Ready for anything.

Revived and ready to go, the 2017 Juliana Joplin Carbon CC Mountain Bike Frame comes to us with tweaked geometry, new suspension tunes, and a whole lot of updates to catch up with industry trends, making it a fan-favorite for the shorter-travel trail rider. Liker her twin brother, the Tallboy, the Joplin's 29er wagon wheel attitude received some tweaks that have shifted it away from its XC racer roots and into the all-mountain capable ride, thanks to a slacker head tube angle, and wider rear spacing that keep it snappy and nimble. This wide rear end also enables riders to choose between running plush 27.5+ wheels, or fast rolling 29ers, so you can dial in whatever best fits your riding preferences, and the terrain you roll on.

With no major changes since the Joplin's debut in 2013, we were excited to see the changes that were made to the bike with its newest tweaks and updates. Catching up with modern trends, the Joplin was stretched, poked and prodded into its new form, with a 2.2-degree slacker head tube angle for a more stable descent, steeper seat tube angle, to keep you centered in the cockpit for serious pedal power, and the stretched out hub spacing. The Joplin's move to Boost, 12 x 148mm hub spacing in the rear enabled designers to shorten the chainstays by over 1/2-inch, making for a snappier rear end, while accommodating different wheel sizes as well, so you can run either the wagon-wheel 29er or lock your tread through loose corners and add an extra plush touch with a 27.5+ setup.

To enable the switch between 29ers and their 27-plus counterparts, the Joplin uses a flip-chip that sits in the upper link, and rotates to allow the shock mount to migrate. This flip moves the shock attachment point, effectively accounting for the 9mm difference in radius between 29ers and their plus partners, so you don't feel a major change in geometry despite the change in wheels. The Joplin is Juliana's debut of the flip chip, which we saw previously in the Santa Cruz Hightower, where it was given a true test before sending it to the lines for us to enjoy. Unlike on the Hightower, the Joplin's head tube stays at a consistent angle no matter what wheel size you run, though this is partly because Juliana recommends a fork swap when running a 27.5+ setup, going with a 130mm instead of 120mm, allowing for an extra 10-millimeters in height in the front, and consequently, 10-millimeters more of bump-soaking squish.

The VPP suspension also saw some tweaks and turns, adding an extra 10mm of travel to push the Joplin into its well-loved versatile personality, and an updated tune. Juliana's market research found that women weigh, on average, thirty pounds less than our male counterparts, and to keep the suspension feeling just as plush for us, it was updated with a women's specific tune that's designed to soak up more roots and rocks, with less rider weight on top. The suspension tuning on VPP was altered all together, though, not just for our light weight, with a suspension curve that ramps more slowly than before to give us small bump compliance in the beginning of the stroke, and consistent support as we delve deeper into the travel. With 4.5-inches of squish, you'll be able to soak up chunkier terrain than before, and feel confident all over the mountain. The Joplin doesn't fit in with all of the other all-mountain bikes, though, we like to think of her as two-faced, bouncing between the floaty traction and plus-sized personality of the 27.5+ trail bike, and the race rocket 29er that's hungry for miles, with nimble geometry.

Juliana’s industry-leading carbon fiber construction makes its way to the Joplin with this version seeing the top-tier CC level of carbon. This method uses less carbon fiber, with more precise and deliberate layups, to achieve a frame with exceptional strength, at minimal weight. You'll find it's as stiff as its heavier counter part, the standard carbon Joplin, but without some of the weight. The frame is molded with its two carbon triangles as whole pieces rather than glued together from disparate bits, a method that saves weight and increases structural integrity by allowing Juliana to wrap carbon continuously through and around key junctures. This process reinforces the frame with less material while eliminating the artificial stress points that result from bonded construction methods. Finally, the carbon is also compacted from both the inside and outside for a more even finish that avoids any structural defects, excess material build-up, and resin pooling for even more weight savings.
