Description

Sherpa 2.0 Bike Rack

Tube damage from over-zealous clamping, flying road debris, quick-release skewers molesting frames—the dangers of auto-borne bikes are rightly feared. Kuat's Sherpa 2.0 Bike Rack addresses many of our rack-related reservations by securing the bikes in sleds without wrenching down on the top tube and leaving an expanded 14in between each machine. The sleds are reinforced to support bikes weighing up to 40lb, and the foot-actuated pivot lever lets you unfold the rack when your upstairs appendages are occupied with bikes or laden with trip supplies.

  • A two-bike hitch rack that carries up to 80lb
  • Includes semi-integrated lock for security
  • Foot lever allows you to fold rack down hands-free
  • No-tool assembly saves time and stress

This thing is a perfect fit for my Honda HRV. It’s is light yet durable and the bikes don’t touch. Also had a built in lock to secure the bikes as well as a locking pin.

Put together is a snap. Attached to car in a snap. Put 2 bikes on it in a snap. Unloaded 2 bikes from it on a snap. Why can’t all things be this easy?! It’s pricey but definitely worth it.

Decided on this one over the more expensive one. Figured I wouldn’t need the fat tire capacity or built in work stand. Glad I saved the money. This rack is super solid, easy to set up and light enough to move it between cars or remove when not in use. Procrastinated a long time before finally popping for this. So glad I finally did.

I was gifted a Sherpa 2.0 and installed it on my car yesterday but I can’t get the hitch pin unlocked to remove the rack. The metal flap over the key hole won’t move aside when I press the key to it, thus the rack is stuck on my car. I don’t want to have to cut the pin and buy another so are there any tips to unlocking a frozen lock?

Awesome rack

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

This rack looks great, is easy to install/remove, and is stable. I really appreciate how light weight it is compared to many other racks of this type. Assembly is required, but the instructions are good, and the packaging supports the rack when your putting it together.

Great rack w one caveat

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I finally decided to graduate from strap style trunk racks and get the Kuat. Trunk rack was actually okay for one bike but it would be too hard to put two bikes on it without them bumping together. I’ve had roof racks over the years but never liked using them at highway speeds b/c of the obvious drag. Plus putting the rack on and aligning towers is a pain and I didn’t want a rack “living” full time on my roof. If you get this Kuat you’ll need a hitch for it (about $100 I think) and if you’re not adept and working the underside of your vehicle someone to install the hitch. I can’t remember exactly but I think it was about $200-250 to get hitch and installation at a local rack specialist. The rack itself required a bit of putting together and considering its obvious quality, the included instructions were very poor and the videos on the Kuat site were more marketing than instructional. I’m sure there has to be something much better on you-tube but I didn’t search this out. Anyway, that all aside, I really do like the rack. I never feel any wind resistance ( or howling) when using it. Rarely have two bikes on it, but that hasn’t been a problem. Super easy to take off and on—so I can use on a “as needed” basis (and not have to present an expensive rack as theft bait). Yeah, the cable that comes to lock the bike to the rack is really nothing, but is probably good enough for a quick trip into a store. Biggest drawback of the rack is that you can’t use a front fender with it—sort of a bummer for winter riding. Overall I really like the rack.

Love it!

I love this bike rack! It looks so stylish on the back of my car. The bikes are easy to get on/off and are very secure. I look forward to many years of use. Definitely worth the extra money.

My only concern was how sturdy it would be vs. a OneUp rack. No issues there as the cam adjuster makes it super steady. Wicked easy to set up, attach, and put a bike on. Love this rack.

Look elsewhere for a premium rack

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I received the rack quickly from Backcountry and it was well packaged by Kuat. After unboxing I realized the security cable is grossly under-engineered for the job. The lock is too short with a poor locking mechanism and not at all what you would expect from a $500 rack designed to hold bikes costing thousands of dollars. While the rack is rated to a 47" wheelbase, anything over 45" requires a cheap velcro strap which is not installed and with no explanation on how to integrate with the rack other than wrapping it around the tray. Come on... Kuat - it's close but you cheesed out on the final details. Yes it is useable, but I won't be recommending it to friends.

UPDATE 10/6/20: I have used the Kuat Sherpa rack several times now, and it is better than I even expected! Coming from my old wobbly rack to this solid, no wobble work of art is so relieving. I no longer have to worry that the rack will snap off my car - this rack does not move. It's very important to position the front tire hook right at the fork in order to have a tight fit. I use the additional strap on the front tire just for piece of mind. This rack was expensive, but worth every penny for the comfort of knowing my bike is secure for as long and bumpy a ride as I will experience. 5 Stars! I finally ditched my old Hollywood Racks platform hitch rack and decided to upgrade to the Kuat Sherpa 2.0, which had excellent reviews and is expected to have much less wiggle than the Hollywood, which is my biggest issue with it. The shipping from Backcountry was great - arrived in less than a week after ordering. The container is extremely well thought out and the shipping container actually doubles as a platform for the installation, which is brilliant. Including every tool you need, and they are quality tools, is icing on the cake. They did not have to do that, but the fact they did makes life so much easier. There was a bit of a tricky part during the install, and thanks to someone who reviewed the rack on another site, it saved me from almost giving up. I had the exact same scenario as this person: One thing to watch out for! The instructions tell you in Step 5 to install and tighten the long bolts that hold the platforms to the main crossbar, then insert a perpendicular bolt below in the "rear tray holder". In my case, inserting this third bolt was impossible once the long bolts were tight. I had to loosen everything up, back off the rear tray holder, and then I could just barely install the third bolt through the rail holder. You have to really play with the long bolts, prior to installing them completely, while trying to get that smaller bolt through all the holes to be able to insert it all the way - only then can you finish installing the long bolts. It was not easy and there was a lot of pushing down hard on the first bracket where the smaller bolt needs to get through in order for it to fit - and fit barely. Other than that, the install was a breeze. I will also agree with someone else who reviewed that you really need to get the arm locked down in a secure spot on the front fork for a tight fit. That's important. The fold up and tilt back capabilities are really nice also. Super easy to move the rack while it's installed. I had to take off the Hollywood rack after every ride, and that was not fun. There's nothing worse than looking in the rearview mirror and seeing the bike swaying back and forth while driving 70+ mph down the freeway. I am hoping this Kuat rack holds much tighter and with little to no sway. I will report back after a couple rides, but I am extremely happy so far.

First, big thanks to Backcountry for having this in stock (late September 2020). I couldn't find this anywhere else, and not only did Backcountry have it in stock, but I got 15% off as a first-time buyer, with free shipping. Love you, Backcountry! Now the rack. Packaged very thoughtfully, excellent instructions, and robust, "real" tools included to put it together (not a tiny Allen wrench like you'd get to assemble a table from Ikea). So thoughtful are the packaging and instructions, the primary part stays in the box, and you assemble secondary parts on it, with the box acting as a mini-workbench. Easy & quick to assemble, and it's of very good quality. Bike mounts easily, and is held steady (though you have to be quite certain to tightly fit that yolk around the top of the front fork). I think I'm really going to like this, and am excited to give it a try this weekend traveling to bike trails in Milwaukee County.

Will the 1.25" ever become available again? I have a 2016 Impreza hatchback and Uhaul only installs 1.25" hitches.

This has hands down been the best bike rack I've owned. It was light enough to assemble and also easy enough to put on my truck hitch. The structure is super solid and when I put my bike on the rack for long road trips I don't have to worry about it - which is huge. I would recommend this rack to anyone if they want something that is easy and effective.

Bought the 1.25" for the commuter car. Generally have two mountain bikes on it (trail bikes, not XC, not DH), and it is very solid and well made. They don't move very much, and the mounting seems very solid. Have used for several months without any problems. Happy with this so far.
