Description

Why We Like The Utopia Helmet

It's been years since aerodynamic helmets first appeared with regularity in the pro peloton during road stages. It's a critical place for drag reduction, so much so that many cyclists were willing to look past the extra weight and lack of ventilation inherent in aero helmet designs. With today's higher speeds, it's not uncommon at all to find escape artists, loyal domestiques at the head of the field, and the fastest sprinters all sporting aero lids. Kask is no stranger to supplying some of the highest quality helmets to pros and amateurs alike and thanks to models like the Utopia Helmet we have here, you don't have to make sacrifices to weight and ventilation while achieving aero gains.

Kask spent numerous hours in the wind tunnel to tune the shape of the shell so it's slippier at various yaw angles, not just head on. This allows the helmet to achieve lower drag numbers in real-world conditions as well as allow the HyVent technology to work better. HyVent allows for air flow across the top of the head while exchanging and exhausting the excess heat, ideal on scorching days and extended climbs.

  • An aero helmet that doesn't forget ventilation and weight savings
  • MIT in-mold shell increases structural integrity
  • Aerodynamically shaped from hours of wind tunnel testing
  • Octo Fit allows for customized adjustments
  • HyVent channels encourage air flow for a cooler head
  • 3D DRY padding wicks moisture and dries quickly
  • Faux leather chin strap offers long-ride comfort
  • MIT technology claims to improve the helmet's overall safety

This is the best fitting helmet I have ever worn. The dial automatically adjusts, and fits both oval and round shapes. The only issue I have with the helmet is that the plastic parts of the retention system have sharp edges. I had to file them down a bit to smooth them out.

This helmet is awful for me!!

If you have a normal shaped head, this helmet won’t work for you. I have a lot of hair, so always have to go with larger helmets to accommodate my hair and the cap I wear underneath. I own two other Kask Protone and POC Ventral Airspin, which are all great. This Kask Utopia has the oddest shape. If your head is like a long oval, this helmet will probably be a match made in heaven for you. There are two thin narrow padded strips that come forward, running vertically at the front of the helmet. They rest against your forehead. After a long ride, I had semi-permanent marks from these strips. They eventually went away after a few hours. When I tried to adjust the helmet a bit more to avoid this irritation, the helmet was too loose. I love the Kask brand, but this Utopia was a big “No” for me! Unfortunately, since I wore it once- I wasn’t able to return it where I purchased on sale from Excel Sports in CO. Be mindful of purchasing from them for this reason. Most places will at least give you a credit if you’re unhappy with the product.

Same here! Want to like it, but have the same experience. Any ride over an hour and those front pads are just killing my forehead. Bad enough where I have to loosen it all the way up when I stop at traffic lights and retighten when I start going again. Takes hours for the head dents to go away after. Too bad, otherwise a really nice helmet.

I crashed at about 28mph and landed on the back on my head and back after going over the handlebars (long story). This helmet literally saved my life; not even a concussion. The helmet is destroyed. I bought another Utopia because of my experience. It may be that I was lucky, which is most likely, but my head survived from the helmet.

Hello Chris. Looks like you hit the concrete pretty hard. I'm glad you are here to tell about it. I can definitely relate to that. I also hit the concrete side/head first violently and had a concussion this summer at 4:30am at the trail. If I passed out, only God knows. Since there wasn't a single soul around to confirm. Yes, the mojito saved my life. Used to ride around in circles without it sometimes, never again. Without that helmet, would have definitely cracked my skull and... Ended up with a broken hand also. It was my first concussion and 6 months later, I still get the imbalance when I get up from a horizontal position. Just stopped by here today bc Santa is paying for another helmet 😁

The Protone has long been one of my favorite helmets. Great fit and good construction to include the nice leather strap. The Utopia is similar in fit to the Protone so this is a great option if you like the Protone. I’ve been surprised on the comfort and the venting versus some of the reviews I’d seen leading up to the purchase. I haven’t had any comfort issues even on 4-5 hour rides and it vents really well for an aero helmet. Is it more aero than the Protone, it’s hard to say for sure without going to a wind tunnel but I don’t think I’m losing anything in comfort or temperature management so why not!

I was extremely surprised on how well this helmet vents. The vents seem to force air into the channels causing the air to sweep over your head before exiting the back. As for quiet, I have rode with this helmet in cross winds as well as down hill speeds well over 35mph and never heard a whisper. The orange in the picture does not due this helmet justice as the picture seems to show a bit of reddish orange to me. This helmet is high viz orange and can been seen from quite some distance away which is a great safety feature. When it comes to fit, I have more of an oval head and this helmet fits me great. My head measures 58cm and with a Halo headband the medium size fits me without much room to spare or any pinching. While the straps are not adjustable under the ears, they just seem to fit perfect for me by being just under my ears without pulling up at them. The leather strap is a nice classy touch which does not feel like sand paper after long hours in the saddle. I honestly could not say whether this helmet saves any watts or makes me any faster. But I can say that it looks awesome and is extremely comfortable. While the price may give a few a bit of sticker shock (myself included), I can tell you that I have absolutely no buyers remorse.

I’ve had a few different brands over the years. I’ve got a Kask Protone as well that I thought I’d rotate with the utopia. After my first ride with the utopia the protone hasn’t been used! This helmet has superb ventilation (as good as the Protone) and is comfortable to me. I can’t speak to drag figures but noise means turbulence and this lid is very, very quiet. If it fits your noggin I think you’ll love it.

Very nice helmet; well-made; a tad heavier than other helmets, but not extreme; the “Y” shape of the straps that sit underneath your earlobes are great. The straps sit flat; there is no bunching. All helmets should have this feature. It looks aero. Does it saves watts? Who knows. It would be nice if it had MIPS. Hopefully, future models will incorporate this safety feature. Did I mention that my helmet is orange?
