FR-C Pro Lyte Bib Short

As the long winter starts to wind down with hints of spring on the horizon, it has us dreaming of long summer rides. It usually coincides with the start of the spring classics. Watching the hard men race across ancient roads in all kinds of weather is usually pretty good motivation for us to get on the bike and do a little suffering ourselves. That way when the fast group rides and racing begin in earnest, we'll have a little fitness and aren't simply ticket collectors arrière du peloton. It's only a matter of time before we trade out the embrocation for sunscreen and call up the usual crew that's always down to take on an all-day summer road epic. For those rides, during our hottest and longest efforts, having gear designed specifically for the conditions is imperative for staying cool and comfortable. And for those days, the men's FR-C Pro Lyte Bib Short from Giordana paired with the matching Pro Lyte jersey will be the kit we choose.

These bibs are constructed of lightweight, perforated material that's specifically designed to enhance breathability on hot and humid days. It offers compression to help support muscles against energy-sapping oscillations while riding over rough roads and encourages quicker recovery so you don't deplete your matchbook too quickly. The perforations extend up to the bib uppers and straps, providing you with the support you need for a long day in the saddle without adding bulk or restricting any of your movements. A departure from the perforations is in the saddle area where it features anti-abrasion fabric for increased durability. Beneath that layer you'll find Giordana's excellent Cirro S chamois with its four-layer construction and recessed front area sculpted for the male anatomy, known as Copa Mondial, reducing pressure and bulk. Giordana infuses the microfiber with Aloe Vera helping to keep you cooler and improve hygiene while reducing odors. When you realize that you took the last sip from your bottle, you'll be glad the bibs have subtle dimpling, providing an aero boost, so you'll get to the gas station that much quicker. Further down at the leg openings, a smooth-finished, gripper-free hem comfortably holds the cuffs on the legs preventing you from having to tug them into place during the ride and preventing Neapolitan ice cream tan lines.

  • Compressive materials support muscles
  • Cirro S chamois keeps you comfortable on long days

Favorite Bib

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These are easily my favorite warm weather bib. The perforated fabric helps keep me cool both in the dry Utah summers and the muggy Florida weather. The length is a little longer than others but fits me great and provides a nice amount of compression.
The straps are also perforated and wide enough to rest comfortably on your shoulders without cutting in or rolling up.
Sizing is a lot more realistic than other Italian made cycling apparel and I have not seen any issues in workmanship.

favorite bibs

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I am updating my earlier review. I gave the bibs two stars because the stitching on one pair started to come undone fairly early. I had my wife fix the stitching, I only wash the bibs on delicate, and still wear them regularly. I actually wear the pair that initially frayed the most. The other pair has held up well too. If you can find these on sale, I say get them.

I own two pairs (navy and gray), and I absolutely love these bibs. I wear a size medium (I am 5'10 and, currently, 145 pounds, but that will likely change depending on how many packs of sour patch kids I eat). The bibs fit really well, and, to be perfectly honest, are the best fitting bibs I have ever owned. I use them for everything from double metrics in the mountains to a short club ride. They are great. It pains me to write a negative review.

Unfortunately, there is one serious problem: the stitching seems to come out. I can't say how many times that I've worn the pair with the stitching fail, but I would say at least 10 times (but likely less than 15 times). The stitching came out at pretty much the exact spot pictured below. As frustrating as that is, I still have to give them a great review because they were the greatest pair of bibs that I ever owned (I bought the second pair just before the fraying occurred, but don't regret the choice). I just noticed that I have an older pair of unrelated Giordana bibs that also have slightly frayed stitching on the chamois, so perhaps it's an issue with the company itself. But, to be fair, this pair is several years old, and I just now noticed it. At approximately $200, it's reasonable to expect shorts to last more than a summer--and, unfortunately, I'm not sure that these will.

For what it is worth, I would add this: I wore these during a downpour. I have a bad habit of always pulling my shorts down when I ride. I did this while they were soaked; the leg gripper on the right side was never the same. As long as you don't pull on your shorts in downpours, this would not be an issue to you.

If you buy these shorts, I highly recommend only using delicate on the washing machine or washing them by hand. I do love these bibs, and they are worthy of lots of praise...or at least they would be if they were able to last more than a few months.

Poor quality, fell apart after one ride

Had the same problem with 2 pairs of FRC pro. Hoped the lyte would be different. Stitching coming out of the chamois after easy 40 mile ride. I've been riding and racing for almost 30 years. These are the most expensive bibs I've ever worn and the worst quality. Love the fit, material, and, chamois. Wish they were well constructed. Competitive rep suggested that I was wearing too small size, but I am following the size guide and the first pair to fall apart was a large. Getting a refund ; looking for a quality replacement.

Poor quality, fell apart after one ride

I'm with you on this: "These are the most expensive bibs I've ever worn and the worst quality. Love the fit, material, and, chamois." Was so happy thought my search for perfect bibs are finally over. But same as yours - my bibs fell apart after 2nd ride (stitching of chamois). Have worn many diff bibs (Dhb, Castelli, Endura, Isadore, Nalini) but never had such issue.
Great service from CC with replacement.

Kudos Giordana

I was very critical of the discontinued Giordana Sahara bibs and the replacement, the ProLyte bibs, fixed all the shortcomings and more.

The Pro Lyte bibs are cool and wick well without being almost see through like the Sahara. The Pro Lytes are more comfortable, shocking considering the Sahara bibs were very comfortable already.

Giordana's best bibs ever, and that is saying a lot since Giordana bibs are already at the top.

These bib shorts are amazing...I have several Giordana bibs and these I must say are the most comfortable. I remained very comfortable at the end after a long ride (80K). Bravo!

So the title is legit, I'm not just saying that. It was hot here a couple days ago and I had a crit race. Needed a light kit and this is what I chose. Couldn't be happier with the form and function of these bibs.

The inseam is a bit longer and not my taste, but when you start cycling they fall on the leg in the perfect position and length. The perforated panel conform to your legs and compress to optimize blood flow.

The straps are nice too. I like the wider straps and they don't pull on you shoulders too tight. They are also perforated so they allow wind through.

And the Cirro S chamois is amazing, but that goes without saying. Giordana really kicks butt (not actually) with an awesome chamois. Great for short or super long rides or Grand Tours. As shown:

Best Bibs I've Ever Worn

Secondary review after many rides, still my favorite bibs and even better now that it is really hot in SLC. Great ventilation and compression. the only complaint is they are a little long for my 30" inseam and ripple a bit when my legs are straight on a descent.

You should buy these bibs!
