Guaranteed Phinney style, but the speed is up to you.

You've heard the phrase, "Everything old is new again"? Well, with the advent of custom townie bikes, wool kits, and the proliferation of tweed rides, this trend is holding its own in the world of cycling. The young American prodigy, and quite the fashion plate, Mr. Phinney, asked Giro to design a lace-up cycling shoe specifically for the 2012 London Games. And while we are sure part of it was a fashion statement, you can be sure that the Giro Empire ACC is worthy of a young man of Taylor's pedigree.

Starting at the uppers, they were wrapped with one piece of Evofiber microfiber. This fabric is exceptionally lightweight and highly breathable, featuring perforations for added cooling. This contributes not only to the sleek, wind-cheating profile, but it also reduces weight. And while the shoes might not appear to be very supportive, the opposite is actually true. Because of the flexibility of the microfiber, as well as the classic lace system, the shoes are able to be tied so that they fit your feet like a second skin. Adding to this is the ultralight and ultra-stiff Easton EC90 ACC Carbon Sole. One of the stiffest soles in the industry, it features a low 6.5mm stack height that mates with the uppers for unrivaled power transfer. The lower the stack height, the closer the cleats, and thereby your feet, are to the pedals. This minimizes power loss that occurs with thicker cleat plates.

The footbed provided is an adjustable SuperNatural Fit Kit. It allows you to fine-tune support to where your feet need it the most. Additionally, it was constructed with X-Static Antimicrobial fiber to keep odors and bacteria at bay.

The Giro Empire ACC Shoes are available in whole and half sizes from 39.0 to 46.5 and in whole sizes 47.0 to 50.0. They come in four colors: White/black, Matte Black/highlight yellow, Matte Black/florescent orange, and Matte Black/black.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

when i first opened the box to these, i was already in shock, they came in a shoe bag! i was very impressed wit the packing, and the over all quality to these shoes. they're slick for sure and will ensure you look fly out there on the road, and also be seen out on the road when that sun goes down with the reflective surface.

they are a bit narrow and do run a tad small, so i sized up to have a good fit. i normally wear a 46, so i got the 46.5 and they're perfect.

the Easton carbon soul is so sift and just solid! so so happy with these shoes and would recommend them to anyone!

Comfortable but too small

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 44.5

I was impressed by the cushioning inside this shoe (something you didn’t find often in cycling shoes) and how they hugged my feet Unfortunately, they run quite small. I’m between a 10.5/11 so I ordered a 44.5 but my toes touched the end of the shoe. I’ll be exchanging them for a half size larger.

Shining Bastard

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

1-quite stiff sole,

2-good support,

3-excellent looking,

4-lace is good but not so convenient as BOA,

5-easily peels off.

6-half size down comparing to SIDI

Most comfortable road shoes I owned.

  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 42

Got the blue to match my bike color and my club kit! have to go 1/2 size bigger.

Most comfortable road shoes I owned.

Size and color

Really nice shoe. I got the grey shoes. What to note... 1. They do run smaller. I’m a US10 consistently, my size would have been 44 however I got the 44.5 as I’d heard they run smaller by half a size. Unfortunately the 44.5 was too snug returned for a 45. 2. As for the color, the images make it look like a suede type material, this is not what they are. They feel more like a plastic and the reflective material make them almost sparkle? The heal is silver not grey. In all they still look good but not as good as they do in the pics.

    Great shoes

    Excellent fit and feel

The best cycling shoes I’ve ever worn. The laces hold my feet perfectly. The soles are very stiff but very comfortable inside. Light, great looking and customizable. I have skinny and flat feet so the highest arch supports works for me. I would and will buy again when I wear this pair out.

      These Things are Incredible

      Review from a client Daniel:
I'll tell you these things are incredible. The stiffness and thinness of the sole is something I haven't experienced before, in fact compared to my prior Specialized shoes I actually had to lower my seat post to compensate for how thin the sole is, I definitely feel more connected to the driveline. The lace enclosures really make the fit great as well.

Any thoughts on ladies using the men's version? Considering a pair for my wife - she uses Giro mountain bike shoes (women's) - assume get her the same size in men's?

This would be a great shoe to consider. You will just want to go down one size.

      Great fit! Great look!

The shoe fits great. I had a pair of Pearl Izumi P.r.o leader 2's that were eaten by a friends dog. In hindsight I am happy that the dog was shoe hungry. These are much more comfortable for my foot and it offers a great look with all the power transfer that a guy like me can muster. If you need a new shoe give these a try, you wont regret it.

Stiff sole, great support, good looking.

As of writing this review I have 482.1 miles on these shoes, riding 3 different bikes (a gravel bike and two road bikes), in dry and warm weather and cold and soaking wet rain. They are very tightly constructed as was evidenced by the water I poured out of them following one particularly wet ride. I like the latitude in fit afforded by the lacing system. The sole is perfectly stiff and gives excellent support on my SPD-SL pedals. And, they look good. They do run a little narrow and for that reason I ordered one size up from my usual. Overall I think this shoe pretty much nails it, only wish there was a little more room for wide feet.

What is your normal US shoe size? I'm an 11.5 US and was thinking I need the 46.

(Geoff M.) My everyday shoes are 11.5 US, my running shoes (Hokas) are 12 US, so somewhere in between there. Incidentally, I've found these shoes to be tolerably warm when combined with an over-bootie, wool socks, and a chemical toe-warmer in temps down to the mid 20s F.

      My first cycling shoes

After 3 rides I found the perfect fit, the laces are amazing, allowing you to adjust the shoe to your foot shape.

These shoes are narrow so I recommend to order half or one size larger, I'm 43 in normal shoes and I ordered a 43,5 that fit perfectly.

      Going on my second them!

These have been my favorite cycling shoes I've ever owned. I recently purchased the MTB version for Cross season. I agree with others to go half a size up. My first pair were slightly too small even though I purchased the same size as I've used in other Giro shoes. The laces are really nice to have for smaller fine tuning adjustments. The shoes seem to hold up and are easy to keep clean (I use the mostly black version).

As a few others have stated, it's best to buy half a size to a whole size larger. I wear 44 bontragers and went to a 44.5 on this. The shoes look and feel great, and I've gotten a lot of compliments on it as I was warming up for a race (on the plus side, it makes it easy for friends and family to spot me in the peloton).

      This shoe works!

Giro Empire ACC Reflective! I can now ride for hours without foot pain. Size up a half to a full size though. Look elsewhere if you have extra wide feet. Laces are trouble free. Arch inserts are a nice touch. These shoes fixed my feet problems. After placing my order, I realized I had a pair of Giro LX that were too small, so I replied to the "received my order" email and they changed my order to a larger size in the middle of the night! They never sleep! Great customer service!

      Long live the Empire!

Man, I love these things. I've been riding them for the better part of a year now and they're still going strong. The laces seem to offer a really dialed-in fit. Nice and lightweight, too.

Shoes that fit like a glove

These shoes are excellent. The laces not only look great, but it grasp your foot from all angles. You can't go wrong with these shoes.

      The Empire of Giro

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

This is my fourth pair of Giro shoes over the years (road and mountain) and I am extremely happy with them. I owned a pair of the Giro Factor shoes when Giro first introduced their shoe line, and although I have had a few other brands since then, I was excited to get on the Lace Up bandwagon, and return to Giro. The Empire shoe is built upon a slightly narrower last than the Factor of old, but that hasn't been an issue and I am happy with the new fit. I find these to offer a little more toe box and forefoot space than my Specialized S Works shoes, and run a little narrower than a Shimano shoe, but nowhere near as narrow as a standard Sidi. When I wear Sidi, I have to wear a Mega, but my feet are not necessarily wide. The lace up closure provides a very even, snug feel and the Easton carbon sole is plenty stiff. These aren't the super light SLX, but I really wanted the Blue Steel colorway. #Zoolander

      I wear a US 9 and bought these in a 43

Thanks for your review Forrest! You went with a 43 as a 9? I'm typically a 9 as well, and I currently own a 42.0 Factor ACC. However, the 42.0 is definitely on the snugger side (WAY too tight with thicker wool/thermal socks), and I want to pick up an Empire soon. I was planning on just getting a 42.5 but I don't know if a 43.0 will be too big? Curious of your thoughts and experience.

I always wear a size 9, I have attempted to size down to an 8.5 before but it never felt right. I tired on the 42.5, but my big toe felt a little too cramped. 43 was just right, a touch more space in the toes, but no heel lift, so everything worked out nicely. But I know for a fact I could not wear a 42, and could only do a 42.5 for short periods. If you can fit a 42 and just need a little more space for a wool sock, then the 42.5 is not a bad idea. Although our feet may be similar sizes, I am sure they are shaped differently.

      Good shoe

      • Size Bought: 40

I didn't follow the sizing chart exactly. I went a half size up and they fit great. I am still getting used to how tight to get the laces. The only challenging part with the laces is that you can't make adjustments while riding. Once you have it dialed in, you are good to go.
