Aliante R1 Saddle

If you're in the hunt for a new saddle type, then we can't recommend a better starting place for any rider and any application than the Fizik Aliante R1 Saddle with Carbon Braided Rails. It's been the sweetspot for so many cyclists from all rides of life that it may be both the beginning and the end of your quest for comfort. Plus, the incorporation of carbon fiber throughout its construction means that you can rest assured that it's as lightweight and durable as possible without making any concessions in comfort.

The saddle's body sees a return of the TwinFlex foundation, which uses a stiff outline for support, with a more forgiving interior to provide cushion for your perineum. The R1's TwinFlex body is made from carbon-injected nylon to save weight compared to the R3, which uses glass fibers instead of carbon. In Fizik's Linnaean estimation of cyclists-as-animals, the Aliante is for bulls. Bulls are less flexible and rotate their pelvises forward when they ride, an adjustment that requires a saddle with a larger, deeper pocket — but, truth be told, we know many cyclists who can touch their foreheads to their knees while stretching but still prefer the Aliante.

The R1 also saves weight by using braided carbon fiber instead of Kium for the rails. The braiding provides a new level of strength against both the clamping force of your seatpost and the load the saddle bears when you take a load off. We've all had it happen to ourselves or a friend: halfway through a ride, you notice your posture has taken on a strange, tilted bounce owing to a broken rail. Not only is this embarrassing, but — depending on the severity of the rail failure — you may have a long ride out of the saddle to the nearest shop. (You can thank us later for not contracting "rail failure" to "railure.") The whole thing is capped off with a black microtex cover for equal parts longevity and style.

Took some adjustment

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Saddle preferences are particular--everyone's butt is different. I was a happy and long time user of the Aliante Gamma, so I thought the Aliante R1 would be a light weight upgrade. For me, this saddle initially felt too hard and a little narrower. This seat made my sit bones numb. After reading a bunch of reviews online, I tweaked the angle of the seat and found a sweet spot that I liked. It's not as comfortable as the Gamma, but if you stick with it and find the right setting, you can be happy.
