R5 Artica Cycling Shoe

For the worst winter conditions, many would opt for the indoor trainer rather than risking damp feet or cold toes midway through some deep winter base miles. Fortunately, Fizik makes a shoe that keeps your feet warm and dry even when snow is prevalent and the roads are particularly wet. The R5 Artica Cycling Shoe offers substantial protection from the elements without compromising anything you'd get from a performance-oriented road shoe.

The Artica R5 is fully waterproof, using a membrane that blocks out water while maintaining breathability for more intense training sessions. The Microtex-reinforced uppers provide support, with a fleece-lined interior to keep your feet cozy and warm when the temperatures drop. The shoes use an internal speed-lacing system to quickly dial-in the fit, with a waterproof outer zipper to keep out precipitation and road spray. Lastly, a carbon composite outsole ensures efficient power transfer while keeping the overall weight of the shoe down.

Look cool, that’s about it.

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Got these 50% off..now I know why - these are Easily the most uncomfortable shoes/cleats I’ve ever worn. I returned them as I’d rather ride barefoot in the snow than lace these up again.

worst idea for winter ever.

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

ZERO breathability. You are basically waiting for the shoe to be saturated with sweat and freeze yourself, which takes about an hour. I bought these because i thought there is no ventailation on the sole and i hoped these winter dedicated shoe can be smart in design and make sole thicker to prevent heat lose. But it's as thin as regular shoes, so there is still high heat transfer from bottom. I don't feel any difference than if you wear regular cycling shoes with shoe cover and tape the vent. I don't recommend these unless your feel don't sweat at all

Busted Zipper

I had them for a little less than a month and struggled with the zipper every time I put them on. If you stop zipping at the front curve of your foot and just use the Velcro strap to close then you're okay. I had them fully zipped and the zipper ripped open at that spot (see picture) during a ride. I returned them. Other than being unwearable, they seem great for cold weather riding with a pair of winter socks.

Haven't tested the warmth yet. Runs big.

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

Haven't tested the warmth yet. Runs big. I ordered the recommended size via the size chart and it was way too big. I reordered a half size down and that was too big. May try a third time. Was really excited to get on with the shoe since the reviews for warmth were so good. I usually wear a size 10 in US men's. That equals 43.5 on the size chart. This shoe was a 43 and still too big. I may go down to 42.5. Not giving it a low rating until I know how it performs. Three stars for now.

Warm as promised

Used them for a couple rides in the 20-30F range, and they do a far better job at keeping feet warm that toe/shoe covers ever did. Wind chill is our biggest enemy in New England, and the shoe did an excellent job at dampening it. The shoe is designed with extra room in the toe box, probably enough to stuff a foot warmer for colder temps. The heel feels a touch on the narrower size (but this is from someone with a wider foot). It would have been great if the tightening mechanism involved a boa dial rather than a drawstring. While the current system works decently in practice, the drawstring and plastic clamp don't inspire long-term confidence, and make any quick adjustments impossible after the shoe has been zipped up. While you don't get the same degree of freedom as in a regular cycling shoe, the Articas don't feel like wearing Moon Boots on a bicycle. Comfort and fit has been excellent, and I get to feel my toes at the end of a ride. After swapping a couple pairs looking for the right size, I settled on EU 44.5. My regular shoes are 11 1/2 or rarely 12. In the warm months I ride a pair of S-Works 7 in 45.5 (regular width). Prior to that I wore S-Works 6 Wide in 46, and some Shimano road shoes also in a 46. Bottom line: unlike other brands whose shoe sizes have zero link to reality, Fiziks' seem accurate. Don't shake the 8-ball to guess what size to order. Stick with the European size that most closely matches your US size on their chart. HTH!

Not That Warm; Not Waterproof At All

Familiarity:

I've had three rides with the temperatures down to the mid 30s, and they were warm enough, but really not any warmer than my regular shoes with a hefty winter cover. I rode them today in moderate rain, and they were completely sopped by 7 miles. I finished the ride at 3 miles later, and the water just poured out of the boots. I did have my tights over the boots. I suspect that the water came in through the zipper.
