Carbon G. Hurricane Shoe

Hit up the cross-country trails, gravel roads, or 'cross course with efficiency and good looks while donning the Carbon G. Hurricane Shoe from Gaerne. It’s a lightweight shoe packed with tons of features and experience from the Italian brand. Founded in 1962 by Ernesto Gazzola, Gaerne still builds its shoes in the old world way using the skills and traditions of expert craftsmen while utilizing modern materials. Its shoes are renowned for their durability, high quality, and technical innovations which have made it a favorite among mountain bikers. The Carbon G. Hurricane is Gaerne's mid-level mountain bike offering, yet it benefits from the same features and details as its top-tier versions. It uses a single BOA L6 dial taking up the shoe's slack with stainless steel cables for quick and easy micro-adjustments on the bike and an excellent track record for durability.

For breathability on sweltering summer trails, the upper is crafted of a soft microfiber with laser-drillings and mesh inserts. It's all-new injection molded anti-slip heel-cup anchors your heel in place during out of the saddle pedaling efforts and finishing line sprints and will not deform or weaken over time. It claims that this anti-tendonitis form allows for the best foot stability and control. For the footbed, Gaerne uses its lightweight Transpirant Insole which offers great comfort and is replaceable. Like the upper, the insole is perforated for maximum breathability.

For the sole, the Carbon G. Hurricane uses its EPS Light Carbon Fiber MTB Sole which achieves an impressive 10.0 out of 12.0 (its highest for an MTB shoe) on its stiffness scale. It's light and thin, so your foot sits close to the pedal spindle for maximum pedaling efficiency. And for extra traction when scrambling up hike-a-bike sections, it reached out to Michelin for a rubber compound designed to balance grip and durability. The large areas between the lugs allow for better self-cleaning and mud shedding. For even more grip, there's the ability to screw in two toe spikes for more purchase in tricky terrain.

Finally Garne in the USA! (at least one)

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

If you like Italian fit, high quality build and a stiff sole these are a great option. I started wearing Garne 20 + years ago and have gotten great wear out of them. This new pair immediately felt comfortable and familiar, the biggest difference was with the carbon soles which are considerably stiffer than any previous models I?ve had. These are not really a narrow width shoe but maybe a little less than a medium. I bought them big enough to wear something other than thin bike socks and I can still get them snug enough with the boa system w/o having tight spots. The boa system has worked fine thru these first 13-15 rides I?ve done in them. This is the first Garne shoe I?ve had that is a one piece upper, most have had additional protection- whether leather or plastic- I gave 4 stars because of my skepticism about the durability, I will update my review after I ride them a while longer. The soles traction feels similar to my last pair, when I walk the back of the SPD cleat does hit ground. They aren?t for walking tho?- they are are rigid. They fit with XTR platforms very well. There?s not much venting compared to my last pair which had a lot of mesh mid-foot, toe and on the tongue, just perforations in those same areas. So far the end of summer rides haven?t felt too hot on the feet. I?m riding a Trek Procaliber 9.9 and I?m concerned about performance and weight, these are light but not really pure race shoes. Overall I?m encouraged by how well they fit right away and how good my feet feel in them. I realize that fit is personal but if you like an Italian style fit (I have Sidi road shoes) these are really worth investigating. 3/26/21 Update Still happy with these. Rode a ton in them, they still look good and no appreciable wear. Boa was a little sticky after some mud rides just needed a trip to the sink. They aren?t a particularly cool shoe but doable in the mid-west.
