Way ahead of their time, the engineers at Ibis shocked the mountain bike world with the incarnation of the ultra-wide 941 Wheelset a few years back. Now that the industry has finally caught up, Ibis has doubled down on their dedication to producing the best wide wheels on the market with the introduction of the 942 Logo Carbon 29in Boost Wheelset. Retaining the same carbon construction and stout width as the original 941 Wheelset, the updated 942 produces the same benefits in terms of smooth ride quality and increased tire support.

Following the industry's acceptance of ultra-wide wheels, Ibis set out to improve upon the original 942 with a lower profile design that increases strength, saves weight, and boosts lateral stiffness. The rim's lower 19.5-millimeter section height is better at distributing impact forces through the rim, making the 942 significantly stronger than its 941 predecessor. Ibis claims the reduced height increases strength by a whopping 30 percent and yields a weight savings of 7.5 percent.

The 942 sits at a hearty 35 millimeters across on the inside and a whopping 41 millimeters along the outer, which are the same measurements as the original 942. This means you'll be able to comfortably run higher volume trail tires in the neighborhood of 2.5 inches, as well as plus-sized rubber up to 3.0 inches without a problem. Regular trail tires work as well, with many riders finding good results with standard 2.3 to 2.4-inch rubber.

With such a drastic increase in rim width, you'll notice a dramatic improvement of ride quality and traction, as you can lower the pressure for added bump compliance, as well as gobs of grip over rocks and loose rubble. Ibis recommends running pressures as low as 10 to 18psi with plus-sized tires and something in the range of 18 to 25psi for standard 2.3 to 2.4-inch tires. These are impressively low pressures and something you'd never see with standard wheel and tire combos. One more thing to note, Ibis is using their own hubs on this 942 Wheelset for their reliable operation and responsive 10-degree engagement with the 36-tooth ratchet.

Everyone knows the upgrade that yields the most improvement on any bike is a better set of wheels. The move from aluminum to carbon on an MTB bike is really noticeable. These are solid wheels that have stayed true and seem really well made. Typical of Ibis quality.
