Kali Protectives' new Interceptor Helmet pushes the industry another step forward in the quest for ever more protective helmets. This helmet utilizes Kali's Low Density Layer (LDL) technology, and while those initials have historically been associated with a decidedly unhealthy type of cholesterol, this LDL is putting a positive spin on that specific set of letters. LDL utilizes strategically placed Armourgel padding on the interior of the helmet in an effort to reduce rotational forces as well as minimize the low-g linear forces associated with sub-concussive impacts.

The key to Armourgel's utility is a vinyl nitrate compound that Kali dubs "Bumper Fit", which acts similarly to the D30 padding found in high-end body armor. It's compliant when at rest, serving as a memory foam to increase comfort and reduce hot spots. Upon impact, Armourgel hardens to help dissipate force and provide a dose of extra protection compared to standard-construction helmets. Kali claims that LDL reduces low-g linear forces up to 30% and reduces rotational impact forces up to 25%, which means you can hit the trail with added peace of mind that you're rolling with some of the best protection currently available for trail helmets.

  • A trail-worthy helmet with innovative protection
  • LDL tech aims to reduce rotational and low-g linear impact forces
  • Durable shell construction with EPS foam
  • Large vents promote cooling airflow
  • Extended coverage at the back of the head increases protection area
  • Highly adjustable BOA dial retention system
  • Adjustable visor shades from the sun and fends off errant branches
  • Accessory mounting system for lights and other devices

My new favorite helmet

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have to say that I am impressed with this helmet in many ways. I find the fit to be extremely comfortable and cranking the retention band tight never creates hot spots on my head. Speaking of the retention band, BOA also offers lifetime warranty so that is just another aspect of this helmet that is a plus. I chose the helmet because Kali has a lifetime crash replacement warranty and I wanted to stay away from MIPS helmets as they have been shown to be ineffective. Additionally, the light/go-pro mount works effectively.

I did have an issue with sizing at first and had to move up a size despite having a 59cm head size, which should be a s/m. That said, I did not detract stars for that as the right size helmet fits perfectly.

Lastly, ventilation on the helmet seems to be just as good as a road bike helmet like a Specialized Prevail or Prevail 2, which is impressive.

If you are considering a new helmet, I would highly recommend this one.

2 thumbs up!

I gravitated towards this helmet because I'm not 100% sold on MIPS technology. I think this LDL system makes more sense personally, and it appeared to be very well ventilated. So I pulled the trigger sight unseen, and I've been nothing but pleased.

For starters, I really like the looks. I've been complimented several times on the helmet. It looks and feels high quality. I mainly ride in Oklahoma/Arkansas, and our summer heat is absolutely tremendous and the humidity is horrible to boot. On 90 degree days I can without a doubt say that this is much better ventilated than my Bell Super 2r and Troy Lee A1. Not even a comparison really...

The fit is quite nice, I like it for the most part. It's not quite as comfortable as the A1 helmet, but I will trade a small amount of comfort for a huge bump in ventilation. I don't notice it on long rides (3-5hrs), and its quite light.

Overall I'd rate it a 4.5, but I'm giving it a 5 star official rating because its definitely better than 4 stars!
