C5 Gore-Tex Trail Hooded Jacket

Whether you're hitting the trails in the colder months, or riding the high alpine during summer monsoon season, the weather can be unpredictable so it's a good idea to take a rain jacket along for the ride. This lightweight waterproof jacket is cut specifically for mountain biking, and can be packed down nice and tight to be stowed in your hydration pack or jersey pocket.

The jacket's lightweight nylon construction keeps you from overheating on long climbs, allowing your sweat to wick away quickly while you ride, while slicing through the breeze, so the descent that follows doesn't have to feel so chilly. Since its meant for protection on the bike, the jacket is equipped with an elastic hem that holds it in place when you're on the bars, keeping you covered, and a full-length front zipper that lets you drop heat single-handed when big efforts get your blood pumping. If there's still a drizzle at the end of your ride, reflective accents will help you stay visible as you pedal back home.

I've had this product for several seasons and overall like it a lot. It's does a great job keeping you comfortable in wet and windy conditions, including powerful and cold Santa Ana winds in the mountains around Los Angeles. It stows nicely in a hydration pack and I've been thankful that I brought it along on more than a few occasions when the wind and/or rain picked up unexpectedly. The product has 2 flaws: 1) No pit zips. It's easy to overheat due to a lack of any zippers on the side or back to dump heat. There is just the front zipper, which, when opened, leaves you too exposed to wind and rain. As a result, I wind up overheating when transitioning from descending to climbing. 2) There is a flap on the back side of the zipper that prevents leakage of water or air through the front zipper. Unfortunately, the zipper frequently gets caught in this flap when zipping or unzipping the jacket, which makes putting it on of taking off a chore, especially if you are wearing gloves. It's very finnicky and I'm frankly surprised that Gore didn't think of this problem when designing the product.
