There's something to be said for the feeling of freedom that overcomes us atop our trusty steed, pointing down a dirt road that leads to destinations unknown. It kindles a fire inside of us that reminds us of the time when land wasn't owned, when diving into the wild took you to untouched destinations of pure adventure. Exploring might not take us to never-before-seen locations anymore, but that doesn't mean we don't still hold a flame to the sentiment, and FSA's new Energy Modular BB386EVO Adventure Crankset is happy to be mounted up on your bike to explore what new lands you can find. With its use of BB386EVO you'll find straighter, stronger crank arms that commit power to your pedal stroke, so you can go further, and hollow core technology offers the right amount of light weight and affordability to conquer what lies ahead of you down the gravel roads and windswept desert highways.
FSA introduces its newest crankset design with the Energy line, finding the right balance between the elite level SL-K, and more affordable Gossamer, utilizing technology from each to achieve a crankset that finds the happy place between price and weight. It comes equipped with a 46/30t configuration that provides maximum versatility on off-pavement riding. We think this gearing makes for an ideal range when it comes to bike packing and gravel grinding, as it offers a bit more relief for those long and tedious fire roads that lead to scenic mountaintops, and offers your quads a break when you're diving nose-first into fierce headwinds in the great plains.
The Energy Modular Adventure crankset takes queues here and there from both the SL-K Adventure and the Gossamer. Like the SL-K, it uses an integrated outer chainring, and a 90mm BCD inner chainring that affixes to the crank with 4 chromoly steel bolts to ensure total stiffness, but like the Gossamer, the Energy crankset skips out on carbon fiber, aiming to please a more pocket-friendly price point, while capitalizing on hollow-core stiffness and just enough vibration damping to keep your muscles from aching after miles of pedaling on gravel road. As you'll find with other FSA cranksets, the Energy Modular Adventure crankset uses chainring bolts with a star-shaped Torx bit. This wrench style is ideal for reducing the chances of stripping bolts, as well as creating a secure fit that allows for proper torqueing. A tight fit and snug fasteners means less power-robbing flex and decreased chance for strange creaking noises to develop, so you'll spend more time enjoying the soft hum of a well-tuned drivetrain and the ambient sounds of the path you roll through.
As with most of FSA's cranksets, the SL-K Adventure crankset is built to the 386EVO standard, whose modularity makes it every frame's best friend. It's got the dimensions to clear even massive BBright shells, but FSA manufactures a range of adapters to mate it to any common bottom bracket shell.
