The well-examined life.
Garmin's vívosmart Bundle includes Garmin's own heart rate monitor for guaranteed compatibility with the vívosmart wearable. The vívosmart automatically recognizes the heart rate monitor, so there's no danger of picking up someone else's signal during Pilates or — even worse — broadcasting your red-lining heart rate during a race. By monitoring your heart rate, you're one step closer to achieving a critical mass of body metrics to help you live a well-examined life.
The vívosmart included is the same metric-gathering device sold separately, monitoring distance traveled, steps taken, and calories burned. It also includes the Auto Goal feature to chart your present levels of fitness and introduce new goals and milestones as you develop. These goals, as well as the other metrics it records, are automatically saved to your Garmin Connect profile, an online community for training, social competition, and general fitness tracking. With the addition of the included heart rate monitor, the vívosmart also keeps you apprised of your heart rate throughout a given activity or day's events. It uses the heart rate information to refine your goals and milestones and to calculate metrics like calories burned more accurately.
Our favorite feature is the inactivity alert that vibrates to let you know when your present activity level is approaching sedentary. After one hour of down time, you'll be alerted to get up and get going. Garmin sites research that indicates if you interrupt periods of inactivity with short intervals of something as simple as walking for a few minutes, your body stays in the biological equivalent of your stereo's standby status. It will continue to produce fat-burning enzymes, even while you're sitting at a desk or in front of the TV.
With today's proliferation of smart phones and tablets, the OLED face's touch and swipe operation is a common enough interface to be considered intuitive. Its smart notification feature nudges you with a gentle vibration when those other devices receive a text, email, or call. It also has a "find my phone" feature, which we definitely appreciate.
The vívosmart also preforms the more pedestrian duties of a watch, including displaying the time and programmable alarms. It's time-telling lets it monitor your sleep, too, tracking and juxtaposing periods of nocturnal movement and restful sleep, which in turn helps you track your recovery. Its 5 ATM water rating means you can wear it 24/7, unless your showers typically exceed 50 meters of water pressure. The heart rate monitor unit clips on and off of its fastening strap, so the strap can be washed as often as needed.

Nice fitness band
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
This is a pretty nice daily tracking/fitness watch. The screen stays off until you tap on it, so it's pretty subtle and keeps the battery life going for days. The bluetooth pairs and syncs well with my iPhone and Garmin's app. The app is really straightforward to use and has relatively decent features. You'll get more specific features out of other more sport-specific apps, but the Garmin app does a good job of covering the basics. Setting up alerts from your smartphone is easy and works well, but I quickly discovered that there is such a thing as being "too connected" - after my wrist buzzed with the 30th email of the day I was ready to fling the watch across the office... or just turn the vibrating alerts off... The nice bit is that you can set up the watch to not buzz you every time an alert comes in without turning off alerts altogether - you can still scroll through your alert center on your watch without getting a vibrate alert each time something new comes in.

What a great little watch! Tons of cool options, the bluetooth works great. Its very light, almost not noticeable when on.
