Item # GIR00DG

Big lines.

If you've got a weekend in the desert and some rowdy tricks you're itching to try, don't cut corners on your lid. Giro's brand new Switchblade MIPS Helmet encourages you and your DH monster to get rowdy and send it when you're out on slickrock, but it also backs you up with full face coverage, a removable chin guard, and the added protection of MIPS to help you stay safe when you crash hard.

Not every weekend involves staring down do-or-die lines, which is why Giro made the Switchblade's chinbar removable. Snap it off quickly before you head out on a mellower trail ride and enjoy added ventilation from Giro's Wind Tunnel design, included specifically to provide as much airflow as possible on hot, sunny climbs. Giro's tried-and-true Roc Loc Air fit system makes an appearance on the Switchblade as well, but it comes tweaked to DH standards with a bumper protecting the dial from being unintentionally moved when it comes into contact with your pack or body armor.

It's hard to believe that MIPS was a little-known technology just a few years ago, as the thin inner basket has become a ubiquitous option in the world of helmets. Giro doesn't mess around with the Switchblade, including the rotating inner liner to absorb the brain-damaging rotational energy created in certain crashes without compromising the helmet's lightness. Whether you've got the chinbar on or not, the Switchblade exceeds safety standards from all major governing bodies. If you're taking a break from POV coverage on a training ride, swap the visor with the integrated mount for the other visor without it; Giro ships the Switchblade with two separate visors to cut down on the risk of unused mounts adding weight and causing injury in crashes.

  • Sit back and send it with this full-face helmet as backup
  • Removable chinbar adds extra protection on big lines
  • MIPS protection limits brain-damaging forces in some crashes
  • Two visors let you ride with or without a camera mount
  • 20 vents plus Wind Tunnel ventilation keep the air moving
  • Odor-resistant padding keeps things comfortable

This helmet saved my life

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The title is no exaggeration. I took a bad spill that landed me in the hospital for 5 weeks with a C-5 spinal injury, but my brain had no injuries whatsoever. No concussion. Nothing. Absolutely worth every penny spent on it. The helmet did the best job I could ask for.

Great Helmet

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Great helmet, great peace of mind, comfortable, and I love the fact that you can remove and reattach the face guard quickly out on the trail.

Unanswered Question

I have a 59 cm head diameter, what size I’d buy L or M?

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

so i bought this helmet for a versatile solution to remain cool while climbing but have the protection for downhill and its done exactly that for me. I got a large but i also have dreads so a lot of hair dosent fit in a small helmet :p but im very pleased with the way it fits and breaths. its also super easy to take the chin guard on and off. This helmet is killer and i would recommend it to anyone.

Great lid

This helmet is pretty awesome. I wanted something that was going to give me a little more protection when I was riding the bike park or doing a shuttle lap where speeds get a little higher. I really like the ability to take the chin bar off for some ventilation and then I can snap it back in place without removing the helmet.

Great Versatile Helmet

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Comfortable all-around and very reasonable weight for a full face. Used primarily at the bike park but removable chin guard worked great for a little bit of pedaling here and there or when hot out. Saved my face and held up great after a few crashes.

Durable and Lightweight!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Purchased this helmet as a gift for my brother and he loves it!:
"At first, I was a little bit hesitant about this helmet due to its bulky looking appearance. However, upon trying this helmet on, I was surprised how lightweight and sleek it actually was. It is a great all around helmet for use on those downhill days at the resort, or better yet, pop off the front face in a few seconds and use it for uphill/cruising. As far as durability goes… I have already taken a couple of good noggin shots with it. Only a few scratches as expected but no dents or cracks. Overall, this helmet has a fantastic fit and the versatility is what makes it unbeatable for the price."

Great Helmet

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Mainly use for just down hill but was light enough for all day climbing with plenty of ventilation when climbing and downhill. Love the mount for the GoPro and interchangeable visors. Plenty of room with full size goggles and the adjustability of the straps made it feel really secure to my head. I would recommend if between sizes opt for the larger size.

Love this hemet

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great technology idea. i wear the full face for downhill, but when riding cross country i can detach the jaw guard and put it in my pack. easy to attach. good visibility even with the full face. it isn't oppressive like my my motocross helmet that i am dying to pull off. one complaint is that it is a little snug on my cheeks when putting it on, like a motocross helmet. not sure it needs to be that snug.

Switchblade saved my dome

I'll admit it does look a bit funny but I don't care because wearing this helmet vs a normal half shell probably saved my life a few weeks ago. I didn't have the chin guard attached and fell pretty hard and hit the side of my head on a rock at about 10-15 mph. Put a dent in the helmet and it cracked the foam but I was fine. If I had a normal half shell on I don't know if I would be writing this. You have one dome, protect it well. Just ordered my second one. Get a good helmet people. Thx BC.

    a lot of helmet

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I have had the Bell Super 2r for the past few years and love that i'm able to wear it as a regular skid lid and then add the chin bar for full face protection. I was excited to give the new and improved Switchblade a chance. The thing that may not be clear from photos is that the sides of the helmet COVER YOUR EARS. It's not your traditional mtb helmet when the chin guard is removed. So when I say "a lot of helmet", what I mean is that you still have a LOT of protection when it's disassembled which, for some like myself, will defeat the whole purpose of having a half-and-half helmet. I imagine there are some people who will still love the added over-the-ear protection.

    Very versatile helmet

I'm new to mountain biking this year. I've been using this helmet all summer, for both downhill and everyday mountain biking. After a dozen or so big rides, I've decided I would probably prefer to have a lighter helmet for everyday riding. For downhill, this is great! As such, I probably would not opt for the removable chin guard next time and just get two helmets instead. However, it did save me a bit of money to just get the one helmet and I feel more protected with more helmet coverage on my skull. The removable chin guard is super easy to take on and off, no complaints there. However, the Bell Super 3R did feel more secure. I have a relatively large head, which required the XL in this model and also precluded my purchase of the Bell Super 3R because I couldn't find an XL from them in that model. The XL fits well thanks to the adjustable wheel on the back and the strap under the neck. It also fits well with both sunglasses and Smith goggles. The colors are bright and unusual, which I like, but may not be for everyone.

    Very versatile helmet

Update: I used this helmet all season, which for me ended in September when I was riding Tsunami at Deer Valley and landed a jump poorly and took a hard fall. Thanks to this helmet, I was saved from dealing with head trauma on top of a collarbone surgery. The plastic on the outside of the helmet cracked all the way through along ~2" stretch and will need to be replaced, which I plan to do on the current sale price. FYI, Giro offers a 30% off coupon code to replace broken helmets if you contact their customer service group. Updating my user rating from 4- to 5-stars.

I finally got a full face helmet and so far this seems to be the perfect one! It applies just the right amount of pressure on my cheeks and is easily adjusted, making for a very solid fit. I would have given it 5 stars, but I've found that the removable chin piece isn't very practical. Without it, the helmet is an awkward fit and looks funky. Next time I'll go with a non-detachable and use my normal helmet for trail rides, and only use the full face for downhill rides.

      Works Perfectly!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a comfortable, light weight, breathable full face helmet. If allows a lot of air flow, which is great on a full face helmet. The front is a little tricky to take on and off. I would recommend watching the youtube videos to see how the recommend to do it. It works best to adjust it while you are wearing it. Seems like it would have been a good idea to make it simpler when it is not on. It is nice to know you have a versatile helmet that can do it all. I highly recommend this helmet!

      Great Helmet!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is a fantastic option for mountain biking! I got this helmet for my 2 sons who ride aggressively. My oldest son had crashed with the older version of the switchblade and his head was the only part not hurt, he was so excited with his new bike that he started riding before putting on his pads, gloves and quickly launched off a jump and wiped out in the gravel. Thankfully no serious problems just some stitches etc. But the older switchblade worked great and I needed to replace it. He loves this one now even more. The colors are great too. The visor flips up out of the way for goggle storage and that is perfect. Get this helmet...

      pretty cool helmet

best helmet in the game with a removable chin bar, I am a full face helmet guy all the way and really hate open face when I am actually riding, having the ability to keep the open face for climbing and pup the chin bar off to take a few huge breaths is awesome. runs a bit larger than other brand helmets but they only do s/m/l rather than xs-xxl.

        switch hitter

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Let me start off by saying I really like Giro helmets. For skiing and cycling there fit and quality have been great and withstood the tests of time. The Switchblade is a bit of an odd ball for me, I like the concept but part of me thinks if you can just wear a regular fullface or an open face trail helmet. Getting the helmet over your ears is a very tight fit, unless you spread out the shell by pulling on the chin straps. In my opinion the chinbar is angled too far down exposing a large portion of my face. If I were to take a bad digger I fell like the chin bar would not protect my face and simply deflect out of the way. Adjustment on the back of the helmet works pretty well to tighten/loosen the padding. I think for some select riders this helmet is a great option especially if you want to have just one helmet in the quiver to go along with your one AM bike. If you are a rider who has a quiver of trail bikes, AM, DH and DJ i'd say just get a dedicated trail helmet and a dedicated fullface.

Nice Helmet, Not Best Fit for Me

        • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

The overall quality and tech of this helmet appears very high but I couldn't get the right fit. I tried both a medium and a large at 59 cm / 23.25 inches, which is right on the line. I have a wider jaw and longer face which made the medium a bit too snug on the cheeks (and chinbar too high) despite the actual head fit feeling OK. The large was workable but I had to tighten down the adjuster almost all the way and it felt pretty big. The chin bar system seems pretty well designed if you want to go removable. I had been deciding between this and the Fox Proframe and I will end up going with Fox as my fit was better when I tried it on (L) and the design was killer. I did not need the removable chinbar of the Switchblade but thought it was cool to explore anyway.

        All mountain helmet

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I was looking for a helmet that would come up with me on the climb up and be good for going down some gnarly trails and I found this. I have pretty much gotten rid of my old helmet and strictly use this. It comes with me on park days and trail rides. It does get hot climbing up, but not too bad. It makes me feel more comfortable going downhill and looks great. It is easy to use and I would definitely recommend it to the gnarlier trail riders out there (and downhillers).

Full face when you want it!!!

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Throw the chin guard in your backpack and head up the mountain, then you're not suffocating yourself when you're climbing up to the top of the peaks.
Once you get to the top slap your chin guard on and you have full faced protection for the decent.
This helmet is lightweight and breaths very well via the many vents.
I wouldn't trade this helmet for any other helmet. It's awesome.
