CX403 Wide Cycling Shoe

Lake’s top-tier road shoe gets an update in the new CX403. Featuring the same custom fit carbon fiber sole and supple kangaroo leather upper as its predecessor, the CX403’s closure system is redesigned and the added rubber toe bumper helps extend the shoe’s longevity. Lake’s wide model adds 10mm to the last for an alternate fit option.

Lake has worked long and hard on building the ultra-efficient Custom Fit carbon fiber sole. You may have had carbon-soled shoes in the past that didn’t quite fit, and if that’s the case, you recognize that ultimate power transfer is meaningless if your feet are in agony. But you can say goodbye to the era of compromise, as these are heat-moldable, ensuring the perfect fit and incredible heel hold in this wide last model.

The redesigned dual BOA closures only enhance the fit. Compared to the CX402, the CX403’s instep strap is twice as wide to better disperse pressure from the upper BOA dial. By employing two dials, Lake enables you to keep your heel locked down, without requiring undue pressure on the forefoot. And as you already know, that means better blood flow, and greater comfort.

The BOA closures weave between the sleek kangaroo leather upper, which promises fantastic service life. Better yet, since kangaroo leather is among the thinnest, most durable types of leather around, they’re incredibly supple and only get better with time. The perforations work in conjunction with mesh panels to maximize airflow, so your feet stay cool, instead of getting clammy. Carbon fiber panels along the instep help keep the foot stabilized and increase the efficiency of power transfer as well as resist the shoe stretching out too much and changing shape.

Rock Solid, Amazing Quality and Comfort

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

It took three passes at the heat molding to get these shoes to being comfortable, and I may still make one more adjustment. Be patient, as everyone reports that they feel terrible right out of the box. They are also not ver comfortable off the bike, but once clipped in the connection to the pedals is fantastic. For me, the wide toe box is a game changer as my feet were getting pinched by all of my prior shoes. These shoes are not featherweights, but I think the terrific power transfer is worth a bit of extra weight. Quality of materials is absolutely first rate and the iridescent blue is very striking.

It took me four tries to get these molded to my liking but now they feel great, after feeling horrible right out of the box. The wide toe box is really welcome after years of wearing shoes that were too narrow. The feeling of connection to the pedals and power transfer is really amazing. All of the materials are top notch quality and they seem really well made. Not light by any means but I think the fit makes up for it. I will say they are pretty uncomfortable off the bike.

Profound disappointment

$550 I will not have back. I very carefully purchased these shoes according to Lake’s sizing chart. I was between 43 wide and 42.5 wide. A 43 wide felt too long, so I exchanged for a 42.5 wide. The shoes are so uncomfortable out of the box yet I hoped heat molding would get them to feel wearable. After multiple rounds (15-20) of heat molding exactly to spec, they have hardly budged and now there is superficial wear on the sole because of the heat molding process. I mounted my cleats and within 2 weeks I have lots of foot pan, and my right heel feels bruised. Here's the problem: there is no way to know how a cycling shoe will fit until you ride with it, but mounting cleats and heat molding made the shoes ineligible for return. And they were so stiff and uncomfortable from the start I had no choice but to try and heat mold them. Competitive Cyclist and Lake have both denied a possibility of return.

Love these shoes!

Just bought my second pair (Chameleon Green at a great price!!) because I truly love these shoes! Using the Lake sizing guide for my first pair I got a 44.5, but it was too small and exchanged for a 45 which fits my 110mm wide feet great. More than enough room in the toe box for me and comfortable all around after oven molding. Stiff soles, beautiful soft leather, BOAs, nice looking(subjective), not cheap, but you get what you pay for!

Too small

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it
Size Bought:

I wear a size 11 US and ordered a 45.5 although the sizing guide says I should order a 44.5. The 45.5 is too small as my toes touch the inside end of the toe box. I also have normal width feet and ordered the wide which fits fine. I will return and replace with a size 46.

You Deserve These Shoes

I know, it's a lot of money and you already have the top end SIDIs. But nothing is like putting on these shoes, warm out of the oven, and shaping them to your feet before a big ride. The kangaroo uppers handle crashes great - they don't scar easily. Plus, they get softer and softer over time. The BOAs work great for adjusting on the fly, and with a little saddle soap, they stay looking new, crash marks and all. I wear an 11 E dress shoe, and if you have a wide foot, these wides are perfect. When group riding with Type A bikers, I have gotten dropped twisting my BOAs because these LAKEs do get a little looser and require a tad more periodic tightening. That's the price of wearing a shoe that's made with succulent kangaroo glove leather, and where SIDIs may have the tiniest edge. That said, these LAKEs are very stiff and light, and just fine for sprints, climbs, and racing - just keep them snug. You deserve this shoe.
