Item # KUA0020Finally, a fork mount rack for everyone.
We know exactly what you're thinking—this won't work for me, I have a
thru-axle. Well it does. The Kuat Trio Fork Mount System works with
9mm, 15mm, and 15mm Boost front axles. And because it's a fork mount, it will
accommodate any frame design. The Trio also has the sleek, modern style
that not only looks good but saves fuel. The icing on the cake is Kuat's
integrated cable lock system, which secures the frame and rear wheel to
the rack.
- Compatible with 9mm, 15mm, and 15mm Boost axles
- Compatible with any frame design
- Works with quick-release and thru-axles
- Integrated cable lock system

Not for Subaru factory racks
Purchased for my 2014 Subaru Outback. The rack will mount to the factory crossbars but the hatch will be damaged when attempting to open. The rack sits to far back and cannot be adjusted.
Free trunk space
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
This racks works great and is easy to use
Sleek and versatile
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Pros: Durable, versatile, easy to use, middle of the road price
Cons: Ease of assembly could be easier
With the Trio, you get compatibility with three axle standards out of the box with the ability to upgrade with adaptors for fat bikes.
Does the job
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
This rack does the job I need it to: 9mm QR and 15mm through axle (and 20mm TA) work out of the box; 12mm TA requires a $20 adapter. It's an effective do-it-all bike rack.
The problem, for me, is trying to put a through-axle bike on this rack when you're working alone. It's a challenge.
Build quality, etc. is up to the task, but the design is weak. There is no lip to catch your fork, so if your fork doesn't catch the housing you'll be doing this one-handed -- one hand for the fork and your other hand will be holding the bike upright. 3-star design, at best.
I've had none of the wind noise that others report and with a bike loaded this rack is solid at speed. Installation was snap, all parts included and everything fit together easily.
Nice, but had fit problems on my Outback
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
The rack is nicely made, really good looking, and fits 15mm thru axles. And you can get an optional axle mount for boost forks too.
Unfortunately, the trays are so low-profile (usually a good thing, right?) that the giant plastic side rails on my 2017 Subaru Outback interfere with sliding in and tightening down the fork axle. To allow room I had to move the trays way inboard of the side rails - which then doesn't leave enough space between 2 trays to allow for wide handlebars without the bikes tangling or bumping each other.
The alternative was to mount the trays out farther but reversed, so you insert the thru axles from the inboard side of the rack. But holding onto the bike and getting the axle lined up from the opposite side can be challenging. I've now got a dent in the roof of my new car to prove it :-(
So after fussing with racks and bikes for a while, I ended up returning them. Nothing against the racks themselves, they just didn't work with our particular car and bikes.
Excellente
Its a great solid rack. The only issue i have about this rack would be that it's a little difficult getting both forks on with one hand. its a bit challenging
Is there anything to deter someone from removing the rack from the cross bars? It looks like it secured with allen bolts in the front and twist bolts in the rear. Is there any locking feature for the rack itself?
The allen bolts on the front are five-sided instead of six-sided, so require a special wrench. That serves as a reasonable deterrent against someone swiping them off your car, but if theives have planned ahead and gotten the special wrench, there's nothing else to stop them.
Would this roof rack interfere with the hatch door on a Subaru Crosstrek? I'm using the Thule Aeroblades and moved it as far forward as possible. Thanks
Will this work with Thule crossbars
Will this work with Thule crossbars
According to Kuat it will fit cross bars that are "Max crossbar size-3.5? wide by 1.7? thick". I just measured my square bars and this should work on that just fine, I would be very skeptical of the Aero Bars though.
Yes, it works on Thule crossbars, and Yakima too, I think. I have a Saab rack on my Saab, which uses the same size crossbars as Thule, and it's no problem.
One thing to note about this rack, is that the front mounting point is not adjustable, so the rear of the rack may or may not clear on open tailgate from a hatchback. For me ( '99 Saab 9-3), it just clears, so no problem. For some other cars it might not work at all.
BTW, at $200, the rack is quite overpriced, considering the refinement of construction and materials. It works fine, but has some bugs, which a supposedly high end manufacturer like Kuat should have figured out.
The 3 different fork mount options are nice though, which is the main reason I picked this rack. I would not pay more than $100 for it, however.
One of the main irritations is that without a bike loaded, there is a fluttering/vibration noise from the rear wheel mount or the recessed cable lock that happens while driving. I have jammed a piece of wood in to stop this, but should not have to on a rack of this price.
I also had to call Kuat for a second rear mount kit for the rear bar, as the one included withe the rack was made of unusable cheap crap. The replacement one they sent me was fine.
In all, the rack works fine, and holds the bike securely, but again, the lack of refinement leads me to think that Kuat rushed this to production. Hopefully future editions will be better, as the overall design is good, and has a high degree of functionality.
@ Eric C: I've got 2 of these and I have no issues with quality. Also, pricing is lower on Kuat's website.
