Why We Like The CX238 Cycling Shoe

Lake evolves the CX237 to the new CX238 with updates to improve the longevity and performance of this long-time favorite road racing shoe. The Competition last is shaped for better fit and comfort during hard efforts, with a slimmer heel and wider forefoot to allow for foot expansion under pressure. Supporting it all is Lake’s Race carbon fiber sole, providing the stiffness we need for better power transfer and durability. A panel at the heel and a rubber bumper at the toe protect from prematurely wearing out the full-grain leather upper, which has mesh panels and venting to improve cooling.

Found my perfect road shoe after 15 year

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I finally found the perfect shoe. Size 49 Lake CX238 is my new 100 mile shoe. Stiff carbon soles, real leather uppers, totally adjustable boas. I've never been so comfortable. They weren't cheap but for comfort, I don't care. As a big foot, I've suffered with numbness and cramping toes (aka hotfoot) for years. Cycling shoes just aren't an easy fit in a size 14 (not wide). They're usually too tight In a regular width and too wide in "wide". Or the sole Is not stiff enough in models that come in a size 49/50. I've tried Bont moldable shoes (too high arch), Shimano's in various width, Specialized regular and wide width. Cramping usually starts around mile 25 into mile 40. 50 milers are always a struggle requiring some dancing on the pedals. I really can feel the Improvement In power transfer and it shows in my stats. Simply Incredible. Regarding size-most road shoes in this size run a little tight. This is as roomy as my trail runner shoes. So if you compensate for typical bike shoes being small, do t. Size up one

Great shoe for my problem feet

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Size Bought:
43.5
Height:
5' 10"
Weight:
150

Before ordering this shoe I went through the Lake measuring process and came up with a size that probably would have been to small. Lake recommended a size 43 but I've been wearing size 44 in all my shoes for ages. As it turns out the size 43.5 is perfect for my foot. As has been pointed out, these shoes don't really offer the slim, speedy look of a lot of shoes but the wider toebox is perfect and solved my numb foot problem. Another feature I like that was missing in my previous brands of shoes was a BOA system that is two way. I can reach down and open up or close down the system one click at a time as opposed to having to stop, release the BOA and then retighten.

Just great shoes

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Just got a pair of the black CX238 road shoes, size 43.5. That new leather smell as you open the box. This is now my fourth pair of 238 range shoes, between road and mountain shoes. Yes, I have a problem. But the Lake 238 shoes fit my feet perfectly, no hot spots, no pinching or crushing of the toes, they are just the perfect shoes for my foot shape. Run maybe just a bit small compared to other shoes, most other shoes I've had have been size 43. Or perhaps the Lakes are just true to size and the others were a bit off. Started with a burgundy pair, then just had to get the white, and now this black pair, to go along with my beetle/black mountain shoes. And may just have to get a pair of the new fluo yellow/red road shoes.

Great feeling footbed

I came from a pair of Fizik R5B shoes that tapered too much. The toe box on these Lake shoes is just perfect as it leaves room for some swelling that occurs after the first hour or so on the bike. They have a hugging heal cup with a great shape, plus the matereal ensures there is no lift. Very Happy so far. I picked them out of a large group of shoes that I tried at the same time.

Why didn't I buy these sooner?

These shoes feel amazing! Used sizing guidance on the Lake website and fit is just right. I had North Wave shoes that I thought were ok but were too narrow and tightness got worse when I added better insoles with more arch support. These Lakes have more width and volume and are so comfortable! The quality is evident and the natural leather is supple and but supportive. Can dial in just right with the boa dials. Shoes are so critical to how comfortable and enjoyable your cycling experience will be. I should have prioritized this purchase long ago!

Best shoe I?ve owned

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The first time I put them on, even before I attached the cleats, I knew they were keepers. I had not planned to spend that much money. They have a large toe box which is just what I need while the upper softly hugs your foot. The arch is nice These are my first shoes with carbon soles. What a difference. Pedaling is like being on an elliptical like you?re whole foot is applying pressure. Lake has won me over..

Worthy Successor to the CX237

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:
EU44
Weight:
168

After trying on, buying, and selling countless shoes I finally found my perfect fit: the CX237. I rode the CX237 for a year before the inner lining tore and I had them replaced with the CX238. I've been riding the CX238 now for a year and three months. For those of us with wonky feet, the wonderful fit of the CX237 carries over to the CX238 (I have duck feet). The inner lining is significantly more durable than the CX237. The tongue and ventilation are a bit better. The cleat alignment marks are still crooked. The BOAs are still wonderful. With approximately 7,500 miles and 360 hours, they are still going. My riding has been 70% outside in moderate to high heat and 50-90% humidity and 30% on an indoor trainer. By now the upper lip of the tongue has lost its pliability (not nearly as badly as the CX237) and the outer leather, near the inner ball of my foot, has started to tear. I have done nothing to care for them, though. Perhaps proactive leather conditioner would turn these into 15,000+ mile shoes?

Sizing? (updated)

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Size Bought:
45
Height:
5' 10"
Weight:
170

I have not ridden with these yet. I used the chart, and ordered what I thought was the correct size, 44.5 (same as my current Shimanos). They were too small. Have returned them for 45s, and hoping they fit. But according to that chart someone with an 11.5 shoe should use a 45. no way my feet are that big. Update: The 45s arrived and they are a perfect fit. After one 35 mile ride it's easy to tell how good these shoes are. Comfortable, and a really stiff sole. Also have good arch support and a comfortable heel cup. Excellent shoes.

Finally

Familiarity:

I really like this shoe. I have bought lots of different shoes looking for the perfect fit and look, This is the first shoe that is comfortable and where I don't get any slip in my heal. I have a high instep and narrow heal. To accommodate my instep I normally have to buy an 11 in shoes and sneaker even though my foot measures a 10/10.5. This has been an issue in cycling shoes because the extra length means lots of heal slippage. If I crank if down to prevent that, my arch gets crushed. With Lake I can a nice fit, no heal slippage and no pain. But, the Lake is not the sleekest looking shoe on the market. But I will trade performance over style any day. Lake also has a great sizing protocol on their website. Follow it, it works!
