Pedal power.

The Garmin Vector 2 Power Meter Pedals build on their older sibling, the Vector Pedals, to bring you powerful tracking capability in an easy to set up format that you can cycle between your different machines. With the Vector 2, Garmin got rid of the old washers found on the Vector pedal pods and opted for a system that clamps over the pedal spindle. The Vector 2s also feature a new pedal pod flashing LED system to let you know when the unit is paired, notify of pairing issues, and determine if the battery is low.

The Vector 2 still measures power with pods at both pedal spindles where power transfers from the pedal into the crank arm. The sensors monitor tiny changes in the pedal spindle curve as force is applied to the pedals and transfers the data via ANT+ technology to the head unit. With data from both pedals, the Vector 2s can provide data on left/right balance as well as dynamics that include where you generate power in each pedal stroke, where force is applied on the pedal, and how much time you spend in and out of the saddle while riding. This allows you to fine tune your pedal stroke and address any imbalances for a potentially smoother, more powerful ride.

The big difference between this pedal-mounted system and crankset-mounted power meters is ease of installation and the ability to quickly transfer it between bicycles. While crankset systems often require extensive set-up and some time away with the shop mechanics, this pedal system can be installed in a few minutes and is easily swapped over to another road bike, just like moving non-power meter pedals. Now you can get data on all your bikes with just one power meter system.

The pedal itself comprises a lightweight composite body with a stainless steel wear plate to extend the life of the pedals and provide a wide platform for the cleat to reduce the potential for uncomfortable pressure points. The adjustable tension binding also lets riders customize how hard or easy it is to twist the cleat out of the pedal and is compatible with Garmin Vector and Look Keo three-bolt cleats.

The whole system runs on a standard 2032 coin cell battery in the pedal pod for a claimed 175 hours of ride time per battery, which is easily replaceable with a quick trip to your local grocery store and a twist of the battery cap. The pedal pods fit crank arms 12mm to 15mm thick and up to 44mm wide or 15mm to 18mm thick and up to 44mm wide. Garmin Vector cleats with six degrees of knee-saving float are also included.
