Ride hard and look good doing it.

When it comes to quality off-road apparel, the folks at Fox Racing are leading the way. At Fox, the recipe tends to be equal parts innovation and style, so almost everything that it makes feels good on a bike and looks fresh at the pub post-ride. Take the Ranger Shorts, for example. Stretch fabric and a removable chamois liner keep you cool, dry, and free to move around for hours in the saddle. When the ride is over, the simple, timeless solid color and stylish longer cut take over. If you're going to be out on the town, just ditch the liner and head out.

Don't let the subtle styling fool you — the Ranger shorts are well-equipped. A quick-dry polyester construction ensures cool and dry comfort, even on all-day epics. Meanwhile, two-way stretch eliminates binding for an unlimited range of motion. The removable liner makes the Ranger as comfortable as spandex tights, but a little more public-friendly. The other real benefit of the removable liner is that you're able to use it with your other shorts or with softshell baggie pants for winter riding. In a way, that makes the Ranger one of the most versatile shorts on the market.

Lightweight but Run Small

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large

nice basic short, fabric is lightweight and they aren't too baggy. They run smaller than other fox shorts I've had and also smaller than Zoic shorts. I'm a 36" waist and the L was pretty snug. I'd also love to see at least of the pocket have zipper closures.

Solid short...not a fan of the chamois.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 34

The shorts are excellent, lightweight and durable...make great walking shorts pre and post ride and they look good. The chamois is no where near as good as the one in the Fox Livewire shorts I own. This one is wider and feels like a diaper. Will probably just ditch the pad for another brand. Still, a great deal on Backcountry and will last a long time.

Great brand, lacking quality.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Fits slightly slim.

These shorts ripped within the first 30 minutes of use. May have been user error, but MTB shorts should be constructed with durability in mind. Padded shorts that come with are good addition to my padded shorts collection.

Nice Lightweight short

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 32

Shorts fit well and pretty true to the size. The material is fairly lightweight which makes them good for hot days. They are a little shorter than other MTB shorts which exposes your leg a little more to branches but the trade off is they are cooler on a hot day.

2 parts to these short.. good and bad!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

The good or great part is the shorts. They fit well and Velcro adjustment around the waist it key to fine tune the fit. The clearance on these are just right. Easy to get behind the saddle and very comfortable material.

The bad part is the chamois. They are one of the worst chamois I've owned. That being said though, I didn't buy it for the chamois and the shorts are well worth the price. I'm amazed at the range of comments about the chamois here, as it ranges from excellent to worst ever... so 5 stars for short and 1 for chamois.

Great short

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Close fitting, but loose enough for proper flexibility. Used primarily for biking and hiking. The included chamois is nice, but can get hot in the summer. Less one star due to lack of zippered pockets.

Just OK

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 36

I am a road biker starting to mountain bike. I have several road kits of different brands. The liner in these are by far the most uncomfortable chamois that I have ever worn. The shorts are nice however and look good as casual shorts to wear at any time so I kept them.

Ranger In The Woods

  • Fit: True to size

I have put about 30 miles on these shorts now and I'm really enjoying them. The comfort is next level and the materiel looks and feels great. I'm not really a chamois person so I have not used the chamois that comes with them. However if it functions anything like these shorts I'm sure it will be great. Great minimalist light weight short.

However would like a zipper pocket or closure.

Fox Racing Ranger shorts

Love these shorts,my go to shorts. The shorter inseam leave plenty of room for my knee guards. Soft durable fabric that doesn't pinch anywhere. No zipper, only reason not a 5 star review.

runs small, otherwise great shorts

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

These run small. I agree with the other reviewer that they're tight in the quads.

I love fox's internal chamois.

This is an interesting model. The "fly" isn't really a fly. it's just a webbed section with no zipper. It works though.

Good shorts, but TOO bright

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 32

Didn't like the color on these. Much brighter than in the photo. Looking for something less attention grabbing.

Just missed the 5 star

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 34

I bought these for my husband and he loves them. They lost one of the snap buttons, which was a bit of bummer (and the reason for 4 out of 5 stars) otherwise they've been great.

Great shorts

  • Fit: True to size

I really like these shorts. The shorter inseam was a main reason I ordered the Fox Ranger. I suppose the shorts fit true to size, but with a 33 waist, the 34s would've fallen down if they weren't attached to the liner. For my liking, a Velcro cinch strap might have helped. I find the attached liner to be comfortable and appropriate for MTB use. Great shorts for the price.

Great shorts for the price

These are now my go-to mountain bike shorts. Comfortable, light, and rugged; they're the perfect mix.

The waistbelt is soft/comfortable and has velcro adjustment straps; I'm a 32 waist and have mine maxed out. The front buttons don't create any pressure points and I love the lack of a fly. Make the shorts super comfortable when you're in the saddle.

I really like the material, it's soft but durable. Not super stretchy however, but I'm okay with that. I've taken some hard, abrasive, spills and as of now there are no holes/tears.

The length is a little short which I like more for cross-country-esque riding; but hasn't been an issue with knee-pads while riding lifts.

Styling is great and I've worn these around town or at a bar before/after the bar. Really like how they look.

Only downside is that one of the buttons popped off, good thing there are two!

Tight in the quads

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Size Bought: 36

I needed a reasonably priced pair of cross country mountain bike shorts (and these come with a chamois) so I went ahead with them. I ordered 36's and while the waist was a little big the tougher part is the quads of the shorts are tight for me. Overall they are a good value but if you are the type of guy that has big legs you may want to look elsewhere.

Pro form Chamois does the job.

These shorts are a little shorter in length than other mtn. biking shorts which is why I chose them.

Very breathable but without zipper pockets these can't be 5 stars.
