Twice as capable as before.
Remember when action cams used to capture jittery, nausea-inducing footage reminiscent of your dad's old camera from back in the VHS days? Thankfully, those days are long gone with the introduction of the GoPro Hero 6 Black. When GoPro first announced its launch of the newest Hero 6 Black, it didn't seem like the new offering would offer a drastic change in performance, since the previous Hero 5 Black basically set the standard for capturing action sports in mind-blowing clarity, especially with its higher frame rates to smooth out the playback. Well, it turns out the differences are drastic.
The Hero 6 Black does away with the previous camera's Ambarella processor, opting for a GP1 processor that packs twice the performance for even smoother playback of HD formats, ranging from 4k at 60fps on the high end, to 1080p at 240 fps on the lower end. Higher frame rates are essential to achieving the silky-smooth playback of fast-paced action sports, which are notorious for being a jittery, caffeine-addled affair when viewed at lower frame rates. And to help you gain pro-quality footage, GoPro uses its most advanced video stabilization ever, so you can say goodbye to unwanted shakes and reap the rewards of silky-smooth playback.
Other upgrades include the ability to capture HDR photos, plus the addition of 5 GHz Wi-Fi for uploading footage three times faster than the previous Hero 5 Black. For easier editing, you'll find GoPro's Quik Stories feature, which automatically cuts out the boring stuff and keeps the very best footage. Suddenly, the biggest pain of creating movies (i.e. editing video) is a painless affair. Moreover, you'll be pleased to hear the Hero 6 Black retains many of the previous version's best features, including the impressive touchscreen display, advanced wind noise reduction, voice control capabilities, and time-lapse photography.
