Item # GIR00AH

A no-brainer.

Your weekend plans might include pedaling through long, winding climbs, snaking along exposed ridgelines, and flying down wild, challenging descents. If they do, ride with Giro's Montaro MIPS Helmet to protect your control center without weighing yourself down. Designed for long days spent on the trails, the Montaro is constructed with a durable In-Mold polycarbonate shell surrounding an impact-absorbing EPS foam body. MIPS, or Multi Directional Impact Protection System, is added to the innermost layer of the helmet in the form of a thin lining that rotates slightly upon impact to absorb the brain-damaging rotational energy created in certain crashes.

Beyond safety, Giro ensures the Montaro won't slow you down by designing it to integrate with your other riding gear, including a built-in camera mount with a breakaway design to protect you and your device in the event of a crash. Giro's P.O.V. Plus visor adjustment system allows you to reposition the visor to accommodate full goggles, and strap grippers on the back of the helmet help keep the goggles in place. To keep the helmet from feeling cumbersome on hot days and long climbs, Giro created space for 16 vents with internal channeling for efficient air flow. The Montaro is lined with hydrophilic, anti-microbial padding that absorbs sweat and, together with the Roc Loc fit system, provides a comfortable, secure fit.

Like a glove!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This helmet was a wonderful purchase! I'm very happy with every aspect, aesthetic, build quality, MIPS for extra noggin protection, venting and most of all the amazing comfort. This helmet goes away while riding. Some others have stated its on the heavy side... I literally don't even acknowledge its existence on my head. It cradles the lower back of my head perfectly. I understand all heads are shaped differently, but for me it's huge win!

This helmet kicks ass!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: L

I ended up taking a spill in my last one, and had no hesitation to come back to the exact same size and color. I absolutely love this helmet. Killer fit, ton's of ventilation, and awesome looks. Don't hesitate and pick one of these up.

Does the job

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This helmet is super awesome. Very cool and sleek look. I feel safe with the MIPS technology. The fit is a little tight though. I recommend this for anyone.

Given the goggle compatibility and the rear protection, would this helmet be a candidate for skiing or snow boarding? Yeah, I see the million vents, but curious to see if anyone has had the same thought. I usually wear a balaclava, special ops style, anyhow.

Hey Jon,

This helmet isn't certified for snowsports so I wouldn't really recommend it. I'll reach out and we can chat about what you're looking for in a helmet.

Super Solid

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Perfect fit. I take of the visor when I ride road and put it back on for mtb. The bolts that hold on the visor will come lose after awhile, so make sure to re-tighten them occasionally. One of mine fell out and Giro was quick to send me free replacement bolts.

A littler tighter fit with mips

A great helmet but with the Mips it fits a slightly narrower than there non Mips helmets.

Best in a long time

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've had the Montaro for pretty much the entire season and it's definitely the best helmet I've had in awhile. It fits well, the visor is very secure, and I never think about it while I'm riding. The only issue I've had is some wear on the fit pads.

Solid Features, Fit Off

I picked this up after I crashed my last helmet (a Giro Hex) and liked that it had additional MIPS feature to it. I've worn Giro for my last 4-5 helmets or so, but on mountain and road, but was surprised to find that this helmet squeezed my temples in just the right spot so that i couldnt wear it for more than 1 minute. Slightly surprising considering how well i've fit into other Giro helmets.

I wear a MEDium HEX. Thinkin' bout getting the Montaro non-mips. Should I get a small? Bro. Thanks.

    Falling apart

I bought this helmet a few months ago and the inner liner is pealing apart and now the side screw to the visor is stripped out. I have only used it about 10 times and this is what's happening. I wouldn't recommend it to fits good but the helmet is falling apart on me

Thanks for the review Justin! Super helpful to get this feedback out to the community. Reach out if you have not warrantied it yet.

Pads not good, fit is hit and miss

i've worn this helmet a few times and the padding is already coming apart. It is similar to a previous review on here where the padding is shown to be splitting, not sure what is up with this. I've had the giro feature before this and there was no problems.

Also, the mips on this helmet is mounted with a couple fasteners under the padding right where the temples are, leading to bad headaches mid ride. It could just be my head shape but this helmet isnt for me.

        Great helmet

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I just got my new helmet. It has been a long time coming but I am stoked on this new lid. It is incredibly breathable and it is super comfortable. I will try to update the review once I put it through the ringer.

        Wife's helmet

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I got this helmet for my wife. Both of us are new to mountainbiking and she hates helmets with a passion (why? don't ask me! They look stupid she said, prior to owning this one)
She is wearing a helmet. Thank you Jesus! Apparently this helmet is fine to wear. It was a battle but we did decide to order a helmet and she happily wears this one, without feeling stupid. She says it has nice circulation, it fits like a glove and makes her feel safe. She loves the helmet. Can not confirm any of the other complaints at this point. So far the helmet is definitely a great purchase!

        Hip-Hip Hooray

        • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

This is a great helmet that provides full coverage, great ventilation all while maintaining a streamlined design that is lightweight.

        bells and whistles

Love all the features about this helmet. the visor easily comes up and down if you want to wear goggles. and the fine tune adjustment is secure and snug. breathes well on the ups and doesnt just pour sweat down over the face.

          major failure with padding

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
          • Fit: True to size

Ok, I'm now on my second warranty replacement helmet, and again the padding inside has began to come apart after only the first ride. Sure it does a great job of soaking up sweat, however it seems to swell to a point that it falls apart. I do like the helmet and will try 1 more time before switching brands. Hope it is just a bad product run but definitely unacceptable, maybe third time will be a charm.

          Well-designed helmet

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

In my opinion, it's the best bang for your buck in high end helmets. I've been riding in Alabama where the heat and humidity really put the ventilation to the test and it has far exceeded my expectations. I would generally take my old Giro Hex off 2 or 3 times per ride just to dump some heat and wipe the sweat, but I haven't even thought about taking this thing off on the three rides I've worn it. Gaps in the foam between the vents on the interior of the helmet seem to keep the air flowing and the absorbent forehead pad keeps the sweat off my glasses.
My only nitpick is more of a production flaw than a design issue. The right-hand side visor mount is angled a little bit higher than the one on the left-hand side, so that when both sides are in their lowest setting, the visor looks a little wonky. It will level out if you take the left side up a notch, but for the money it would be nice to keep the visor low without looking like I went otb at some point during the ride. Not a huge deal, but at some point I'll probably try to Dremel out another hole to make it level out.

          Well-designed helmet
