Muscle love.

We would never claim that a pair of cycling shorts could actually make you a better cyclist — there’s some marketing mumbo jumbo going on there that we’d like to stay away from. We will say, however, that a short like the Giordana FormaRed Carbon certainly can’t hurt. The FormaRed is the very top of the stellar Giordana clothing line — and this one gets the works. From its near-medical quality compression fabric to its women-specific Cirro chamois, which is, frankly, one of the best on the planet, you can’t go wrong with the FormaRed short. Unless, of course, you wanted a short that would make you slower.

The star of the shorts' construction is the HC-50 compressive Lycra on front and side panels, which replaces the previous model's HC-44 with an increased thread count — from 44 to 50 threads per centimeter squared — and a corresponding uptick in compression. With the added compression, these shorts are approaching medical grade, so they're more than capable of keeping your blood flowing and reducing the fatigue caused by road vibrations and muscle oscillation over long days in the saddle.

The inner thighs and seat panel feature Zaffiro 2.0. It still features the same abrasion-resistant durability as the original Zaffiro, but with an increased resistance to pedaling friction. As brand namesake Giordana herself cheerfully explains of HC-50 and Zaffiro 2.0, "Both are like their predecessors but better!"

The shorts' body is kept in place by the decidedly unusual 190 E leg bands down low. The 190 E bands spread a soft, non-restrictive, and gently compressive grip across the 7.5 centimeter-wide cuffs. A silicone application is used throughout these bands to help keep everything in place.

Inside the FormaRed Carbon Bib Short, you'll find Giordana's top-of-the-line, women's specific Cirro chamois. This seamless, single-piece insert has foam padding of varying thicknesses and densities to ensure comfort while minimizing bulk. It's elastic, so it moves and stretches with you as you ride, and then returns to its original shape when you're done. The outer layer of the pad uses a special Nylon microfiber that incorporates aloe vera for its protective and hygienic properties. This aloe vera treatment is permanent.

After trying several well reviewed brands, I tried these and will ONLY use this chamois from here on out! I was stopping my rides short at 40 miles before, and now I can go all day. The compression isn't too tight and the waist/hip band is comfy. They wash beautifully, and I also have the kit, and knickers kit.

just OK

chamois fit is personal - so, although Giordanas are my favorite shorts, the older version was better for me. I started feeling some pressure around the front groin area, for whatever reason. I am keeping one, having used it multiple times for 30+ mile rides but returning the other since I don't absolutely love them. the feel of the fabric is great- compressive and not skin tight. the leg openings aren't as grippy feeling as the older version but for some reason the leg hems DON'T ride up. I wish they worked.

Thanks for the reviews! Super helpful to get this feedback out to the community.

Just-right protective and look good!

I just bought the FormaRed Carbon size L w/ the white stripe. I'm 5'6", with a 140lb-ish middle-aged body. I love these shorts--fit and looks. I took a 35 mile ride the day after I got them. The chamois got along well with my soft bits and protected my sitz bone nicely--better than all my other riding shorts.

These are an updated version of the FormaReds I bought summer of 2014. I love those too, but the stylish red waistband liner has come unglued. I've contacted the BackCountry warrenty dept. and I'm hoping Giordana has a fix. Thankfully, the 2016 pair don't have a waistband liner.

One thing--when standing/walking in the shorts, the chamois feels a bit wide--I can feel it pressing on my inner thighs. It is indeed notably wider than the chamois on my 2014 pair. However, when riding, that wideness wraps over the saddle--gives better protection between the saddle and ischium, and it feels normal--"diaperness" disappears. I suspect as the shorts break in, I wont feel the wideness when walking. I do highly recommend these shorts, especially if you can get them on sale. Of course, good fit varies from body to body--fortunately, the Competitive Cyclist return policy lets us try things out.

Unanswered Question

what is the inseam on a large versus extra large Giordano formared carbon shorts? I just returned a pair that were very short. Can you recommend any Giordano's that have a longer inseam? I am 5'9 and very long legged. Thanks

I bought the Laser shorts and the fabric was see through. Are these the same way?

Good shorts

My question about sizing went unanswered so I stuck with my gut and got the L. They fit perfectly, no bunching in the crotch, the right length, not TOO compressive. I rode 45 miles and then went bike shoe shopping after my ride, the shorts were comfortable the entire time. I will be ordering another pair while they are on sale.

Unanswered Question

I wear a medium in the Silverline series. due to the more compressive nature of this short, would i size up to L? Also is the inseam the same for all sizes....8.5?

What is the inseam length in an xl?

Hey robp825093,

The inseam for size XL is 8.5".

Feel free to contact me with any questions or to place an order. I would be happy to provide you with a personalized experience here at Backcounty!
