If the tech sheet, marketing copy, and glowing reviews from major publications aren't enough to sell you on the plush, efficient ride of HED's Ardennes Plus SL Road Wheelset, then just head to your local two-wheeled hotspot and count the number of times you see that unmistakable branding roll by on everything from carbon race frames to steel touring machines with wheelbases you can measure in meters. This ubiquity is no accident.

Given that it self-styles as Super Light, we'd be remiss not to mention that the Ardennes Plus SL is both light, but not as light as the line-topping Ardennes Black model, which effectively replaced the FR Plus for 2015. But small discrepancies in weight are of little consequence when balanced against the benefits of HED's C2 rim design, which the Plus models take even a step further. Two additional millimeters of width result in even better grip and faster rolling through an improved tire profile.

A wider rim puts more of the tire on the road, and that increased contact patch means more grip, especially while cornering. Better yet, by widening the tire's base, more of the sidewall is oriented vertically, and that means that the tire is better able to deform around irregularities in the road surface. So, you'll roll through them, not over them. And just in case you're looking for the fastest rolling setup around, the Plus SL is compatible with tubeless setups, in addition to traditional clincher tires with tubes.

The Plus SL wheelset still rolls on the Sonic Black hubs also used on the Black Plus wheels. The front hub features the same carbon fiber hub shell and bonded aluminum flanges as the Black Plus, while the rear hub forgoes the carbon fiber shell in favor of a slightly heavier aluminum version. The rear hub has an external grease port, the spokes are Sapim CX rays, which are forged for added stiffness and bladed to reduce aerodynamic drag.

The rims ship with tubeless-ready rim tape (not installed), and HED recommends a rider weight limit of 225 pounds.

Unanswered Question

Will these wheels work on a Cervelo S3 2015? Currently, I am running HED JET 5 express wheels, on which I can use 23s tire size. Will 23s be compatible with the Ardennes Plus SLs?

I would ride these mostly on my long commute on crappy roads but would like to start including a couple of gravel trails. Will run 28-30 tires. Will these hold up to the punishment? I weigh about 195 with pack on. Thanks

Smooth wheel

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I just bought weeks ago, and I just ride one time. And first impression as spokes, wide rim, and wide rim brake. And first impression by riding...I feel the difference as speed go up. It doesn’t need to keep pushing hard for maintaining certain speed, which it was little hard before...the speed was already there with less power of pedaling, and stability is also great and not too stiff as my old wheel which comes with my bike. I intentionally bought normal wheel, not deep wheel. Because my training cycling course has strong wind most of times in winter season and all road is not smooth with mix of steep up and down hill, etc. This wheel is for my regular training ride.
I just little surprised at beginning with wheel clicking sound was bit rounder than I expected. But at end of riding, I almost forgot about it.
P.S. About 4month later, I really happy with this wheel as recreational cyclists. The speed I tried to keep up before was little hard before, but now it’s easily able to maintain by this wheel set. I enjoy gaining more speed than before.

Went from older Marvic open pro wheels to these on one road bike and have Plus CL on my cyclocross. I ride 10+ Thousand miles a year with commuting and long weekend tours. Very nice ride on these wheels, roll is great and very happy with being able to run lower psi but still go fast. I live in Duluth, MN which is built on a big bluff and can say these are also better on hills. Working noticeably less to climb. I have an older pair of Ardennes plus CL wheels I use for cyclocross which are also great. The SL is so much lighter though. Very noticeable wt difference compared to CL. The CLs are much more bomb proof so have there uses. I have 3 older Lemond bikes and about to rebuild one next winter. I plan to ride them for many more years to come. Bought a second pair of this wheelset I like them so much. Disc brakes are taking over top end wheels and afraid in a few years it may become hard to find new clincher rim brake sets with this level of performance. Highly recommended.

Are these hubs silent or do they make a clicking, rat tat tat, or fishing reel sound? If there is a way to know the sound each hub brand or type makes without having the hub in hand, please let me know. Thank you.

Hed's hubs are average in noise level. If noise is a concern for you we could do a wheelbuild with Onyx hubs which are silent!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

    I only use these wheels as my race wheels. They are light and very fast!!! I get better results on crits when i use them. Only thing is that these wheels must be counter balanced by putting extra tightening rings on prsesta valve in order. Using lighter tubes is out of the question because you need to be able to scree whtese rings on to balance them. Aside from that these wheels rock!

    Are the hubs on this wheelset the Sonic 545 hubs with 5 pawls (introduced in 2016). Also is the back hub 11-speed compatible? Thanks.

    I bought a set of these a month ago. Just bought another but not here yet. The wheelset I purchased last month came with shimano 11 speed freebody hub installed. Currently have 9 speed so needed a spacer but great to have 11 already in place for future upgrades.

    The ride quality of your bike will be improve ! The same set of tires that you use will be larger and you will be able to run them with less PSI. My set of Vittoria Corsa G+ have a width of 26,4 mm on my FFWD F4R FCC wheels and they are now at 28,2 mm on my HED ! Super stiff even when i climb out of the saddle. I really recommend these wheels.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

    ... pull the trigger. I went from a bicycle company's proprietary upper-end aluminum rim wheelset (DT Swiss internals for hubs, 19.5mm internal width, bladed spokes, etc.) to these, and I realized immediately I'd been resistance training for the last few years. The HED Ardennes wheels roll so well. If you get these, try dropping a couple teeth in the back on your favorite climb and see what happens. You might be surprised. And although I'd already ridden the wave of wider, the extra width provided by the HED wheels improved on the road feel. I ride the 25 miles home from work once or twice a week. And about 2/3 of the way there's a mile-something climb with a really twisty descent. I never thought I'd be able to lean any farther and go any faster through its sweeping turns. But hey.

    My only gripe is the adequate quick releases/skewers. They're light. But they don't feel that positive when you cinch them down (original generation external cam design). Still, they do what they're supposed to do.

    My rationale for buying at this time was that braking technology is going rapidly to disc across the industry. And the price is pretty bomber for the quality, the dependability, and the tried-and-true factor that goes along with the Ardennes wheelset. So if you're going to ride your rim brakes a while longer, treat yourself to some great wheels.

    Second pair of Ardennes SL, first set still true after may years running on backup road bike. Great snap on acceleration. Rock solid on fast descents.

    Weight does not include skewers and tape. Bare wheels only.

    Which color scheme are these actually? The first picture shows the print on the wheel as black with white outlines, the second picture shows the text in full white?

    Added these to my Ridley Fenix build last fall. There are many features that make this a nice set. The hubs roll smooth,23s look more like 25s, they feel stiff in the turns. Even the graphics are reflective which is really nice. I have about 900 miles on them and the rear wheel had to be sent to a wheel builder to be trued. These wheels have a weight limit of 225lbs. I weigh 200lbs and the combined weight with the bike is still under the recommendation. I will be putting these on my wifes bike who is 70lbs lighter than me. I really wanted these things to work for me but, Hey Mama gets some new wheels.

    Have them mounted with Hutchinson Fusion 3 tubeless tires. First thing right off the bat is how supple the ride is, although much credit has to be given to the lower pressures of the tubeless setup.

    Second is the cornering confidence, being able to lean the bike into a corner as much as the bike's geometry will allow. Awesome for crits! Haven't had any issues with stiffness, no flexing on climbs or sprints. Hubs roll nicely, reliability remains to be seen, only 4K miles on my set.

    Only downsides are they won't climb like Enve 3.4's or hold speed like Reynolds 58 Aero, but these are apples to oranges comparisons.
