Description

K-Sleeve

There are days for the full on body armor, but pedal-heavy trail days are not them. For the days when pedaling to the top sends you up thousands of feet, but you want some protection on the descent, reach for the Ion K-Sleeve. Super-lightweight, the K-Sleeve is made from 3D shaped mesh, with lighter weight mesh on the back, and slightly heavier weight mesh on the front, so your knees can breathe from all angles. The pad is made from high-density 3D molded memory foam that is perforated for keeping sweat moving away from your skin. This pad does not use a heavy-duty hardcap, since lightweight is the goal, but it provides excellent protection from scrapes and cuts if a loose berm sends you flying off the trail. The exterior of the memory foam pad is covered with an aramid fabric, which offers exceptional tear resistance in the event of a crash. The knee pads are stretchy all the way around, and secure into place with a silicone gripper at the top and bottom, but lack bulky straps, allowing them to pack down small so you can keep them in your hydration pack.

  • Ultra-light protection for pedal-heavy rides
  • 3-D shaped mesh keeps your legs breathing
  • HD memory foam pad protects your patella
  • Aramid fabric adds major abrasion resistance
  • Stretchy construction is comfortable when pedaling
  • Silicone grippers hold pad in place

These are excellent pads through and through. They're well ventilated, they fit well (make sure you follow Ion's sizing chart), and just padded enough to give you peace of mind on moderate descents. One thing to be careful of: the material on the back is very lightweight (great for keeping you cool) but susceptible to snags. But as long as you don't ride through rosebushes or whatever, you'll be fine.

After buying and really liking a pair of Ion shoes, I got these knee sleeves. Having worn them a few times now, I can say I’m really impressed. Very comfortable and high quality, like all my Ion gear.

nice pads but uncomfortable on me

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

I bought these wanting something lighter weight, with a little better coverage, but with a soft armor style vs the hard troy lee design knee guards I currently use (5xxx series i think). Kind of hoping they would be a comfortable pair of guards that I would then be more willing to grab on less aggressive and more pedally occasions. I tried them on and the grip, coverage, length, and looks were great. Couple of main gripes: 1. the padding when bent did not at all seemed designed to contour to knees so became bulky and uncomfortable 2. the fabric was extremely itchy. These issues may have resolved themselves after a couple of washes but I was so put off by the comfort factor out of the box I didn't want to risk it and will be returning them. Maybe I've just lucked out with the adventure moto (rev'it!), dirt bike (troy lee), and other mountain bike pads (troy lee) I've had thus far, but they were all far superior in comfort.

comfort

These are super comfortable, and don't bother me at all through up hill pedaling. They definitely offer less protection than other burlier knee pads, but are much more accommodating for strenuous rides.

Ion Rocks!

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I discovered this brand thanks to Backcountry and it puts all other knee pads to shame (except possibly the POC VPD 2.0 - but only as a contender for the best). I've been loving all the knee pads from them, and they are all a little different, which is great - different types of riding styles and preferences. The protection is also great, as I have crashed a few times on them and had no sliding and my knees were protected!
