Carbon G. Chrono Shoe

Gaerne might not be the first name that comes to mind when seeking out some high-end cycling shoes, but it should. Founded in Italy in 1962 by Ernesto Gazzola, Gaerne still builds shoes in the old world way using the skills and traditions of expert craftsmen and are constructed using modern materials. Its renowned durability, high quality, and technical innovation have made it a favorite among the fastest riders in the peloton and if you're looking for a footwear upgrade, check out its Carbon G. Chrono Shoe.

Gaerne sweats the smallest details in its shoe design, knowing that any slight, initial discomfort is magnified 5 hours into a ride. For the closure, it uses a pair of BOA L6 dials for durability and the comfort of zero pressure points. The micro-adjustable BOA reels and stainless steel cables offer a more uniform closure and greater air circulation at the front of the foot.

Speaking of breathability, the upper is crafted of a soft microfiber with laser-drillings. The anatomical tongue is also perforated giving the shoe excellent ventilation on summer rides. To ensure efficient pedaling, Gaerne uses its Tarsal Support System ensuring the ideal position of the foot inside the shoe, for a rounder and more powerful pedal stroke. It's all-new integrated anti-slip heel-cup anchors the heel in place and will not deform or weaken over time. It claims that this anti-tendonitis form allows for the best foot stability and control. For the footbed, Gaerne uses an anatomic EPS Comfort Insole with tarsal area support for greater comfort and pedaling efficiency. Like the upper, the insole is perforated for maximum breathability.

Down below, the G. Chrono uses its Lightweight EPS Full Carbon Sole that achieves a 12.0 (its highest) on the stiffness scale. Both ultra-light and thin, your foot sits close to the pedal spindle and the carbon fiber weave is optimized to transmit every watt of power into the pedals. It's also designed to improve foot stability thanks to its shape in the plantar arch area. Four air vents improve airflow and improve breathability inside the shoe. And to keep you from sliding on slippery café floors, the sole has an anti-slip insert at the toe and a replaceable heel pad. Compared to its previous soles, the cleat position options have been increased by 9mm and an alignment scale printed on the sole allows you to set up the exact position of the cleat.

What do you think about this product?

How does the fit compare to other Italian brands like Sidi? Specifically, the toebox width, forefoot width and volume?

I wear a size 43.5 in a Sidi. What size would you recommend in the Gaerne Carbon G Chrono?

Love the looks of this shoe. It seems everything the Italians make is beautifully stylish. The Boa system works great - I can get these pretty tight and still not really feel them on my feet; I usually need to adjust once or twice early in a ride, but that's easy. The sole is super stiff. The size chart is accurate. Caveat: I have only ridden these shoes inside. I have no idea how easy they are to keep looking fresh.

Everyone knows white = speed when it comes to road cycling shoes. The Gaerne Carbon G Chrono shoe is no different. While aesthetics are a small (okay big) part of road cycling, for me, if it doesn't perform, I don't want it. On a scale of 1-12, Gaerne ranks these shoes a 12 in terms of stiffness on the sole. This equates to incredible power transfer while remaining comfortable hour after hour on the bike. Color and stiffness play a big part in my shoe selection but I think most important is the fit and how dialed I can get the shoe. These bad boys are next level when it comes to dialing in the fit to the contour of my feet. The boa system evenly distributes pressure keeping hot spots away. What you get is a precise fitting shoe that is easily tuned. Ready for the sprint? Crank that boa system down. Feeling like your feet are hot and swelling? Ease up the tension. The micro adjustment of the boa system puts ratchet systems in the past and velcro in the history archives. Combined with the stiff sole, these shoes are a complete success for me. The Gaerne Carbon G Chrono shoe breathes well and dirt and smudges rub off leaving the pristine white look for miles to come. The fit (toe box included) is true to size and isn't narrow but isn't wide. The boa system ties the shoe together, figuratively and literally. A 2-hour ride can have 10,000 revolutions of the pedals, it's a no brainer that a top-level road shoe is a ticket to better performance, comfort and efficiency. So what are you waiting for? Give the Gaerne Carbon G Chrono shoe a try! I'm glad I did.
