CURA Disc Brake

Great brakes simply allow you to go faster. Seems counterintuitive at first, but the Italian braking maestros at Formula have found the perfect formula of power and modulation with its CURA Disc Brake so you're on them less and when you are scrubbing speed, you're in complete control. With a revised lever geometry, axial master cylinder, and thoughtful ergonomics, the Cura provides the confidence you need to go faster and push limits. And at 359g for the system, good luck finding a brake packing DH and enduro power at this weight.

The Cura represents the brand's latest generation of disc brakes, helping them further distance themselves from their peers with its release. Already proven in World Cup downhills and EWS races, we're certain this brake will put Formula on more rider's radars. Formula doesn't build budget brakes nor does it provide a ton of OEM brakes that have to hit a certain price point to get spec'd on bikes. That explains why you don't see too many in the wild, however, with the Cura, Formula is able to refine it's construction processes to build a brake that’s highly competitive with the other players.

The fact that you don't see too many out there is a shame because these brakes perform. It features large 24mm pistons to move the organic compound pads against the rotors helping in the modulation and power department. Now is an important time to mention that Formula uses forged construction versus the more common and cheaper cast construction. While more complicated and costly, forging yields stronger, lighter, and more consistent pieces for a more reliable setup that's earned the brand a cult following.

Then there are the looks. Formula always gets top marks in our books and it sweats every detail, from the glossy black or polished finish at the levers and calipers right down to the stainless steel hardware. Small details show its racing heritage, like the split-perch clamps allowing you to remove the levers without having to touch the grips or other controls. The flip-flop design of the levers allows for you to run them on either side of the bars if you're from the UK or fancy moto-style placement. And, it's also designed a Mixmaster clamp (sold separately) allowing you to unite SRAM or Shimano shifters into one tidy (and lightweight) package. Perhaps one of the coolest features is the Speed Lock technology letting you connect and disconnect the hose at the caliper several times without loss of fluid or air introduction into the brake. This makes building up a bike with internally routed hoses much easier.

As you can see, Formula's Cura disc brake represents one of the highest performing disc brakes on the market. The price reflects the lever, hose, and caliper for a single wheel. Rotors and appropriate adapters are sold separately. This is also Formula's first brake that utilizes mineral oil instead of DOT fluid for the hydraulics. Formula reps told us that it always wanted to use the more environmentally-friendly mineral oil, but it never found a fluid that matched its strict performance requirements, until now.
