A nod to the past, a glimpse of the future.
Taking design cues from the golden era of cycling, the Giro Men's Empire ACC HV+ Shoe forgoes messy dials and cluttered straps for the clean aesthetic and seven-point adjustability of a traditional lace-up design. However, just because it's inspired by an era where wool jerseys and lace-up kicks were all the rage doesn't mean it's lacking on new-school tech. One glimpse at its Evofiber upper, Easton EC90 ACC carbon sole, and SuperNatural fit footbed is all that's needed to be persuaded that the Empire ACC HV+ is one of the most technically advanced shoes on the market.
This particular version of the Empire ACC HV+ features a high-volume last that tightly hugs wider feet, but without the pinching or pressure points you'd normally experience with normal cycling footwear. It's available in both full and half sizes, so you can achieve the glove-like fit desired for besting PRs on the road and dethroning the competition at your local crit series.
Designed to hug your foot like a glove without deforming over time, the Evofiber upper is comprised of a breathable microfiber material with perforations that exhaust built-up heat in warmer conditions. This supportive upper is bolstered by the seven-point lacing system, complete with metal eyelets up top that prevent excess stretching where additional pressure is exerted by the laces. The laces are crafted from an anti-stretch material, so you won't have to constantly replace them after racking up countless miles on the road. Furthermore, there's a lacing garage that you can tuck the laces into, so they don't become snagged in your drivetrain while you're pedaling at a brisk cadence.
Besides the supportive, foot-wrapping upper, the Empire ACC HV+ Shoe emphasizes comfort with its SuperNatural Fit footbeds, which employ three different arch inserts for customizable support underfoot. Each arch insert remains in place with a secure hook-and-loop fastener, so you won't have to worry about it shifting around while pedaling. And because cycling footwear tends to turn into a stinky mess after racking up hundreds of miles, the footbeds employ X-Static silver fibers that naturally prevent the built-up of smelly microbes, even when you're sweating profusely on the road.
Seamlessly transmitting every watt of available power into forward locomotion, the Easton EC90 ACC carbon fiber sole is both stunning stiff and extremely lightweight. Besides being stiff enough for competitive racing purposes and discerning cyclists alike, this carbon sole features a 6.5-millimeter stack height that's low-slung for optimized power transfer to the pedals. The carbon sole has a small opening along the toe for greater ventilation in warm weather, as well as a replaceable heel pad for added confidence when you're shuffling into the cafe or dismounting on the road to take in the scenery.
