With all the compression Lycra and fluo-on-stealth kit that the discipline entails, road cyclists are used to the sneers and general derision of the uninitiated. Triathletes, on the other hand, are beyond it. Compression socks, single-piece tri-suits, aerodynamic helmets — no kit is taboo, regardless of the strange looks it might get. The race is all that matters, and when every second counts, then HED's tubular H3 GT3 Carbon Wheel is the only obvious answer to the race wheel conundrum, funny looks from non-competitors be damned.
The wheelset's outer ring is a tub-compatible 55mm deep section rim that swells to its widest point at 26.5mm, which is decidedly wider than the regular H3's 19mm. The wider rim feeds seamlessly into three airfoil section spokes, eliminating any transitional ridges between spokes and rim and — when paired with HED's suggested tire diameter of 21-23mm — rim and tire in order to reduce drag resistance from all the yaw angles likely to be encountered during a race.
The inclusion of HED's Stability Control Technology (SCT) also manages the flow of air from the moment it leaves the leading edge of the tire to the moment it either reattaches to the frame at the down tube or exits into the slipstream, regardless of yaw angle. By controlling the manner of reattachment and detachment, the H3 GT3 prevents stalled air in the wheel's wake, which creates pockets of negative pressure and actually pulls back on the wheel.
In the event of crosswinds, SCT works the same magic on lateral forces, providing more predictable handling than true NACA air foil rims with deep dishes and traditional bladed spokes. The GT3 is also finished with an improved brake track for more consistent stopping as you roll into T2.
