Hakka MX Disc GRX Complete Gravel Bike
There are some bikes that implore us not to go too far off of smooth tarmac, and then there’s the Ibis Hakka MX, which begs us to turn off the pavement and onto something a bit more engaging. Whether rambling on fire roads, or racing over faint two-track, the Hakka’s confidence-inspiring geometry and capable build allows you to get further faster. Ibis designed the Hakka to be the “Swiss Army knife” of their lineup, compatible with both 700c and 650b wheels as well as a host of drivetrain options. The MonsterCross (MX) moniker is well-earned, as the Hakka MX is ready for anything from a weekend bikepacking trip to a Tuesday night training ride. This Hakka comes dressed to the nines with Shimano’s GRX drivetrain and Stan’s 700c Grail Wheels for optimal handling and performance on mixed terrain.
The previous generations of Hakkalugis did a pretty good job of crossing over into gravel and road rides, but both the geometry and tire clearance hinted at its 'cross roots. The Hakka MX takes cues from the OG Hakkalugi, but it extends its range, making it more of a complete all-rounder outside of the course tape. The relatively steep head tube and seat tube angles make for an efficient pedaling platform, while the short chainstays ensure the Hakka’s nimble nature around tight turns and features. Ibis mountain bikes have been built exclusively from carbon fiber for several years now, and their expertise with the material means they know how to build a stiff, light, durable, and responsive frame. A tapered headtube provides the perfect foundation of unyielding stiffness needed for excellent tracking, hard braking, and out of the saddle climbing. The included ENVE fork contributes to the stiffness while working in tandem with the frame to absorb the jolts from washboard descents and all the rocks and roots found off the beaten path.
The Hakka uses a T47 bb shell, which provides an oversized, threaded shell and cup that is easier to install and maintain and less likely to develop an irritating press-fit creaking, popping, and squeaking. A wider range of crank diameter spindles can be used without sacrificing bearing diameter and larger spindles forced in a standard diameter threaded shell. The bigger shell also yields larger contact areas between the tubes, which increases lateral stiffness and creates more room for wider tires. This Hakka model is spec’d with Shimano’s GRX 1x11 drivetrain, with ample gearing to get you up and over that next ridgeline. ENVE cockpit components ensure a comfortable and lightweight ride, while the Stan’s Grail Wheels and Maxxis Rambler 40mm tires provide the confidence to get you there.
