Shifting paradigms.

When Gore released its first Gore-Tex jacket, the Giro, three decades ago, it revolutionized wet-weather cycling apparel by pairing breathability with weather-blocking prowess. Although it came with a pretty price tag, this jacket gave us a collective hope that the days of sweating bullets in the steamy microclimate of thick plastic rain capes could soon be in our rear view mirror. The years between have not disappointed, ushering in a plethora of reasonably breathable, weather-resistant cycling jackets to keep our training on track when the weather turns south. However, Gore didn't become a legend in the outdoor industry by settling for "reasonable," and its engineers have been furiously at work creating the new Gore Bike Wear One 1985 GTX Shakedry Men's Jacket. Arriving amidst a swirl of rumors that it will change our experience of exercising in inclement weather, this jacket is Gore's attempt to push the industry into a new paradigm of fabric technology. Again.

Touted as the lightest and most breathable Gore-Tex product ever created, the secret to this jacket lies in its Shakedry fabric technology. Most weather-proof fabrics employ a porous-yet-weather-blocking inner membrane protectively sandwiched between a liner and DWR-treated face fabric, which is a functional if not necessarily lightweight way to achieve the desired level of weather protection. As the DWR treatment eventually wears off, you're left in the rain with a water-soaked outer layer that restricts breathability and brings back visions of those dreaded plastic rain capes.

Shakedry, conversely, lands as a lightweight, paper thin, single-layer fabric that's highly breathable and durably wind- and water-repellant. In fact, Shakedry lives up to its billing because it literally shakes dry. Whether you're riding out from under the storm into welcoming sun or hungrily clopping into your favorite café, a quick shake expels water beads from the surface, freeing you from the inconvenience of cold, damp jersey pockets and dangerously slippery tableside puddles.

Shakedry mimics the tactile experience of grasping a swatch of slightly crinkly, lightweight paper. It's not brittle by any means, but we're inclined to make extra note of Gore's recommendation that this jacket be reserved for road applications. Shifting pack straps, errant branches, air born gravel, and the general abuse garments see off the pavement hold ample potential to wreak havoc on the minimalistic fabric's integrity.

When used in its preferred environment, Shakedry's tech shines brightly with a silky, dark anthracite sheen that adds a classy aesthetic to otherwise monochrome kit. Looks aside, it also assures that, on days when that final interval set sees you hammering through a torrential downpour sweeping across the exposed levee road, you'll still arrive under the protective awning of the café to enjoy post-ride rewards in warm, dry comfort. In fact, Gore even goes to the extent of promising that this fabric is GUARANTEED TO KEEP YOU DRY (capitalization Gore's, but we reproduce that textual choice to stress the claim's enormity)—although it makes no promises about helping your tires manage the gauntlet of rain-slicked street paint designating bike lanes and crosswalks encountered along the way.

The single-layer construction that makes the GTX Shakedry jacket so light also makes it exceptionally packable, with Gore claiming that it will fit easily into any jersey pocket. If you've ever tried to fit a traditional three-layer membrane jersey or jacket into a pocket, you'll understand our excitement at the ability to roll out under looming clouds with this amount of protection tucked neatly along for the ride in case we can't quite race the storm home. (Which, to be fair, we're rarely able to do.) The jacket's zippered rear stow pocket also doubles as a carrying pouch, so you can tuck it away without worries of flyaway fabric or tangled gel packets as you sift through your jersey pockets for essentials on the fly.

The GTX Shakedry Jacket's fit is classically Gore through and through, with a relaxed profile that leaves ample room for layering without any worries of restricted motion as you hunker down in the drops, shifting your weight to wrestle the bike through howling crosswinds. As always, Gore pays attention to every detail for an impeccably constructed final product. Not satisfied with the one-size-fits-all, restrictive fit of zipped up collars, Gore utilizes hook-and-loop strips for a fully customizable collar fit that lets you dial in the perfect balance of protection and comfort.

As a final touch—and something we would love to see on every jacket of this caliber—Gore adds a two-way zipper that allows quick access to jersey pockets without having to fully unzip. This may sound like a small detail, but fumbling to get a zipper started in the rain just because you wanted to check your snack supply levels is an annoying task, and a two-way zipper means you'll never have to worry about it again. Unzipping from the bottom while the top stays secure also allows for targeted ventilation that nevertheless protects your shoulders, chest, and back from rain fall.
