Head out for a day-long excursion of sweeping singletrack and shaded switchbacks on the Ergon SMC4 Comp Gel Saddle. It features the same foam padding and extra gel inserts as its SMC4 Sport Gel sibling, but loses a bit of weight without sacrificing long mile comfort.

Ergon swaps out the CroMo rails found in the SMC4 Sport Gel for lighter TiNox rails and pairs them with a long-lasting nylon composite shell. It then adds Orthopedic Comfort Foam padding and the aforementioned gel pads, and wraps it all in a soft, durable, microfiber cover to withstand abuse from the elements. A pressure-relief channel traverses the center of the saddle to create a topography that protects sensitive areas while maintaining a supportive platform.

Works well.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I like this saddle I utilized the fit guide on Ergon's site and this was one of two recommendations. It's comfortable and the price point is really solid for the quality.

I have a Selle SMP saddle on another bike that is slightly better but close to 3x the cost.

Saddles are personal, make sure this fits for you. Use this guide:

Comfort Straight Out Of The Box

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

After measuring my sit bones, I picked one of these up about a month ago in size medium. Right away, I could tell it was a big step up in comfort from my stock WTB saddle (which was giving me saddle sores) and it didn't take long before I felt confident using it for big 7+ hour weekend rides. I have yet to have any comfort issues, but do wonder if it has a tad too much padding.

Very comfortable saddle

Over the years I have tried many saddles. Some are better than others, but I can't say that I have really liked any. It has been more a matter of which I can tolerate better. This saddle from Ergon is one of the best I have tried. I have been using it for a few weeks with very positive results. I am using this on a road bike and find that it works very well. It is a great shape and supportive, but with nice padding without being too cushy. Ergon makes great saddles that deserve to be much better known. They come in a variety of widths so it is important to match the size to your sit bones. Yes, saddles are very personal, but this one is definitely worth a try.

When I first put this saddle on I was very pleased with it. However, after a month or so it started to creak. It has gotten to the point where it sounds like a cheap motel mattress on every bump or pedal stroke. I've contacted CC about a warranty and had no luck. I ended up buying a Specialized Phenom from my local shop for a replacement. $100 not well spent.

Exactly what I've been searching for

I finally found my perfect saddle. Thank you Ergon for this new model. I tested 6 different saddles (including the SMC3) before finding this new SMC4 Comp Gel. Unfortunately my schedule only allows me to ride once a week or sometimes once every 2 weeks. So my sit bone region never toughens up. My rides are typically 15-20 miles of typical SoCal trail riding. This saddle is the perfect combination of comfort and performance at a good weight. It's cushy but not overly so. And I really appreciate the length of the saddle plus it's wider flat padded nose for steep/technical climbs. If you're looking for a more comfortable saddle you gotta give this one a try.

Thanks for the detailed review! Glad you found the perfect saddle.
