From long-sleeves to short-sleeves in two quick zips.

When it comes to winter, you need all of the protection that you're able to get. But what if that go-to winter jacket could also keep you covered in the fall and spring without causing heat exhaustion? A novel idea, indeed. However, Gore Bike Wear already beat us to it with its Phantom 2.0 SO Jacket. When the weather permits, you're able to wear it as a full jacket, but while in more temperate conditions, the sleeves are removable for the perfect amount of coverage — one jacket for every occasion.

To provide the utmost protection from the elements, Gore constructed its Phantom 2.0 jacket from a sophisticated blend of fabrics. Each region has been thoughtfully considered, and because of this, the Phantom 2.0 is equal parts protection, comfort, and flexible. Starting with the body of the jacket, Gore used its patented WindStopper Soft Shell membrane. As its name suggests, this material makes the jacket 100% windproof. However, the name doesn't allude to its water-resistance or high level of breathability. That's right, with the comfort and weight of a mid-layer, and the protection of a shell, this material keeps you dry from both the rain and your own sweat. And while the material is exceptionally malleable, Gore also incorporated integrated stretch panels into the Phantom 2.0. This permits a full range of movement, whether you're stretched over the hoods or reaching down into the drops.

If that's not enough stretch for you, Gore enabled you to remove the raglan-cut sleeves. But, that would be an extreme measure, as the detachable sleeves primarily add to the jacket's versatility. But with the sleeves removed, the Phantom displays soft, protective short sleeves that guarantee coverage from the elements. Now, you're able to stretch the Phantom 2.0 out over multiple seasons.

Going even further into protective design features, Gore included a zippered underflap at the rear hem to protect you from wheel-spray on wet days. And while this protects you from the weather, Gore also took steps to protect you from the hazards on the road. To do this, the jacket has been given reflective elements throughout to increase your visibility in low-light conditions.

To keep the Phantom from shifting, Gore included wear-resistant, elastic bindings on the sleeve hems and bottom hem. This particularly comes in handy when the jacket's three slanted rear pockets are loaded with all of your ride essentials.

The Gore Bike Wear Phantom 2.0 SO Women's Jacket is available in six sizes from X-Small to XX-Large and in the colors Black/white, Neon Yellow/black, Rich Red/white, Waterfall Blue/rich red, and White/black.

  • A jacket that converts to a jersey depending on the weather
  • Windstopper membrane blocks wind, repels water, and breathes
  • Sleeves zip off when the rain lets up and the sun comes out
  • Rear hem extends to shield against road spray
  • 3 rear pockets hold ride essentials and zipped-off sleeves
  • Reflective details help keep you visible till the skies do clear
  • Gore Bike Wear brings its membrane expertise to bear on inclement-weather cycling

What is the ideal temperature range for this jacket? I tend to get cold quick and am looking to cover that need.

Hey there Laurie, most jackets are not rated for a temperature because there are so many factors involved. I can say however that this jacket is not insulated. As such, it will block the elements well, but will not provide much, if any heat retention. I would not depend on this jacket as a means of getting warm when you are cold, just blocking out the elements that make you colder. If you are able to use it over a fleece or insulating later, they should work well together though!

Zipper Broken

The jacket is a perfect fit but the zipper was starting to break before I even had a chance to wear it. I plan on purchasing another jacket and hopefully the zipper will work.

    Great Jacket!

    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Medium

I read the reviews and ordered a size up. Fits great and I love the fact that the sleeves zip off to short sleeves rather than sleeveless. Very very comfortable!

    Product not what is says?

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I ordered this Phantom 2.0 SO in a small and order the Phantom 2.0 windstopper in an XS together. two different products on your site. The phantom 2.0 SO is exactly like the 2.0 windstopper as far as look. (The 2.0 SO is not the same as the one pictured or described on the website. there is not an extra wheel spray flap) Even though the 2.0 SO I ordered was a size small, it actually ran smaller than the 2.0 windstopper in XS. As most everyone states in reviews, the sleeves are tighter. but the short sleeves on the inside were wider than the 2.0 windstopper. I am 5'4 and 107 lbs. The rest of the fit between the two was almost identical so I went with the XS 2.0 Windstopper so I would have room for another long sleeve jersey under it.

    Great 3-season jacket!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: XL

I have worn this jacket about five times now on mountain bike rides in the low to mid-30s. With one base layer underneath, I have found the jacket to be very comfortable in those temps (though granted I have been using it in the woods at lower speeds vs. on the road with more wind). I also loved zipping the sleeves off when I was overheated and just having the base layer exposed on my arms. I got the "jazzy pink/magenta" color to make sure I had something bright because I often ride where hunting is allowed, and the jazzy pink is a little darker than it looks in the pictures (in a good way). Bright, but not neon. The magenta trim on the arms and middle of the back is pepto-bismol pink and not nearly as warm/windproof as the primary fabric. I have not tested the jacket yet in the rain. It does run a little small, especially when considering you want to make sure you have room for a base layer. My measurements are 37-29-43, and the XL fit perfectly. Nice length in the back. The front is shorter, as others have commented, but covers everything, and I always have a base layer tucked into tights anyway.

This item is exactly what I would have needed for colder riding days. The cut runs a bit small. I am a comfortable Large @ 5'7", 160# with an athletic build...I couldn't even fit my arms in the sleeves. I was hoping to wear this with a base layer or two underneath! Not going to happen. I ordered an XL will see how that works out

    Great jacket..WAY TOO SMALL

    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Large & XL

I am 5' 4" 145# size 8 I wear medium or large top (size 10 maybe 12). I ordered a large and XL jacket. The large looked like a size small. The XL..could not fit on my arms. Very disappointed since I don't consider myself a large female. Had one of the jackets fit, I know I would have loved it. Returning both.

    Sizing issue

    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: large

This is a beautiful jacket, I love the color and the weight - I ordered a large and it was skin tight. I normally wear medium but I thought I would order up so I could wear warm jerseys under the jacket. I am 135 lb and 5'4". You must have very thin arms to wear this jacket. Sadly I had to return it.

I wanted to like this jersey............

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

The fit was perfect and I loved the colors but the zippers were uncomfortable around my shoulders. I couldn't figure out the need for a short sleeved windstopper when the sleeves are off, I wish it was a plain long sleeved jersey

    great quality, too small

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I own 3 other Gore softshell jackets in other colors, in medium size, and all fit perfectly. I've returned this one and ordered a large. Even the large was a wee bit too snug, so also reluctantly returned.

    Perfect Cool Weather Gear

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: medium

Purchased this for my wife, she is 5'6" 120" size medium, fits perfect. It is her go to early morning cool weather top. When the weather warms, the arms come off and she has a great top with short sleeves. Keeps the wind off and fits like a glove.

    Flexible cycling garment

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

Have it in red, a nice true red. Love the flexibility of the garment with the removable sleeves as Seattle weather transitions from winter to spring. I also use as a warm vest with arm warmers. I'm 5'5" and 115 llbs and wear a small. Fits close but not tight

    Great jacket

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

This was my 3rd or 4th attempt at finding the just-right jacket for this ridiculously rainy California winter. It’s great for 40-50 degreeish rain rides, and the popping color options help keep you visible to cars. This jacket offers much better breathability than my hardshell rain jacket, which makes it nice to wear on hard efforts. I love that I can remove the sleeves if the rain lets up and/or I get too hot. I did size up, but I knew I’d be wearing another jersey underneath and I do have slightly larger shoulders than the average lady. If you’re buying it to wear as a jacket I’d recommend sizing up. If you’re using it as a long sleeve jersey with a base layer it probably fits true-to-size. I was a bit nervous about rain seeping in around the removable sleeve zippers, but I haven’t had a single issue there. Overall it’s a very well made jacket. and great for its intended use.

    FIlls a Need

    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: medium

This jacket has just the heft for a chilly 45 degree day with a long sleeve jersey under it. Alternately, you could layer a single wool layer or add a jersey over that layer to adapt to a chillier 40. Love that the sleeves zip off but I've not used that feature. Lovely color with awesome visibility.

Wish I could keep it, but...

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: True to size

I wanted a particular color unavailable in XS, but I read that it runs small so I sized up. Unfortunately it was way too big for me. Baggy around the middle and very long sleeves, and XS isn't available in a color I want. But the size S fit my husband (6' 150lbs.) so well except for the shoulders that I got him one for Christmas, in size M. It's an excellent garment and I wish it was available in my size in a color I like, and I'd recommend it.

Update: I needed something for a rain ride, and this was the most waterproof jacket I had. Really glad I hadn't returned it yet. Fits a bit better with a base layer, and will be worth having it tailored. Good wind resistance even with the loose fit, and it kept the water out riding into a steady rainy headwind.

    Perfect Fit!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

Purchased in Black/White! As I have not worn this out in the cold/wind, I cannot comment on how well it keeps your warm in low temps. However, I can comment on the fit as I have worn it already a few times during cool morning rides. I've seen a lot of complaints about this item being too small, which I apologize, but is inaccurate. The description clearly states "Form Fit", so I'm not quite sure why so many people are surprised when they get this in the mail and it's tight. As far as the concern about the item being "too short" in the front, this again is because this is a "Form Fit" jacket. When you are bending over into the horns/drops (depending on what you're riding), you don't need a ton of fabric bunching in the belly area. If you've experienced this bunching sensation in the past, you know it potentially can ruin your whole ride. Know that if you do not like things fitting "Form Fit", you are going to want to order a size or two larger than you normally would. I am 175 lbs and 5'5" and ordered a large, and found this "Form Fit" perfect for me. If I wanted it to be baggier (which I don't, because I want to be as aerodynamic as possible and avoid yucky bunching), then I would have ordered the XL or XXL. I love having the zip off sleeve option. Sometimes mid ride it just gets a little too steamy and you need to strip a little off. The sleeves come off and reattach very easy, and can be stored in the back pockets easily when not in use. Bottom line, if you're looking for versatility at a reasonable price, you'll hit the jackpot with this one. I hope I've been helpful to clear up some sizing concerns! I know finding the perfect gear can be super frustrating sometimes, but just remember to check out the item descriptions! Happy cycling! :)

Thanks for the awesome review and welcome to the Backcountry Community!

UPDATE: I was so pleased with this jacket, I had to buy another one. Unfortunately the color (Waterfall Blue/Rich Red) that I wanted was only available in an XL, so I settled for that. I will say that I don't feel the fit is any different than my size L Black/White one I originally wrote my review for. However, I do find my new XL one to be slightly longer in the front and back compared to my size L one. Just wanted to add that tidbit for those who are still struggling with sizing on this one!

Thanks for the reminder on "form fit" and happy cycling!

Will this jacket stow into a jersey pocket?

It might if you stuff it in. The sleeves are removeable. So you could put sleeve in one pocket, vest in another

My answer is no. I've tested it out, and it just doesn't work. However, you might want to note the sleeves on this zip off, and the sleeves WILL fit in the back jersey pocket. I've done this many times already, going from jacket to jersey within seconds :)

    Unanswered Question

Will this jacket stow into a jersey pocket?

A change of design... that doesn't fit m

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I have a very old and loved and well-worn Gore windstopper jacket. Bought this one to get the benefits of updated materials and design. Unfortunately returning it today because the arms on the new jacket are way too snug for comfort. It doesn't fit like the previous M size. Also, don't really like the elastic at the bottom of the jacket because, being a curvy girl (simply by being a girl, I'm not big)... that elastic will cause the jacket to creep up. Sad to say, back it goes. For those of you with slim limbs - I have to say I love the idea of design of the removable sleeves. Not knocking it on the stars... might be just right for you.
