Description

Pro association.

Few helmet profiles are as closely associated with certain teams and organizations as Giro's Synthe. The Synthe MIPS Limited Edition Helmet is a celebration of those associations, and it spans the cycling world from fixie to 11-speed electronic, depending on the colorway. Regardless of what's on the outside, though, it's what's inside that counts. Specifically, the Multi-Directional Impact Protection System (MIPS) basket, which adds some 21st century tech to a sport whose passion often derives from the romance of its 18th century beginnings.

The big draw with MIPS is its ability to diffuse oblique impact force in the event of certain crashes. MIPS consists primarily of a strategically anchored, thin liner on the inside of the helmet that looks exceptionally simple but serves a rather complex purpose. That little liner is designed to move independently of the helmet shell to essentially redirect impacts that standard, non-MIPS helmets have to address head-on.

On the outside, the Synthe retains all the awesome features that made its non-MIPS predecessor so well-loved in the peloton and the local circuit. Wind tunnel testing shows that it's more aerodynamic than the ultralight Aeon, while giant vents and Aero Mesh Panels funnel air across your dome for a massive cooling effect—a rare combination of fast and comfy.

Giro uses Featherweight Webbing straps with a Slimline buckle to hold the Synthe MIPS firmly in place without any of the pesky irritation or distractions that can plague thicker strapped helmets with bulky closure systems. The Roc Loc Air fit system features two-way fit tuning that's easily adjustable on the fly and is ponytail-compatible, making this helmet extra convenient for those of us with long hair. Giro even integrates eyewear docking ports into the Aero Mesh Panels for safe storage of your favorite sunglasses when the clouds come out to play.

  • A pro-tier helmet in equally pro colorways
  • MIPS basket diffuses certain impact forces
  • In-Mold construction increases impact resistance
  • Adjustable fit cradle accommodates ponytails
  • Generous ventilation so "aero" doesn't mean stifling
  • An optics perch holds glasses on climbs, because suffering in style is cycling at its finest

Great Fitting lid

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I'm really happy with this helmet. The fit is excellent. The MIPS made it feel a little wobbly at first but after a few rides, I became used to it and no longer notice it. The ventilation is good, but the RocLoc Air really sets this apart from all other helmet I've used over the years including other Giro, Bell and Specialized. The only negative thing i could throw in it the continuous brow pad means all the sweat channels to the lowest point and drips down your face. This is the norm, but the Spec Propero 2 I had used segmented pad along the brow, which dispersed sweat better.

Great fitting, light and comfortable

  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

Wanted a MIPS upgrade at a great price.Moved on from the regular Synthe and have used the new helmet daily for about 2 weeks. I'm a longtime Giro wearer so the fit is similar to all Giro helmets in medium (snug). Newer light weight straps easy to adjust even during the ride and MIPS basket/Roc Loc also seem more comfortable and secure.

Runs small.

Good helmet. Quieter than my Giro Aeon but does run small. I think it's due to the MIPS inside the helmet. I wear a M Giro Aeon and M in the Synthe is tight. Size up and you will be happy.

Same. Good helmet that fits well and has great ventilation.

buy one size larger

i have multiple giro helmets. some reason the synthe is tighter in the front even when loosened all the way. after 1 hr on the bike it contracts the frontal part of the head causing headaches. i like the aero and the vents but for long rides 2-3 hrs in the saddle, i wouldn't wear it.

A+ comfort

No exaggeration - this helmet is fantastically comfortable. No hot spots detected.

Is the Katusha/BMC/Mash on the sides a decal or paint?

In the case of BMC, they are decals - one for each letter, and on both sides of the helmet. But they seem beefy and have a clearcoat cover. They are also not in a high-touch area. The helmet looks sharp and is a good deal at nearly half off.
