Description

G-Shield Bib Tight

Riding in cold weather is hard enough, adding road spray or precipitation to the mix doesn't help matters at all. In fact, a cold, wet chamois is way worse than pedaling indoors so if you want to enjoy riding outside in fickle weather, we'd suggest investing in the G-Shield Bib Tight from Giordana. Keep the engine warm and dry so you can ride your best and enjoy impressive breathability so you don't overheat when the tempo picks up or the clouds break.

What separates the G-Shield collection from other brands is its ability to maintain its water-resistance and wind protection while maintaining a high level of breathability. Shoulder season rides certainly come to mind when still hitting up intervals and hill repeats in the fall for 'cross season, or some tempo is in order for some early spring road events. And since it's designed with a minimum number of panels, that means fewer seams for more comfort and fewer entry points for water.

The secret to the G-Shield label lies in its DWR treatment, known as Acqua Zero Eco, causing water to bead up and roll off rather than wetting out the fabric so the thermal material can insulate with dry warmth instead of a wet chill. The Acqua Zero Eco doesn't impede the material's breathability, so internal sweat vapor produced while working out can escape instead of causing clamminess.

Giordana didn't overlook the bib area and this tight gets its lie-flat Low Pro 0 straps, aiding in comfort with its soft material and not interfering with layers. Chamois duties also get the royal treatment with the G-Shield getting the Cirro S chamois, the same version featured on its top-end AV Tights. Giordana minimizes the feel of the insert, striking a race-appropriate amount of cushion without eliminating its plush, long-ride comfort. It also gets its Copa Mondiale technology, a male-specific recessed area on the top of the chamois made to improve ride quality and add all-encompassing support to an area crucial to long-term comfort.

Initial impressions:
When I first felt these bibs, I was surprised at how durable they felt. You can tell as soon as you pick them up that they’re going to protect you during some nasty weather if needed. They are also fleece lined on the inside, so you can bet that they’ll keep you warm during those chillier rides. The material is high quality as is the DWR (Aqua Vento) treatment that the garment received from Giordana. The chamois is their Cirro S chamois that is becoming known as one of the most comfortable on the market. I like the fact that they have the same comfortable chamois in their winter gear, so if you like their summer bibs, you’ll like these bib tights as well. These also have a reflective cuff at the base of the tights which is made of a little bit sterner, but still stretchy material so that they can provide a little more coverage and also some reflectivity during low light or nasty conditions.

I originally debated whether to get a Medium or a large on this piece, but ultimately went with a Large as I have longer legs. My legs are also a little larger because of weight training before I got into cycling. I’m glad that I went with Large. They ended up being just the right length for me, and the legs were only just a little bit tight. This is why I suggest that if you have a more muscular build, or if you’re in between sizes, go with the larger size for these.

First rides:
My first ride with these pants, I completely misjudged how warm they really would be. I was used to wearing some removable legs with summer bibs to get me down to 45 degree weather, so when I woke up for my morning ride, and it was in the 50s, I thought these bibs would work perfectly. Turns out they are made for much colder weather than that. I wore this with the G-shield Jersey and quickly found that they add about 15-20 degrees of heat to my riding. I tend to run hot on my rides so I ended up overheating on the climb that I was doing that day as the temperatures got into the mid 60s during the ride. Lesson learned. These are warm bibs.

My second ride was a few days later during a cold snap here in Utah. The ride started in the high 40s and throughout the ride temperatures ranged down into the 20s. During that whole time, I was noticing the cold, but I never felt like the cold became unbearable or that these bib tights weren’t enough to keep me warm and going on my ride. I will say that at 25 degrees F riding is not particularly comfortable in these, but it’s doable. I would rate these to about 30-35 degrees before you really start getting uncomfortable. Another way of looking at it is that they will add about 15-20 degrees of heat to your riding.

On both rides I realized very quickly how comfortably these ride. I loved the chamois, which is made to wear without any kind of chamois cream and is infused with Aloe Vera. The bibs didn’t rub or chafe anywhere during the 100 or so miles that I did on them within the first week of having them.

Overall, these bib tights are very comfortable, perform well in colder conditions and will do well against wind and everything but a constant torrential downpour. Giordana has done really well with these. That being said, if you’re looking for more of a classic feeling thermal, you might go with the FR-C pro Bib tights by Giordana. If you’re looking for the warmest bib, you could do the AV Extreme by Giordana. This bib falls right in between those two as the middleweight bib for staying warm as well as relatively dry (this one will keep you the most dry of their lineup).

These work just fine

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

  • Size Bought: XL

I wore these on a windy (15mph with gusts into high 20s) and temps in the mid 30s. The tights did very well keeping the wind out and the legs at a comfortable temperature. I have not used them in the rain, but there was a fair amount of water in the road from a day of rain yesterday and I did not feel any of that getting through. I ordered XL and they were nice and snug without being too restrictive. I also appreciated that the back and shoulder straps were snug but not too tight, which made the bib tights all the more comfortable.
