"After me comes the flood"... or sometimes before.

While we can't condone setting out to ride when the trails are wet, since it contributes to their damage and erosion, we certainly understand that sometimes you get caught out there, or sometimes you simply have no choice from A to B. For those wet rides, we heartily recommend the Fox Downpour Jacket.

The Downpour is constructed with dual-layered Ultra Q4 polyester that's been treated with a proprietary "10K/10K" laminate for waterproofing without impeding breathability. Ultra Q4 is incredibly light yet incredibly tough, and like we said, it breathes really well, so you're not going to feel like you're wearing a garbage bag, even after getting your heart rate up — an attribute aided by the laser-cut vent perforations and underarm zippered vents, too. All seams and zippers are fully sealed from the weather, and the fitted hood folds into the collar when you don't need it. The jacket is both safe and practical, too, hosting a number of reflective details along with being a highly visible color for nighttime riding, and the hand pockets include a headphone port to keep the all-important tunes pumping.

The Fox Downpour Jacket comes in the color Acid Green and in four sizes from Small to X-Large.

Ultimate outer shell!

  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

So many features to love about this jacket to go crush it in the foul weather. The Downpour definitely has some nicer qualities and features than the Downpour LT Jacket making the extra few bucks well worth it. I like how the hood attaches to the bottom of the collar and stays back behind the jacket, making it feel like you don’t have a hood (you can tell in the product photo). If you aren’t going to use the hood, you can roll it up under a flap that velcro's down, really practical! The jacket is completely waterproof and windproof with the Ultra Q4 laminate, but has side vents that zip wide open without webbing in between your under layer. The jacket has lots of small design details and reflective accents to make you visible at night. The elbows have some added abrasion resistant material to protect from a spill. The size medium fit me perfectly at 5’10” 157lbs. Although it is categorized as a regular fit, it is pretty slim and fitted. The collar is double layered and zips up snug and comfortably. There is room for a base layer and thin soft-shell without being too tight and keeping its lightweight and flexible feel. You may want to size up if you plan on using this as a winter piece. It’s plenty packable for a long and questionable adventure. The length of the jacket in the back is a couple inches longer in the back without having it feel like a flappy dress. The slim fit and adjustability features of the jacket will protect you in the worst conditions. From the competing mountain biker to the casual commuter, this is a fantastic option.

How heavy is this fabric? Would this work as an all weather winter commuter jacket?

This is a rain shell so you'll probably want something warmer underneath if you use it in the winter. Its a faboulus piece for cool rainy areas such as Seattle or Vancouver.

Nice jacket, but....

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

This is a nice jacket. Fits well, and seems to breathe decently for what it is. However, on the first day I used it the velcro tab on the sleeve delaminated. Basically, Fox bonds a rubber pull tab to the velcro closure -- the rubber peeled off the velcro and is now flapping around. I'm going to contact backcountry and fox and see what they want to do about it.

Nice jacket, but....

Update -- customer service at BC was great. They emailed me a return label and as soon as my return got scanned by UPS, I had a replacement on the way.

Its raining in the northwest right now, so I'll give the jacket a full test this weekend.

Thanks again for the excellent customer service!
