Why We Like The Ibis DV9 Mountain Bike Frame

The Ibis DV9 is back and better than ever after a brief hiatus. Ibis took to the drawing board to bring this hardtail fun machine up to speed with modern geometry, lighter weight, and the freedom to build it up to fit our personal riding style. So whether we're looking to run a 100mm travel XC-fork and chase podiums or we're someone who is running a burley 140mm travel fork and sees every side hit as an opportunity to add some freeride vibes to our ride, we can build the Ibis DV9 to fit our vision of fun. And because building up a bike shouldn't be any worse than Type-2 fun, the internal cable routing utilizes internal tubes so we're not left swearing at our pickset.

When the DV9 gets spec'd with a short-offset 120mm fork, we see a 66.5-degree head-tube angle that's just slack enough to get rowdy, but not so slack that we lose the razor-sharp handling. The geometry also features a steep seat tube angle to put us in a powerful climbing position right over the pedals and a low standover height allowing us to choose our size based on ride feel rather than inseam length. The frame has plenty of rear wheel clearance giving us the freedom to run burly 2.6-inch wide tires for traction all over the mountain or fast-rolling 2.25-inch race tires for leaving our competition in the dust. Ibis rounds out this incredibly versatile hardtail frame with room for 2 full size water bottles in the front triangle, thick downtube and chainstay protectors, and an adjustable upper chain guide so we're not left with a dropped chain when we drop the hammer. Whether we're looking to make our daily shred a bit rowdier or we're chasing the top of the podium in the local cross-country race series, the Ibis DV9 Mountain Bike Frame is ready to be built up to our exact specifications.

*Due to a high demand in the global supply chain and bike industry since the start of the pandemic, material weight and exact components are subject to change. We are working diligently to keep tech specs updated, and any adjustments will be of equal or better spec level. All in one fun

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

First ride experience: 10 miles/1000ft of climbing; typical Missouri terrain (technical, punchy, lots of limestone and a decent amount of flow); sub 25 lb build with 120 mm front travel. I'm 5'8" (just). This bike is fun! Exactly as was advertised as a bike capable of XC racing at your local circuits (I'm over 40 years old, not talking UCI events), and fun as heck on a trail ride. Climbing is a joy on this bike (especially technical climbs with obstacles). Descending is confident, not as twitchy as something like a pure XC racing machine (Trek Super-caliber) and not as lush as full suspension trail (Specialized Stumpjumper). If you bombing down long, technical hills, it's probably not the best option, the same dimensions that make climbing so great mean the back end tends to come up easily on steeper/rocky descents. I was looking for a lighter bike that could climb well and provide a more compact, race feel when needed but with plenty of room for longer days in the saddle exploring. This is it.
