Set goals and get active.

Although Garmin has been on board the activity tracking trends for some time now, the Vivosmart HR Activity Tracker marks a new venture for the company with its newly developed Elevate optical sensor to constantly track heart rate unobtrusively at the wrist. As with its standard sibling, the Vivosmart, the Vivosmart HR packs a heap of functionality to keep track of your daily incidental activity and includes built-in vibrating reminders to get up and be active when you've been sitting too long. Everything from steps to stairs to total minutes of activity can be carefully tracked and evaluated using this handy little piece of technology.

Wrapped in a sleek yet unassuming strap with a clean, intuitive touchscreen, the big news about the Vivosmart HR is its ability to continuously monitor heart rate through its proprietary Elevate optical sensor at the wrist, eliminating the need for a bulky, uncomfortable chest strap. The continuous data stream allows the watch not only to provide feedback on current heart rate, but also to accurately assess your resting heart rate in addition to all its other activity tracking features. This can help indicate fitness and health changes over time and is a huge perk for athletes looking to catch early signs of overtraining. While Garmin claims Elevate is appropriate for tracking intense activities and training zones, it may be a good idea to stick to your traditional chest strap for interval sessions until Elevate's accuracy is proven, given the issues with many of the other optical sensors currently on the market.

For daily tracking, the Vivosmart HR has a plethora of options for collecting data. It tracks steps, stair flights ascended, active minutes, sedentary minutes, calories burned, distance walked, sleep, and of course heart rate and resting heart rate. It uses the CDC guidelines for 150 minutes of physical activity per week as a benchmark and calculates your progress towards that goal as the week progresses, as well as progress towards step count goals which are calculated based on your day-to-day activity patterns.

To meet the demand to stay connected, Garmin builds in smartwatch notifications. The Vivosmart HR pairs with your smartphone to receive notifications to keep you in the loop out on the walking path. You can't read full messages on the watch face, but it gives you enough to screen and decide whether or not you need to pull out your phone. The Vivosmart HR also syncs with Garmin Connect to provide graphs and additional analysis of your daily activities.
