Road Machine Smart Control Trainer

Infuse some extra motivation into your winter training regimen with Kinetic's Road Machine Smart Control Trainer. Taking the form of a traditional wheel-on trainer and stealthily outfitted with Bluetooth Smart capability, the Road Machine lets you connect to a variety of third-party apps, including Zwift and TrainerRoad for a more interactive indoor ride experience. As an added touch, it comes packaged with its own quick-release trainer skewer so you ride assured that your race skewers will remain unscratched, while bikes with rear thru-axles require Kinetic's Traxle thru-axle adapter for use on any trainer.

Kinetic's Road Resistance Unit boasts a stainless steel roller with a beefy 2.5in (6.35cm) diameter, which is a good bit larger than much of the competition. The larger roller means less wear on your tire and it reduces the temperature of the spinning elements. The right side has a 14.4-pound flywheel, one of the heaviest around, that gives the satisfying feeling of momentum when you're spinning up to speed, holding speed, and slowing down. On the left side is a unique two-part fluid resistance unit, which is the heart of their system, replicating a max slope of 10% and max resistance of 1800 watts at 30 mph.

As with all trainers, this system builds heat from friction as your ride, and your energy has to go somewhere. To counteract this, Kinetic adds an internal fan and 80 cooling fins on the outside to help dissipate heat. It's almost impossible to overheat the unit or reach a point where performance is diminished. The silicone fluid retains its physical properties, even up to the normal operating temperature of 325-degrees Fahrenheit while riding at 25mph, resulting in a consistent road-like power curve that increases as your speed increases.

Bad customer service and product

I've put it through the wringer

Bought this a year ago December and never got it to work correctly. Updating with the Firmware was difficult, the spin down calibration didn't calibrate correctly and after about a month of use it developed a grinding type noise especially under load like climbing. The noise was worse when the climb steepened. At the top a hill (With Rouvy app) the tension wouldn't release like it should on a descent. I had to get off the bike and unplug the unit so it would "reset". It happened every 5 minutes or so after the initial time on a ride. I sent repeated emails about the issues and got nothing but attitude back. I never got the option of sending it back for service even though its still under warranty. It would be nice if they stood behind their product. Go with another brand...….

Not That Great

I've put it through the wringer

The trainer rides fine once it's set up but I've had persistent issues with connecting to various training apps, and the Kinetic Fit app is not the most user-friendly thing ever. It takes quite awhile to get everything working, and just makes it somewhat inconvenient to want to ride the trainer. Kinetic's support team hasn't really been too helpful either, unfortunately. I'd recommend checking out Wahoo or Tacx instead of Kinetic. Bummer!

Is this unit compatible with Zwift?

Train Away!

I've used it several times

I’ve used just about every ergometer trainer on the market, and have been surprisingly happy with the Kinetic Smart Control resistance unit. The flywheel is significantly heavier than the other similar trainers, so not only do you get a more realistic ride feel, changes in power during workouts are more pronounced, making for a more realistic and controlled workout. The frame is also very stable (though I would recommend greasing the threads for the clamps while assembling). Overall, great experience, easy to use apps; 10/10 would recommend.
