Description

Best of both worlds.

You love the way glacier goggles protect your eyes from intense light when you're on the mountain, but you hate the way they make you look like a mad scientist/space alien when you're back in town. The Julbo Montebianco Sunglasses with Zebra Antifog Lenses give you the hardcore protection you need and the style you want so you only need one pair of shades for everything.
  • Zebra lenses have high-speed photochromic activation and darken almost instantly in bright light
  • Anti-fog treatment is laser finished so it never rubs off
  • Removable wings block light and glare from the side or can be left behind when you're back in the valley
  • Grip tech sculpted inserts on the stems help these sunglasses stay put

Great Glasses

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

These glasses are certainly not the darkest, but I have really like their performance. I have been out in snowfields and summits all day in glaring sunlight with these and never had an issue with the lenses. They do fit my face a little bit oddly, so after all day wearing them, the sides of my head, right in front of my ears does hurt a little bit. That is the only reason for 4 stars. I am a very warm climber and even wearing a baseball cap that reflected heat back towards the glasses, I didn't have issues with fogging at all. The photochromatic lenses are great. I can wear these glasses from the minute the sunrise starts to peak over the horizon well until after dusk, no matter the cloud cover and not have to worry about not being able to see different contrasts.

I would recommend these glasses for sure. Feel free to reach directly out to me with any questions on these glasses or any mountaineering gear questions.

Great Glasses

Definitely worth a look

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I have owned Julbo glasses in the past, and have been very happy with the lenses. These are no exception. I really like th photochromatic lens for ice. I woe these right up till duck and could see quite well. Never had any problem in shady areas, and get plenty dark enough in bright light as well. Amber lens is good in snow/ice. Styling according to my GF is really good.. so good that she ordered the women's version for herself. Anti fog works well, but I sweat pretty heavily, and in sub zero NH conditions I did get an ice glaze over one lens ? never fogged but kept icing up. Probably just me, and thats why I did not give 5 stars which may be a bit unfair. There is not a rubber nose piece if you like those, so may not be best glasses for cycling or hot and sweaty climbing. they did not move on my face at all, and felt quite secure but comfortable. The box for glasses is quite lightweight, but rectangular and honestly a bit bulky. You can put a few small items in there while it lives in the lid of your pack I guess. Definitely worth a look

Not as dark as expected

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

It doesn't say it here on the backcountry.com page, but Julbo advertises these Zebra lenses as having a darkness range from category 2-4.

I already owned the Julbo Colorado glasses with the Spectron category 4 lens and I liked the idea of a pair of glasses that could get that dark but didn't have to be that dark all the time. I bought these and found that even in direct sunlight they do not get anywhere near as dark as my other category 4 lenses.

I emailed Julbo and was told that these only darken to the "lighter side of category 4". I don't know how they figure out the categories, but saying these darken to category 4 feels misleading. They are not dark enough for glacier travel or even rock climbing on a sunny day without squinting constantly.

Aside from the lens issue, they are comfortable glasses. Good for cloudy winter days skiing or climbing. I have a pretty big head and the glasses do not stay on very securely in an activity like running. If I'm sweating hard, I find myself pushing them back up my nose every 30 seconds.

I ordered another pair with the normal Spectron 4 lenses for glacier travel.

I completely agree. These are not as dark as the Spectron lens. they are a great choice for in and out of the sun?say ice climbing. I would go Spectron 4 for all day out in snow, glacier and expecting minimal shade.
