Roll and walk in the same kicks.

Having a solid connection to the pedals is important, but so is being comfortable and supported when it comes time to hop off the bike. This is where Giro's Republic Shoes jump in, as they pull double duty by smoothly transitioning from the bike to the street with ease. In other words, the days of packing a second set of shoes in your bag are over.

Similar to other cycling shoes in Giro's line, the Republics were made with a perforated microfiber upper for both comfort and breathability. Giro's molded EVA footbed was also added, giving you a medium level of arch support within the shoe. A lace closure adds a bit of street style to the mix, and the DuPont nylon outsole — with 2-bolt cleat mount — provides a stiff platform for efficient pedaling.

Walking pads were integrated into the outsole, which provide the necessary traction for comfortably, and safely, moving around once you've arrived by two wheels.

The Giro Republic Shoes are available in whole and half sizes 39.0 to 48.0 and in the colors Black/grey, Lead/gum, and White/black.

  • Stiff, nylon cycling sole with tread pads for walkability
  • Lace-up closure provides seven points of contact for unparalleled fit
  • Breathable microfiber upper won't suffocate feet on long trips

Nice looking set of commuters

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I got these to make my 10-mile daily commute a little smoother. The main sell was the look—something that would feel equally natural with bike shorts or jeans. They look great with both and perform very well, so I'm happy. Here are a few first impressions:

• The rubber-lined bottoms are pretty quiet in most situations, so I don't have to worry about clacking around on my way to my desk at work. They do make a little bit of noise on our concrete floors.

• I use these with the Shimano A530 pedals, and the clipping-in is fluid and quiet. The rubber-lined bottoms work on the platform side, but barely; I slip around a lot. If you want a shoe where you can ride comfortably on the platform side, maybe consider the Rumble model?

• As other reviewers have mentioned, you can hang out in these shoes and it isn't terrible. They are certainly fine to sit or stand in, though I probably wouldn't want to walk very far.

Stylin Kicks

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

These shoes fit great! The toe box is a little bigger than you find on the Empire version of this shoe, so if you need a little more volume, these are your friend. I love the lace up design, they are light and very walkable. I use these as my commuting shoes and love that they look a little more normal, plus they aren't too bad to walk in.
I am typically a US size 9 and have always worn size 43 in brands like Specialized, Shimano and Sidi. I tried the Giro suggested size 42 and the 42.5 and both felt a little small so I stuck with my normal size 43 and have been happy with the fit.

Bonus Shoes

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

These shoes are great for my commute but aren't quite stiff enough for the mountain bike. They do look good though!

Very loose toe box

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 44

There are so many things that are attractive about this shoe. I really wanted them to work, but they just don't . For my size foot, there was just TOO much room where the toes are. It was cavernous. I tried sizing down and tying the shoes as tight as possible.
How can you really get an efficient pedal up stroke if your foot is swimming around?
Also, the construction of the shoe just feels rubbery and cheap in general.
I wish someone made a shoe that we could walk around in that wasnt a mountain bike shoe- right? Big untapped market I think for us Weekend warriors who want to ride 40 miles for a cup of coffee.

Stylish and perfect fitment

Commuter shoes. Comfortable for walking. I sometimes walk my daughter to school a half a mile away and then jump on my bike to got go work. You will get many compliments on how nice they look. I'm a size 10 regular shoe size and these fit like a glove. Foot does not slide around at all.

Great shoes

These are excellent shoes. Perfect for commuting. Got them on sale for $67.48. Tremendous value.

that is a good price. Darn.

1) love the look of the white, but live in NYC and worried it'll turn sooty in no cleanable are they?

2) Saw someone say that shimano m520 and the like don't fit...does anyone know if they also preclude pedals like A530 and the like (clipless with platform on the reverse side)?

Best Answer

John, I have PD-M324 and also PD-A520 pedals on 2 different bikes and they both work with these shoes without issue so far. I've only had the shoes for a couple weeks.

3 things to like here:
1. Laces allow for form-fitted comfort.
2. Design is simple, no-nonsense.
3. High sole construction and pads around the cleat make walking a pleasure.

I have egg beater pedals. Will these shoes work with them ?

Hi there,

Yes you can use Crank Brothers' cleats on these shoes. If you would like to order a pair, feel free to contact me at Have a great evening!

Great Shoe

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Have had these shoes for five months and they are still in great shape. They fit so well I seldom think about my feet. Will buy another pair for sure.

These shoes are FANTASTIC!

I bought these to replace some 25-year old Sidi touring shoes, which were manufactured before locking cleats on pedals existed, but which were intended for use simply to fit into toe clips on the pedals. I liked the Sidi shoes which were lightweight with a super-hard sole and had shoe laces (before velcro snaps on shoes were invented).

These Giro Republic shoes are effectively a perfect replacement. Although they're designed to attach cleats to the bottom, they don't need to have them. So they can still be inserted into my existing pedals with existing toe clips on them.

Furthermore, there are rubberized pads screwed onto the bottom of the hard plastic sole, which make walking around on floors or carpet or concrete very very comfortable and easy. The extra height added by these pads does not interfere with the shoe's ability to be inserted into the toe clips on the pedal (they just need to be loosened a bit), so this is really perfect.

Most amazingly, the shoes are super comfortable and supportive. And the super-hard sole and overall shoe construction seems to undeniably deliver more power and more efficiently, from leg to the pedal. I'm quite surprised at the increase in speed resulting from finally changing shoes from the old worn out Sidi's to these new Giro Republic's.

All in all... FABULOUS! Highly recommended.

But they run small in their sizing, so don't believe the US/European conversion chart. I originally ordered 43 but it was too small. The replacement 43.5 was somehow EVEN SMALLER than the 43 (obviously a manufacturing mistake, but identically small on a second 43.5 replacement). I finally ordered a 44, which is perfect (for a 9 1/2 - 10 US men's size) even though it claims to be for a slightly larger foot.

Great for riding, great for walking, great fit (finally, at 44), super comfortable, work great with toe clips on the pedals and no cleats on the shoes.

    Highly recommended.

Forgot to mention that the somewhat too small 43 and the just right 44 were in lead/gum color. It was the white shoes which I tried in 43.5 (because there was no stock in 43.5 for the lead/gum) which were incredibly much smaller than marked.

Perhaps a bad batch of white shoes, where could have actually been 42 or 42.5 but definitely not 43.5.

However the lead/gum 43 and 44 seemed accurate, though they ran small so that the expected correct 43 was actually too small for my 9 1/2 US men's foot while the supposedly too large 44 was actually just right.

Fortunately there was no problem at all doing the multiple RMA exchanges, until I finally got the right shoes (in the original lead/gum color I wanted) that fit perfectly.

    Great vendor.

I agree with "Dar", I ordered a pair of size 44 based on his review and I wear a typical US 9.5 as well, glad I went with the size 44 because there is no way they would have fit with the recommended size 42.5. ALSO***** beware that if you use the Shimano SPD M520-M530 pedals, or anything similar, these shoes will not work with them. The pads in the front are too thick and will not allow the two bolt cleat to engage the pedal. I had to remove the front pads of my shoes for the engagement to work and of course that pretty much defeats the purpose of the shoe. Looks like eggbeaters are the best way to go here.

@smo4009146 couldn't you just theoretically shave off some of the extra pads on the front of the shoe to get enough clearance for the pedals to engage with the pd-m530's? I wonder if they'd still offer enough comfort to walk in and bike in after...
