temperature. My feet sweat that one of my problems...so I use spray to keep them dry while riding. it helps a lot. We crossed 2 water streams and I can attest that they are as waterproof as you let them be. some water got into my shoe but was because i loosen the top boa dial. if you are crossing streams or water make sure your top boa dial is tight. The only con is the toe overlap. They are a big big on the front. I use 41.5 on regular lakes. but for winter one 42 is the way to go. If you have questions, reach out to Todd Frein. He's the best!

Size up .5 = perfect w/ winter socks
Purchased to use for fall to winter cross. I usually wear 45.5, but chose 46 in order to rock thinker socks. Have a couple rides in at 40 degrees... toes fine until about 2 hours in, but I have circulation challenges. The double boa allows for perfect fit and easy adjustment while in motion. Also easy to take off after a long ride and hands spent. Happy thus far.
