One jacket rules them all.

Cycling jackets are a big investment, both in terms of economics and preference. If you've a fall-weight jacket that fits you perfectly, then it's a minor tragedy when you have to switch to your winter-weight jacket that hangs loosely or simply doesn't fit well. After all, in cold-weather riding, comfort is already at a premium, so it's a shame to sacrifice fit for function. The Gore Bike Wear Phantom 2.0 SO Jacket's removable sleeves address both of these concerns, alternating between a short-sleeve Windstopper top for fall and spring conditions and a long-sleeve jacket when winter rolls in—essentially giving you two jackets that fit the same way for the price of one.

The Phantom 2.0 features Gore's venerable Windstopper Soft Shell fabric. The Soft Shell construction is a touch heavier than Gore's similar Active Shell fabric, owing to a difference in lining. Active Shell uses a thin, mesh-like scrim for wind protection without adding undue warmth and weight while the Soft Shell incorporates a plush, soft lining that's thicker for insulation in cold weather while still providing the wind-resistance for which Windstopper is named. Wind-resistance is expressed in terms of CFM, which determines permeability by measuring the volume of air that can pass through a given material in one minute. Since all fabrics branded with the Windstopper stop sign logo either meet or exceed the windproof rating of 1.0 CFM, they are all literally windproof.

Windstopper Soft Shell is also water-resistant and wicks moisture away from your skin, so you're protected from moisture both inside and out. Though Windstopper is stretchy, it does sacrifice some give in pursuit of elemental protection, so Gore incorporates stretch panels in the Phantom 2.0. This permits a full range of movement, whether you're stretched over the hoods or reaching down into the drops.

We love Windstopper fabric, but it's hardly a rarity in cycling clothing these days. What really sets the Phantom 2.0 apart from the legion of jackets using similar materials are the sleeves. With a zip-zip the raglan sleeves come off, exposing short, soft sleeves and converting the Phantom to a jacket that's appropriate for fall or spring. Going even further into protective design features, Gore included a zippered underflap at the rear hem to protect you from wheel-spray on wet days. Elastic bindings on the cuffs and hem keep the jacket in place, and three rear pockets provide enough storage for all your essentials plus the sleeves if conditions require you to remove them mid-ride. Reflective elements on all sides of the jacket increase help keep you visible in low-light conditions.

The Gore Bike Wear Phantom 2.0 SO Jacket is available in five sizes ranging from Small to X-Large in the colors Black/red, Brilliant Blue/fresh green, Fresh Green/black, Neon Yellow/black, Red/black, and Ruby Red/red.

  • A convertible cycling jacket to take the sting out of rainy days
  • Windstopper blocks wind, repels water, and breathes
  • Sleeves zip off when the rain lets up and the sun comes out
  • Rear hem extends to fend off rooster tails
  • 3 rear pockets hold ride essentials and sleeves
  • Reflective details help keep you visible until the skies do clear
  • Gore Bike Wear's membranes have revolutionized cycling

The best piece I have in my collection

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I love this jacket. I use it in a wide variety of conditions because it is so versatile. This is the first jacket I recommend to anyone. I use it between 20-55 degrees, depending what I have on underneath.
With a good baselayer, this jacket will keep me warm into the 20s.

Now, it doesn't have the tightest race cut- but its far from a sloppy fit. Its great for road or mountain.

Removable sleeves act as a pit-zip when you want a little more ventilation, or you can fully remove your sleeves if you have a long ride that warms up. Or....even for canyon riding, put the sleeves on coming down.

The price is just right, the Windstopper blocks the wind in its tracks, and the removable sleeves all add up to make this a winner.

Only worn this a few times on some abnormally cold days this past winter in Southern California, and it's kept me more than warm enough every time!

i am 6 feet tall and weigh 215 lbs. i like room for a base layer if needed. what size do you suggest I order? thanks.

Hey Josh - Based on your measurements I think XL would be the best fit for you in this Phantom 2.0 SO Jacket. Feel free to contact me directly with any additional questions.

So warm I was overheating!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

Great jacket for the price. WindStopper is no joke. I rode in 45 degrees weather and it was a bit warmer than I expected after few minutes of riding. Fits true to size. I'm 5'11' 161lbs, ordered an M and it fits great.

What a steal!

I got mine on sale. I was a bit leary as I had not used Gore Bike Wear all that much. This jacket has entirely caused me to convert my kit over to Gore (slowly). No, it isn't "Aero", but it gets the job done. Keeps me warm with a base layer beneath it down into the low 20s - teens. Cannot recommend this enough.

I have the Neon Yellow/Black color, and boy does it pop. I feel very safe using this on my cold winter road rides.

Great review, thank you! I personally have two on these in the women's version, but was recently asked by my husband to research a jacket for him. Based on your review, I am making this jacket an option.
