Item # KIN000D

Roll compact.

According to Kinetic, the Minneapolis-based manufacturer has received multiple requests for rollers throughout the years, but was loathe to take the plunge until it could "do something different." Well, different is here, courtesy of the extremely portable and storable Kinetic Z Rollers.

Different looks like one-third the length of traditional rollers, as the Z Rollers fold on two hinges to stack like a deflated Z into a space that's smaller than most foldable trainers would need. This means the rollers fit under a bed, in a closet, or in your car for easy transportation to the pre-race staging area.

The rollers feature lightweight aluminum drums and the forever-running smoothness of steel bearings. The bearings are quiet enough that you can use them to warm-up before a race without drawing the ire of everyone in the vicinity. The adjustable front roller accommodates a wheelbase from 97 to 110 centimeters, so they fit virtually every bicycle size.

4.5 stars if i could

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

they work well, fold up fairly small, i have no issues with any of the parts or keeping the rollers clean over the past few years, and overall im pretty happy with em. being a foldable one they have pivot points which actually can be sharp but not really a hazard just a thing to note when carrying them around to races. the drums are veryyyy slightly grooved. which makes them a tad bit louder then a smooth drum but its not an issue. theyre quiet in operation for the most part unless youre doing 180rpm and 900w in which case you sound like a 747 trying to take off. if in an apartment id say get a mat underneath. if at home you shouldnt have any problems unless everyones trying to sleep.

Excellent Training Tool!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I am new to rollers, and was on the fence about 'em. I'm certainly glad I pulled the trigger on these, priced nicely and great quality. As you can see, my training spot isn't the most spacious, so the foldability of the unit is a huge plus. No assembly was required, just pull them out of the box and get going! Quick shipping as well from Comp. Cyclist, Overall very happy!

Excellent Training Tool!

Nice review!
How quiet are they? Is this something you could use in an apartment and not worry about disturbing the neighbours?

I think you could get away with using them in an apartment. You'd probably need a pad or something to absorb vibration. They are relatively quiet, but when you sprint/surge they make a little noise (a sort of washing machine sound). It they are too loud indoors, you can fold them up and punish your legs outside!

I found them to be much quieter than a CycleOps Fluid2 trainer (my only other indoor trainer to compare to). I can only hear my drive train - the rollers are near silent.

How difficult is it to balance on rollers and especially with clip pedals and nothing locking you in place?

I've not bought them yet but friends say just starting out to place rollers between doorway so you have something to grab while you're getting used to them. I hear everyone falls some while getting the hang of it.
