Dialed for all-mountain domination.

We had a difficult time believing FOX could made the 36 Float any better, considering it's the premiere fork for all-mountain riding and enduro racing. However, after seeing the integration of EVOL technology into its Float air spring, we realized the excellent 36 Float just became all the more sensitive to small bumps on climbs and blistering descents. EVOL technology is borrowed from FOX rear shocks, increasing negative air spring volume for a ridiculously supple feel when you're tracking over sections of trail littered with small rocks and bumpy roots.

Stout 36-millimeter stanchions work to deflect torsional forces from bucking you silly when you're smashing across rock gardens, opting for bonus hits alongside the trail, and sending cliff drops into steep landings. These stanchions employ FOX's Kashima coating for lower levels of friction, meaning you'll feel its buttery-smooth travel eagerly soaking up every bump. Not only is the Kashima coating a welcome addition for its increased sensitivity, but it also makes the fork's stanchions more durable when you're thrashing your 36 Float on a regular basis.

This particular 36 Float gives discerning riders greater adjustability with the Fit damper providing independent control over the high and low-speed compression. This option is welcome if you're the type of rider dialing in every last detail of your fork's operation, especially if you find stock settings (i.e. Open, Medium, Firm) to be insufficient for your riding style. It comes with a BOOST thru-axle for added front wheel stiffness when you're dropping into technical lines.

Real Smooth

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Just built up a new bike with this fork, my bike last year had the 2017 version of this fork. Only big difference being the new EVOL air spring, which Fox's marketing department tells me improves small bump performance. Actually... my gosh I think it might. This thing feels very smooth and supple, while running similar pressure I ran in my previous fork. So that's neat, I'd actually say it's one of the more noticeable improves in the Fox Float line recently.

If you aren't familiar with this fork in general, it's pretty wild. Mega burly and stiff. If you aren't going to be riding very rough terrain and pushing your fork, I would strongly recommend saving weight with either a Pike or Fox 34 option. That said, if you want the beefiest and best tracking single crown fork out there, look no further. The compression controls, as with most these days, are effective but not mind blowing. They work as advertised, but only make minute adjustments really so it is essential to dial in your volume spacers first to get the most out of this fork (as with any fork these days).

Only reason for 4 stars not 5 is because the cost is a bit extreme. No surprises there and no major price hikes compared to previous versions, but I still think it loses a star because of the significant financial sacrifice one must make to upgrade to this beast. Like most bike parts... totally worth it if it's in your budget, but if it's not in your budget just go with something else that is because at the end of the day riding any bike is lots of fun :)

If you do go for this fork, make sure you put the time in you set it up correctly or have someone do it for you. If you just pump it up and go you might get lucky and love it, but you might hate it all summer and wonder why your hands hurt and you have no traction.
