Description

Strike Knee/Shin Guard

Honeycomb-style protection is all the rage these days, so it's no surprise that the innovators at Kali Protectives jumped on the bandwagon with the Strike Knee/Shin Guard. These guards feature a molded Xelion knee cap that takes the brunt of big blows, while allowing air to pass through so you can keep cooler. The sides of the guards are decked out with EVA pads to elevate the protection for charging big lines where error isn't an option. The top and bottoms of the pads feature silicone grippers to keep them locked into place, and utilize hook and loop straps on the top to keep them extra secure. Carrying breathability from the front to back of the guards, Kali Protectives uses a lightweight mesh along the back of the knee, so sweat can be wicked away and fresh air can meet your skin for ultimate cool riding.

  • Low profile protection with next level breathability
  • Molded Xelion knee cap takes the brunt of blows
  • EVA padded sides protect from stray branches
  • Mesh backing helps wick away sweat and breathe
  • Hook and loop closure secures guards in palce
  • Silicone grippers on top and bottom prevent mid-ride slippage

Great lightweight pads. Sizing is weird.

First let me explain why I gave 4 stars. It's because the sizing is weird. I used their sizing chart and was 1 cm above the threshold for a large pad in the thighs but my calves measured in the medium range. So I took a chance and bought the larges. The large pads were still form-fitting around the legs but they were too loose and kept riding down my legs as I pedalled as the calves weren't as tight as they should be. So I returned them and got the mediums. All I can say is wow what a difference they made! The thigh is perhaps slightly too tight for me as my thighs and calves both are not medium in measurement for this pad, but that feeling goes away quickly as you get into riding. The pads do stay put and I tended to forget about them. They do slide down your legs just a tiny bit at the start of your ride but then they quickly find a spot and stay put for the rest of it. So I guess, if you have properly proportional thighs and calves, then these pads will fit true to size. If your calves are don't align with your thigh measurement, then I recommend going with the size of your calves if the measurement is not too far off from the size according to your thighs. They are pretty well ventilated, but I still got knee sweat in them. I think this sweat is inevitable as they have no holes or gaps in the fabric as it as a totally encompassing mesh around the knee joint. In terms of protection, I got into a minor crash by falling off a skinny log and I definitely scraped my knees against the rough log as I fell but I felt nothing. I only knew I hit the tree as I saw pieces of bark lodged in the pad vent holes. So I can say that they'll protect against small to medium direct knee impacts. Against major crashes I don't think they'll do much as they don't have great lateral stability. Large impact forces can easily cause the pads to slide away from your knee cap and cause injury. But, I knew this going in. I bought them for the flexibility and lightweight duty nature of the pads. I just wanted to avoid scratches and rash from falling. Also a big shout out to Seth's Bike Hacks for this recommendation. If it's good for him, then it's good for me too!

Good pad but thin fabric

I got these pads for my boyfriend and the pad itself is fine. However, the seams around the pad started to rip after only a few uses. They are still functional and comfy but I don't think they are going to last too long. The reviews for these pads are great so maybe we got a faulty pair?

Comfortable, Stays Put, Great Fit

These proved to be a great fit and very comfortable to ride in. No issues with them sliding down or having to constantly reposition them to ensure they stay where I want them. Only issue is that after the first ride the pad started to separate at the seams. I figured I'd replace them if they get worse, but after nearly a year of riding with them they've held up without further ripping/tearing at the seam where the pad is sewn into the stretch fabric. I also managed to make a few holes in the stretch mesh behind the knee area, but it hasn't hindered their ability to hold in place. I'll continue to wear them out before seeking a replacement.

I saw these on Seth's video and I just had to pick them up. These knee pads are perfect for trail riding. I would not recommend them for downhill or hardcore enduro but they do have good protection. These are extremely comfortable to pedal and I almost forget they are there. The ventilation is also top notch and sweat is not a problem.

Not my preference

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

I ended up returning these before using them. The kneecap wasn't a good shape for my knee and I found that the material wasn't conforming enough considering that it was a soft kneepad to begin with. I ended up getting the Leatt Airflex pro and it conforms to my knee much better.

Digging these pads, I haven't taken a serious digger in them yet but feel when I do they will be up to the task. I was wearing a much thinner pad with less protection which I still use on my more XC rides, but for a run in the Mountains with some serious descending I grab these first. I was a bit in between the S and M on the size chart and went with the small just for the fact that I wanted it a bit tighter around the knees. I'll measure my calf and thigh and add that to my review, if my calf was any bigger they would be to tight. They stay in place and are pretty comfortable. My only complaint is that if you happen to kneel down in dirt or take a digger you will end up with dirt in the open part of the pad which can then fall out on the floor in the house. All in all great pad!
