Description

Power into the night.

There are hundreds of bike lights out there to choose from. Some are brighter than others, some loaded with more features, and some just make simple backups in case you forget your big ones at home. It can be tricky to determine what meets your needs the best when you're weighing through the options, but the Knog PWR Trail 1000 Headlight certainly piques our interest. It could be the PWR Trail's whopping 1000-lumens that light your way, or its easy to use mounting system, but what we think seals the deal is the lights versatility. The PWR Trail is completely modular, in this case it means that the light and battery mount can be separated entirely, so you can swap different light heads, or use the battery pack for other devices.

The battery pack, or PWR Bank, can hook up to your bluetooth speaker, phone, or other USB powered device to give battery life to more than your light. The light its self hosts impressive features, too, like completely programmable functions thanks to the ModeMaker app, allowing you to harness the optimum lighting for your ride based on ride time and light needed. Instead of attempting to fumble with buttons in the dark, the light uses a twist feature to turn off, on, and switch between modes, which is easier to do with riding gloves on, and on dark trails where you can't see the buttons in front of you. The PWR Trail uses a unique mounting system that attaches on the side, and enables you to run the light on top or underneath your bar, under your stem, as well as on your helmet, giving you optimal point of view as you ride, and the whole unit is easy to recharge with the included USB charging cord.

  • A modular headlight for hitting the trail
  • Illuminate the trail with up to 1000-lumens
  • PWR pack disconnects to charge other devices
  • Mounts cleanly to top or underside of bars
  • ModeMaker app allows you to program light modes
  • Twist-on-and-off for easy adjusting during riding
  • 6-modes accommodates different riding needs

Nice light, but flimsy attachment

I favor Knog lights because they are well build (with the exception of the band straps that tend to break and are permanently affixed to some models, meaning when they break, you are done). This Trail model is substantial, has a powerful light and really pierces the night in the blinking mode - people see you! But, the handlebar attachment is a failure. First, attaching it to the light is fairly straightforward once you figure out how it works, but the wheel to loosen and tighten is so small and it is so painful to your fingers to use. Second, attaching the light to the bar is an exercise in frustration. The lever to clamp is not well designed. It is difficult to attach. And the whole light shakes and you worry constantly that it will fall off the bar.

    Light Up the Night!

As noted by the previous review, this is an incredibly powerful light! The output, throw, and light pattern is great. The light also has a great bright white quality to it and the battery life is excellent (the battery gauge is definitely a great feature, as well). The only thing keeping this light from getting 5 stars is the mount. It's a challenge to get the mount tight on the bars and it feels flimsy once you do.

      The mount is garbage

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This light is tough, powerful and the battery lasts a good long while. The field of illumination is perfect for good visibility at even fairly high speeds in darker conditions. The separate battery and light sections mean great replacement options for longevity should one part ever break or wear out. You can also use the battery to charge other devices, such as an iPhone. You can also use an iPad charger to charge the thing - this works really quickly, which is great.
The handlebar mount is a disaster, however. The thumb wheel used to cinch the light down to the attachment rails is far too small and lightly built to do the job. You have to really torque it with your thumb to get it to firmly cinch, and it will have a short life span. The mount's attachment to the handlebar is also flimsy and if you ride over even rough roads don't be surprised to have it come off of the bars mid-ride.
